Ultima ThulePoems. Bayard Taylor
D
The peace of God was in his looks.
Watch o’er Maximilian’s tomb,
Watched him, silent as themselves.
Turn their storied pages o’er;
Songs of theirs, however sweet.
He is gone, who was its guest;
An inn, nor tarry until eve.
In what planet, in what star,
Shines the light upon thy face?
Rest thy weary feet to-night?
Was a garland on thy hearse;
In Deukalion’s life, thine own;
Blooms the perfect flower at last.
Rang for thee their loud farewells;
Lying dead beyond the sea;
The peace of God in all thy looks!
