In many American households, homework is the main cause of stress. Some people think that America is not so well and adding more homework will fix that problem. A study by Indiana University found that students who do more homework tend to get higher scores on standardized tests” (“Do Kids Need Homework?”). “Plus, part of growing up is learning to balance outside activities and the demands of schoolwork” (“Should Parents Help Kids With Homework?). Teachers have their reasons as well. “Teachers say homework is important in the learning process and can help kids develop study and organizational skills. They say kids need to practice what they've learned in school so that the material sticks in their brain” (Strauss). “Having too much homework …show more content…
Other people, who want to get rid of homework, say it’s busywork and it has no educational value. “Many supporters of no-homework policies say kids need more free time to play and relax after a long day in school” (“Do Kids Need Homework?”). “Books like The Case Against Homework (Crown, 2006) and The Homework Myth (Da Capo, 2007) have argued that too much of today's homework is mindless busywork that takes away from family time and does not improve academic performance. Homework's critics argue that kids should instead be reading for enjoyment, exploring and being creative” (“Too Much Homework? Parents, Schools Seek Balance”). “Researcher Cooper says studies show that up until fifth grade, homework should be very limited. Kids in middle school shouldn't be spending more than 90 minutes a night on homework. In high school, the limit is two hours, Cooper says” (Strauss). Finally, “In a poll by the National Sleep Foundation, one in four parents said their child had lost sleep because of homework. A lack of sleep can affect how well kids do in school” (“Do Kids Need …show more content…
This is because I believe that students already get enough practice in an average school day and giving them too much homework will lead them to despise learning and school. I think teachers should not give homework for three main reasons: so kids can have more family time, participate in other out-of-school activities without worry, and so they don’t have to stay up late finishing homework, which greatly strains their academic performance. Homework affects your family life in two main ways. First, you don’t have time for family activities after school if you are overwhelmed with homework. And second, if you stay up late doing homework, you will be too tired to do any family activities. Teachers should not consider other activities when assigning homework. This is because not all students have the same
By not giving out homework, students will work harder in class and have better grades. Teachers have to understand that if students are tired from late nights, they wouldn't be able to work efficiently during the day. In addition, students would be much more excited to come to school because they know they wouldn't have to worry about getting any homework. In 2010, a survey was taken and it showed that about 70% of teen ages 11 to 17 get less than 8 hours of sleep per day due to the amount of homework they have to do (Logos). According to Alfie Kohen, students feel forced to do their homework, therefore they aren't learning as much as they should (Ethos). Students lose interest in the topic and do not benefit from what they’re learning. In China, a cry for change by a mother who lost her thirteen year old daughter who committed suicide due to her inability to achieve in math, the mother considers homework is a huge negative factor toward her deceased daughter's tragic ending along with the pressure of society (Pathos). Such a story should leave us wondering, how many more children need to suffer the silent epidemic of school stress. Statistics prove the leading cause for the majority of physical and emotional complaints leading up to diagnosis of depression in middle and high school due to the amount of
One reason we shouldn’t have homework is because kids don’t get enough sleep for the next day. “We really want the kids to go home at 4 o’clock, tired. We want their brain to be tired,” Kelly Elementary School Principal Jackie Glasheen Said in an interview with a local TV station.” Said time.com. First, Kids are already tired from school when they get home. But, with homework, they get tired faster and then don’t even get enough sleep for the next day. Like the principal said they think that making kids tired is learning, but it doesn’t really mean we’re learning more, it is just wearing us out and making us not want to work any longer.“Brandy Young told parents, she would not formally assign any homework this year, asking students instead to eat dinner with their families, play outside and go to bed early.”Is what the article time.com explained. Consequently, homework makes kids not get enough sleep at night because they are up working on their homework half the night or even longer. These kids shouldn’t have to do this. According to Katie Reilly, “Second graders, for example, should do about 20 minutes of homework each night, but
Imagine having a full time job where you did not get paid, could not quit, and have at least a few hours of paperwork to complete each night. This is what students go through everyday with homework. Homework is assignments sent home from school for students of all ages to finish by a certain due date, for a grade. In the past decade, controversies over the amount of work kids and teens are given has lead many to study the benefits of homework to see if the work teachers assign is actually helping students academically and improving test scores. It has grown to an extreme amount, prevents kids and teens from getting the things they need in life, gets in the way of a good childhood, damages relationships, and has not proven to actually aid
Have you ever wanted to just shred up your homework or throw it out the window and have no consequences? Kids are assigned daily homework from the time they start kindergarten at the ripe young age of five. Is it really necessary? Does it even help better learning or even higher test scores? The amount of homework we do wastes time, money, paper, and trees because it’s practically the exact same thing we did in class that day. Homework causes kid’s and teen’s frustration, tiredness, little time for other activities and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. It also keeps everyone up; it has kids and teens staying up until they finish it, the parents trying to help them and the teachers grading it. So, I think that homework is
We should not have homework because it has a negative effect on home life. For example, Robert Marzano and Debra Pickering educational researchers state that, homework interferes with other home activities. With all the homework kids have, they get almost zero time to themselves, plus those kids who play sports may not have time for homework right away and are forced to do it later, right before bed. Homework makes kids feel overwhelmed to the point where they feel work is more important than family. Marzano and Pickering describe this saying, “homework adds to the culture; work is more important than family.” According to Marzano and Pickering homework can be a disadvantage to family without resources. Families that may not have
Teachers have been deciding if they want to get rid of homework. In reality, the students are getting excited about this because who really wants homework? But by doing this, it risks students not learning the material they are supposed to learn. Teachers should grade students based on whether or not they understand the material. So, homework should be graded as extra credit. If the homework gets graded as extra credit, then it won’t be counted against the student if they get it wrong, but help them if they get it right.
