The novel follows the life of a dog named Buck as his world changes and in turn forces him to become an entirely new dog. Cruel circumstances require Buck to lose his carefree attitude and somewhat peaceful outlook on life. Love then enters his life and causes him to see life through new eyes. At the beginning, Buck is terrified of Spitz and strives to avoid him and do everything right. Soon, though, Buck longs to be the lead dog and goes out of his way to cause trouble for Spitz. This ultimately leads to a fight between the two, with Buck emerging as the new lead dog.
After a long, strenuous winter, a man, his wife and her brother buy the group of dogs. They are newcomers and have no idea how to properly run a sled. They get a late start, (almost spring), and run a very slovenly program. Buck encourages his team on, but the winter was just too hard on them. One by one they die, and Buck begins longing for death himself. When he could not move another step and was being beaten to death, John Thornton steps in and saves his life.
After all that he had been through, one would hardly suppose that Buck could love a person. However, love he can and love he does. He loves John almost more than is possible; once, as a joke, John commanded Buck to “Jump!” over a cliff. A second later, he was struggling with Buck at the very edge of the precipice. They could happily live together for the rest of their lives...if it weren’t for “the call”.
Once Buck becomes used to John and his way of living, he longs to be back in the wild where his ancestors roamed. He roams through the woods for hours on end, searching for where “the call” originates. On one of his
At the beginning, Buck has to hold his own because if he shows that he is weak he will die. Buck is learning about the “Law of Fang”. For example, Buck witnesses Curly’s death because of this law. Buck learns not to get into fights so he is not killed by the smarter dogs. Second, Buck wants to fight other dogs so he is not killed. For instance, Buck has to protect himself from Dolly, who has gone mad from rabies. Since Buck does not want to be killed and eventually work his way to lead dog, he runs away from Dolly. Last, Buck is being harassed by Spitz to see who will be “alpha” dog. For example, Buck is tempted by Spitz to fight but
The Call of the Wild, on the surface, is a story about Buck, a four- year old dog that is part Shepherd and part St. Bernard. More importantly, it is a naturalistic tale about the survival of the fittest in nature. Throughout the novel, Buck proves that he is fit and can endure the law of the club, the law of the fang, and the laws of nature.
The call of the wild is about a dog named buck hat goes through many owners and then goes to the wild and joins a wolf pack. The central idea in The Call of The Wild is the way you treat animals can tell about you and your personality.

He is disciplined by the Law of Club and Fang. The man in the red sweater takes Buck out of the cage and repeatedly beats him. Buck continues to try to attack until he is to week to fight. He then learns the law of Club and Fang.
Finally john Thornton stepped in and threatened the mans life if he laid another hand on the dog. He then took the dog from him; the rest of the team was drove on by the men just to fall threw a river and die. Buck was aloud to rest and gain his weight back. John Thornton became his best friend.

London’s novella Call of the Wild tells the story of Buck’s transformation from a domesticated pet on a vast Santa Clara Valley estate to the primal beast he becomes in the bitter regions of the Klondike wilderness. London delivers Buck’s journey in several key plot events and uses various settings and narration styles to tell the story in a way that allows a reader to easily become invested in Buck’s character and well-being from the viewpoint of a loyal and lovable pet, as well as, that of a creature returning to its primal roots and ancestry. Settings in Call of the Wild consist of generally harsh and vicious locations, situations previously unknown to Buck, and various hostile persons and dogs. As well as a variety of settings, London
Beaten, neglected, and loved Buck dealt with all those things. In the story ‘’ The Call of the Wild ‘’, the central theme is how one treats animals can reflect on what kind of person they are.
This year’s summer reading options were marvelous. It was a hard choice to choose what book to read, but in the end, I chose The Call of the Wild by Jack London. The Call of the Wild was an adventurous tale about a dog named Buck and his adventures as he was sold into a harsh life of relentless labor in the cold and brutal North. The author of this classic novel, Jack London, was a short-story writer and a prolific American novelist. He was born in San Francisco, California. He was known for his other novels, The Sea Wolf and White Fang. I chose this particular novel because I love reading classic novels and it seemed to be an interesting and exciting story. Finally, this was the novel of my choice because it was recommended to me by my grandma.
In this book Mercedes, Hal, and Charles, a group of very inexperienced and even less equipped city people, to depict the probability of doom to those who do not adapt. While in Skagway the three have no idea what the Klondike holds. The well dressed well fed team wants nothing but riches and fame. In their effort for time they purchase the now exhausted dog team, which Buck leads, to take them to find the gold.
While with John, Buck reveals his true character by saving John when he almost fell into a river. This showed respect for his leader, by it also shows how attached Buck could get to someone. Before this Buck was very close to Judge Miller, but never to the point where he would risk his own life for someone else’s. In addition Buck character changed while with John because before he was not willing to trust his new leaders. Until John came into his life, her he trusted him and was willing to do what he wanted. Finally Buck became very protective of John, all the way to the point where he would never let John out of his
Curly was the victim. They were camped near the log store, where she, made advances to a husky dog the size of a full-grown wolf, though not half so large as she. John Thornton was Buck’s final master, a gold hunter experienced in the ways of the Klondike. Thornton saves Buck from death at the hands of Hal, and Buck rewards Thornton with fierce loyalty. Thornton’s relationship to Buck is the ideal man-dog relationship: each guards the other’s back and is completely devoted to the other. The strength of their bond is enough to keep Buck from acting on the forces he feels are calling him into the wild. There was no warning, only a leap in like a flash, a metallic clip of teeth, a leap out equally swift, and Curly's face was ripped completely open from eye to
* Spitz- Buck’s archrival and original leader of Francois’ dog team. A fierce, treacherous, husky, Spitz is used to fighting with other dogs and winning.
Call of the Wild is a novella written by Jack London that is ironic about life and the way we look at it. We look at life as humans and other things are just living in our world, that nothing else has a say in the world because we do not speak the same languages. Example of this is how we “own” dogs, cats, horses, etc; we do not “own” them, they are their own being with goals of their own. We may not be able to understand what they are saying or what they are thinking, but as London explains throughout his novella, one dog in particular has such high aspirations for himself that he will not quit for anything and his name is Buck. Never giving up on what you want in your life is the real message in this story that is being portrayed through the life of Buck.
