Abstract: “Breaking the Language Barrier Within the Exercise & Health Field” involves expanding the knowledge of language to be able to aid to patient needs and communicate well with them in the health field. In my case since I aspire to be an athletic trainer, I would use this to be understanding, as well as helping, athletes who are injured. The courses that I plan to be taking to fulfill the 3D requirement will be Exercise Physiology (BIOL 332), Sports Nutrition (NUTR 215) and Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 201). Exercise Physiology is a course that is required to be taken for exercise science majors. It involves studying the adaptive and physiological responses to exercise that occurs in the human body. This course also talks about the effect …show more content…
After I graduate, my profession is to become an athletic trainer and help those who become injured during physical activity. By taking exercise physiology and sports nutrition, I will be able to understand how the body functions during exercise and what factors contribute to being a healthy athlete. As an athletic trainer and hopefully future basketball coach, this will allow me to understand my athletes and how they can keep themselves healthy. By taking Spanish, I am able to incorporate that into being an athletic trainer by being able to communicate with the athletes I am attempting to help so that they can be healthy enough to participate in their sport. Since these courses coincide with one another, what I hope to gain from them is a blended understanding of the various people and cultures that I will encounter in being part of a health profession. I would also like to gain a better understanding of how the body works and how to keep the human body healthy from any injury involving physical activity so that when I am an athletic trainer and coach I will be able to help out as many athletes as I
Majoring in kinesiology will be another step to achieve my goal in becoming an athletic physical therapist. I plan to take course to sharpen my knowledge about kinesiology, be in a pre-physical therapy program, networking and do internships. Minoring in spanish could make me more competitive because it’s great to be able to speak another language. Therefore, it won’t as be hard for me to get a job since physical therapy is popular right
Another common problem among the Asian population in Flushing, Queens would be the large number of linguistic and cultural barriers that may attribute to the large factor of lower cancer preventive screening rates. While there are a growing number of small private offices opening up in Flushing to cater to the influx of Asian immigrants, a large percentage preferred to seek health care in their language opposed to English. Especially in Chinese cultural trends, the older generation of Chinese people tend to be quieter and less likely to voice their ailments or treatment options with doctors. Ultimately, there may be physician bias which could have a lasting impact on diagnosis and management if they understood
At the age of 5, I returned to the U.S from China. Like many Chinese-American children, I was a kid sent by my parents to another country to live with my grandparents in the countryside of China. By the time I came back to the U.S, I already had a difficult time catching up with my peers due to my language barrier. Those days were the harshest. Not being able to communicate with other kids, I became extremely outcasted as an individual. Eventually, this lead to countless hours of doodling flowers and sunsets on my own. As Ive gotten older, I realized that art was my outlet. It became a way for me to express a language without having to understand the rules and reasons behind a language. Although I struggled with this language barrier for a
Some of the major skills that students gain from majoring in Exercise Science are exceptional knowledge in human anatomy, and physiology relevant to exercise and wellness. The knowledge
August first 2012 was the day I moved to the United States, I remember it like it was yesterday but I can’t express in words how scared was I coming to a new place with no friends, and without the ability of making friends because I couldn’t say a word. Three years fast forward, I’m finding myself seating in front of my computer and trying to convince you that I’m ready for ESL.05. As a second quarter DeAnza student I have taken five ESL classes so far. For me each one of those classes is like a bus stop that you need to wait for the bus to arrive in order to get to your destination so ESL 273 was a bus stop that I needed to wait in order to get to my destination ESL 05. ESL 273 has prepared me to ESL.05 by teaching me important writing strategies,
My academic plan is to earn a bachelor’s degree in Human Biology and then go into the Pre-occupational Therapy professional program to earn my master’s degree. I want to become a pediatric occupational therapist so that I can accomplish my two main career goals which are to work with children and have a positive impact on their lives. I would also like to major or minor in Spanish. I have taken Spanish classes since the seventh grade and truly love the language. I want to continue to pursue Spanish and eventually become fluent in the language so I can help even more people. I feel that my interest in the Spanish language and culture has directly influenced my love of traveling. I would really enjoy studying abroad when I get to college. I
