John Bartlett (1820–1905). Familiar Quotations, 10th ed. 1919.

4159 Thomas Gray 1716-1771 John Bartlett

NUMBER:4159
AUTHOR:Thomas Gray (1716–1771)
QUOTATION:To each his suff’rings; all are men,
  Condemn’d alike to groan,—
The tender for another’s pain,
  Th’ unfeeling for his own.
Yet ah! why should they know their fate,
Since sorrow never comes too late,
  And happiness too swiftly flies?
  Thought would destroy their paradise.
No more; where ignorance is bliss,
’T is folly to be wise. 1
ATTRIBUTION:On a Distant Prospect of Eton College. Stanza 10.

He that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.—Ecclesiastes i. 18. [back]
