Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Ossian

Stands alone like a rock in a sandy vale.

Bends … like a wave near a rock.

Brightened, like the full moon of heaven; when the clouds vanish away, and leave her calm and broad in the midst of the sky.

Calm as the breast of a lake when the loud wind is laid.

Careless as the course of a meteor.

Contended, like gales of spring.

Eyes, like reflected moonbeams on a distant lake.

Fair he was, like the rainbow of heaven.

Hair like the mist of the hill, soft and curling in the day of the sun.

Heaved like ridgy waves.

Lovely as the first beam of the sun.

Mild, like the hour of the setting sun.

Mournful and low, like the song of the tomb.

Pleasant as the gale of spring, that sighs on the hunter’s ear.

Round as the shield of my fathers.

As rusheth a foamy stream from the dark shady steep of Cromla when thunder is rolling above, and dark brown night rests on the hill; so fierce, so vast, so terrible, rush forward, the sons of Erin.

He slowly moves, like a cloud of thunder, when the sultry plain of summer is silent and dark.

Terrible … like flames of death.

Vanished like a mist that melts on the sunny hill.

Voice was like hollow wind in a cave.
