James Wood, comp. Dictionary of Quotations. 1899.
Massinger
Black detraction will find faults where they are not.
Captivity, / That comes with honour, is true liberty.
Detraction’s a bold monster, and fears not / To wound the fame of princes, if it find / But any blemish in their lives to work on.
Great minds erect their never-failing trophies on the firm base of mercy.
Greatness, with private men / Esteem’d a blessing, is to me a curse; / And we, whom from our high births they conclude / The only free men, are the only slaves: / Happy the golden mean.
The over-curious are not over-wise.
True dignity is never gained by place, and never lost when honours are withdrawn.