Both of these majors fascinate me, for chemistry explores the properties of chemicals in depth, while neurology delves into the brain’s structure and physiology. Both would provide a strong background for my desired career in medicine. Throughout my college career, I also plan to conduct research relating to medicine and neuroscience. This will prepare me for both medical school and my training beyond secondary schooling, and it will possibly advance the discoveries in the medical field. Additionally, I will minor in Spanish because I wish to become fluent in a second language to further my skill set and my range of communication abilities. As Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States, being able to speak fluently will be important for physicians of the future. To advance this goal, I hope to study abroad for either a summer or a semester, focusing on both my Spanish speaking abilities and medicine in an international setting. I also intend to minor in dance, join a dance-centric school club, and perform throughout my college career. Since a young age, I have held a passion for expressing myself with dance. College will provide me with the opportunity to further my skills while sharing this beautiful art form with others through
Author Amy Tan introduces readers to her perspective of the voracious love relationships between mother and daughters. In the story, the protagonist is a young girl called Jing Mei who is also the main character in the story with her Mother being the antagonist. Being first generation Americans set forward multiple expectations and implications for the protagonist to deliver. Young Jing Mei struggled to find the freedom to express her own identity rather then live up to her mothers standards. Both mother and daughter soon fell into conflict because of their complexities and views. Jing Mei’s mother wanted to transform her into a prodigy, as Jing Mei just wanted life and experience life as a normal american girl. As being the product of an immigrant family, as a parent, Mother Woo wanted very open opportunity for her child. Being in this country was a privilege and had much more meaning to Mother Woo than Jing Mei. Multiple barriers were experienced by both charters. Cultural indifferences, the search for identity, and self improvement were key components to the personal interoperation established to readers through out its synopsis.
This source addresses multiple questions regarding the writing center working with “language 2” students, such as if they should use the same methods with language 2 students that they use with English speaking students that have a lot of issues with writing. It explains that not all language 2 students have the same issues with writing and that each student has a unique situation that should be treated with care and attention. Their overall goal is to see what happens when language 2 writers and tutor work together when the proper training is involved. This source helps expand my research by providing more questions and solutions to the common issues between tutors and “language 2” writers. It gives both the tutor and writers perspective and
Patient translation services can be critically important in physical therapy clinics. All patient-facing materials must be updated as well and distributed to patients in a language they can understand. The topic will address the barriers and the culturally competent approaches for each of the four populations (Native American, Black, Asian and Hispanic patient populations)
Nobody’s born with the language they speak today. Everyone is born with a clean tongue that is transformed to make sounds and words that are native to their homeland and people they were raised by. Language can’t be described as a trait, like the color of your skin or the width of your shoulders. When society discriminates against individuals that speak differently, they are judging them based on how they were raised and how they were taught to speak, people don’t see them as just a person that didn’t have a choice of how they wanted to communicate, and conformed to fit into a puzzle of a whole area of people that sound the same way. I believe that people are molded by experience and adapt to the environment they were placed in. Life is

Today, it was a challenge working with an individual who spoke very minimal English. I found this challenge to be very helpful because this is a common problem in the area that I am from. Many individuals in my home town area only speak Spanish, so it was interesting in seeing how a language barrier can affect the direct health care for a patient. I felt that the language barrier was a problem for the care for this patient because I felt that we were not able to address and assess his pain as accurately as we could have. We understood that he was in pain but he was not able to describe the pain to or tell us what relived his pain or made his pain worse. The things that went well today was I was able to use many skills that I have not been
Total communication (TC) in itself is a philosophy created in order to more properly educate deaf children and provide them with the communication that they desperately need, combining oralism teachings and signs that somewhat resemble the English language and grammar. If TC was implemented properly, deaf children who learn under the TC philosophy would not end up bilingual and therefore not be bicultural in regards to the deaf and hearing cultures. Those who are taught language through the TC philosophy are not considered bilingual and or bicultural because rather than being somewhat fluent in English and ASL, students are lacking in fluency in both languages. Oralism, which is the “hearing” way for a deaf child to learn English, has been
