Frank J. Wilstach, comp. A Dictionary of Similes. 1916.

Ambrose Philips

Bounds, light as hind before the hound.

Brightens all my sorrow,
Like gleams of sunshine in a low’ring sky.

Like frisking heifer, loose in flowery meads,
She gads where’er her roving fancy leads.

Gay as the primrose-dell in May.

Mild as the lamb.

Shine, like woodland flowers which paint the desert glades,
And waste their sweetness in unfrequented shades.

Shy as the fawn.

Lightly skimming….
Like winds which gently brush the plying grass.

Sweet as violet-borders growing over fountains over-flowing.

Like the tendrils of the vine,
Do her auburn tresses twine.

Unharmful as the dove.

Unkind as hail.
