William Stanley Braithwaite, ed. (1878–1962). Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1920.

Lines for the Hour

If what we fought for seems not worth the fighting,

And if to win seems in the end to fail,

Know that the vision lives beyond all blighting

And every struggle rends another veil.

The tired hack, the cynic politician,

Can dim but cannot make us lose the goal,

Time moves with measured step upon her mission,

Knowing the slow mutations of the soul.
