The Great Gatsby and the American Dream

Throughout literature, colors are used to represent feelings, emotions and actions of characters. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the color green is used to represent the love story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. As he grew up and worked for his immense fortune, Gatsby transformed his life into one he felt would impress her the most. Fitzgerald uses the color green to represent Gatsby’s perfect image of Daisy, and the greed that engulfs the couple throughout the entire novel.

Colors can invoke feelings for people. Certain colors are attached to moods. Red can represent anger, green sometimes represents envy and blue can represent calm or even melancholy. Much art, music, and literature is dependent on color to convey the intended mood of the artist. From nearly all the colors on the rainbow to the color grey, there is a connection between these buried meanings behind all of the colors. Green is the most important color throughout the book because of special meanings and roles it plays on all of the characters. The color green relates to wealth and success on almost all of the characters. Gatsby is the one who brings this color to life and connects with it to show how it takes part in this story.

In The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald a multitude of colors represent symbols and characters throughout the novel. The color blue normally can represent a large range of emotions and feelings, such as depression, sadness, abuse, royalty, cold and calmness. Furthermore, blue relates to many objects in life, which includes water and the sky. However, Fitzgerald uses the motif blue to express the symbols of foreshadowing, Gatsby’s royalty, which is shown in his house and parties, and a representation of how Tom acts as a barrier in between Gatsby and Daisy.

When Gatsby looked across the bay that separated him and Daisy he called it a “Blue Lawn” which represents his loneliness and longing for Daisy. His thoughts of Daisy make him sad or lonely. He throws parties which in the movie there is a lot of blue in them. This is ironic because he is feeling lonely but there is a lot of people around him. He does not know most of the people at his parties, he just hopes that one day Daisy will show up to one of his big parties. There are many aspects that contribute to the american dream. The most recognizable are wealth and love, but ultimately, the american dream is having everything you could want and more. A lot of the time the american dream is associated with an underdog type of perspective, or a ‘rags-to-riches’ type story. This is to show that the dream can be achieved by anyone, even those starting out with little to nothing to their name. The idea of the american dream is explored in F. White as used in The Great Gatsby is a symbol for purity, innocence, and status. White is the color typically surrounding Daisy Buchanan. For instance, when Nick visits Daisy’s house he notes, “Their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay” (Fitzgerald 6). He uses a large array of colors such as green, to represent hope, gold , to represent wealth, and white to represent innocence and purity. These help push forward the importance of wealth, dreams, and to support the description of Gatsby’s dream girl Daisy.

Symbolism is a big part in how people express certain feelings or represent important items. The American Dream is a huge achievement that everyone wants to reach. Whether people want to admit it or not, it is a symbol all it’s self. It can be anything really, a great job, a family, white picket fence, even music or attending concerts of your favorite band. The American Dream is something that makes you so happy and what you can achieve or want achieve in your lifetime. The main AMerican Dream is money, a family, and happiness. In The Great Gatsby the american dream is a green light.There are several different colors for the different symbols in the book which are portrayed throughout the book often, and in the right context. Each character is put with that color and in different scenes for different reasons. Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and Nick Carraway all portrayed the same color symbol; yellow which stands for death and or/ corruption.

In the United States' Declaration of Independence, our founding fathers "…held certain truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." This sentiment can be considered the foundation of the American Dream, the dream that everyone has the ability to become what he or she desires to be. While many people work to attain their American dream, others believe that the dream is seemingly impossible to reach, like F. Scott Fitzgerald. Since its institution, the United States has been revered as the ultimate land of ceaseless opportunity. People all around the world immigrated to America to seek quick wealth, which was predominately seen in the new Modern era. Beginning in the late 1800's to the early 1900's, the period introduced progressive ideas into society and the arts. Accompanying these ideas was a loss of faith in the American Dream and the promise America once guaranteed, especially after World War I. One of the renowned writers, F. Scott Fitzgerald, emerged during this period and put together The Great Gatsby “embodying…the fluid polarities of American experience: success and failure, illusion and disillusion, dream and nightmare”,

In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, colors are one of the most important details in the book. Throughout the story Fitzgerald cleverly uses colors in order to focus on specific themes and characters. He wrote this book in a way where one can read it for pleasure, and where one could analyze it and truly appreciate the work that he has put into this book. Every color has a specific meaning which correlates with each of the characters. Specifically, gold represents wealth, high class, selfishness, and relationships; while white represents honesty, purity, innocence, and a symbol for surrendering.