Most of the homework adolescents tend to receive from their teachers is busy work, and children and family agree this is not fair to them. This issue is affecting adolescents, parents, and families. When students are overloaded with responsibilities from schoolwork, their participation in extracurricular and social activities decreases. An argument over homework might seem trivial, but there are many negative effects on children who are attending school and go through this pressure.
School is stressful and tough with all the homework and tests, In Fact all of the students I interviewed say that there is too much homework and that they can't always get it all done. Many students say that they stay up late rushing on the homework, which in the long run will affect their grades which will affect their college that they get into, which in the end will affect their future job. “I feel rushed and sometimes in a hurry to get my homework done before practice” said one student. Some students around the world spend 13+ hours a week on homework alone which is too much. One primary school in new York has gotten rid of homework and outside of school projects all together, telling the kids that they should get outside and exercise.
The first reasons why we should get rid of homework in schools is children are overtired. This reason is important because being too tired is very bad. Children need at least 8 to 10 hours of sleep to get a proper education and children sometimes stay up to or past one o'clock from
Roberto Nevilis, a teacher in Venice, changed history when he created the first use of homework in 1095. Since then, students’ opinions of homework haven’t changed. Roberto Nevilis started homework as a way of punishing his students for not doing their work. Nowadays, homework is assigned to help students receive more practice for what they learned in school that day. Despite the good intentions that homework is supposed to provide, it actually proves more harm than good. In the twenty-first century, the increase of homework negatively affects American teens’ sleep schedules, stress levels, and after school opportunities. Parent involvement in homework can turn into parent interference.
When a class is almost over and a teacher starts assigning homework, every student's heart drops. When students have an excess of homework, they do not do as well. Even though homework is a good tool to help teachers teach students subjects, teachers should give less homework because too much homework causes mental health issues in students and less homework helps improve test scores.
Does anyone like having extra work after a long day? Well, since the beginning, when school became more of a right instead of a privilege, homework has been given, teachers assign it and students complete it. Since then, homework has been used in almost every school, everyday. Students and parents had never seriously questioned it. Now many parents and students are starting to question administrators and teachers over whether or not homework really is beneficial to students. Homework is not beneficial to students because there is little evidence showing a correlation between doing homework and doing better on tests, homework helps to diminish students’ enjoyment of learning, it forces them to have to give up other beneficial things to their
The majority of students have, at one point or another, wished for less homework. For some student’s homework is not a big issue but for other students it can take hours and even days to do all their homework. That wasted time could be used for enjoyment or learning life skills instead of homework. Nine in ten high school students reported feeling stressed about homework (Galloway 4). So, should students get less homework? Yes, students should receive less homework because it improves their well-being by reducing stress and its impacts on health, increasing leisure time, and showing that homework does not affect grades significantly.
Students, parents, teachers, administrators and other interested parties all seem to have strong and different feelings towards homework. Students complain that they have too much homework to complete outside of the hours they already attended classes. Students feel that they have personal lives to live and blow off homework while some parents and teachers believe that homework is the key to passing classes and preparation for college. This leads to teachers feeling pressured to push their students to succeed and this can easily get carried away. Parents and school systems still often discuss the topic of homework today. Should homework in school systems be stopped?
"I didn’t feel [stressed] until I was in my 30’s. It hurts my feelings that my daughter feels that way at eleven" (Ratnesar 313). This statement describes the intense issue facing the American Education System today. More and more students are spending a lot of out of school time on enormous amounts of homework. The overabundance of homework is putting pressure on the students, along with their parents. Our nation has steadily focused on after school studying to the point of possible exhaustion. In this paper, I will attempt to explain how educators are relying on homework as the major form of education, and how the amounts are too demanding on the students.
