The characters are a pivotal part of a narrative “because they provide a personification of the beliefs being described” (More, 2009, p.349). There are two different types of characters within a narrative: round and flat. Literary devices states, that “round characters are major characters in a story, who encounter contradictory situations, and undergo transformation during this phase. Therefore, these characters do not remain the same throughout the narrative.” In contrast, a flat character is a “type of character in fiction that does not change too much from the start of the narrative to its end” (Literary Devices, 2018). With these definitions in mind we can analyze the five characters within this film. The three main round characters are …show more content…
They are a pivotal role because they show how their actions affect the victim. The first instance we see of the traffickers is the women with the victim in the cab. She has barks direct orders to the driver to go to an address while the victim is trying to have a friendly conversation. The victim responds to the cab drivers question of where she is originally from, but as soon as she responds the women says demands him to drive and not talk. Quickly, the audience realizes who has the power in the film. Moreover, the first scene that we see the trafficker couple together is in the car stalking the victim. He states, “go get her… she will make us some money” (A21, 2018). This statement shows the true intentions of traffickers, it does not matter who the person is, but can she make us money. When they take the victim to dinner them man grabs a pile of cash from his pocket and the victim’s eyes widen. He hands her the hundred-dollar bill and the contract was made without the victim’s knowledge. After this scene, the man is continually giving items to the victim like necklaces and make-up to increase her appearance. There is no harm insinuated from eh traffickers until an aggressive argument takes place in the hotel room, and the victim sits there and just takes the abuse. Lastly, the cab driver could be argued as the most important person in the film. He represents society by being in contact with a victim but not
A trafficker, also known as a pimp, is anyone who receives cash or other benefits in exchange for sex with a victim (Smith 7). This form of organized crime is solely responsible for the wide spread of sex trafficking throughout the world. Corruption and greed of these traffickers makes it possible for sex trafficking to quickly and easily flourish. Traffickers can be anyone. They are both male and females from several different ethnic backgrounds. Child sex traffickers transport children away from home to avoid exposure and to lessen the chances of the child returning home. Throughout the United States, most major cities refer to the “track” as a street
1.Describe the main characters of the film: Who are they? What are their motivations? What are their strengths and weaknesses? What are the obstacles they face?
The authors did a great job of starting the second part with a strong introduction that makes the reader feel that human trafficking exists and it exists next to us. “The harsh truth is, modern-day slavery is in your town. You are not protected from it by nationality, race gender, or income. It can afflict anyone – gardener down the street, the construction crew on a local office building, your neighbor’s housekeeper, your daughter on
Ray Bradbury, author of Fahrenheit 451 and various other short stories once said, "Plot is no more than footprints left in the snow after your characters have run by on their way to incredible destinations," and his observation is a perfect analysis of the importance of characters in fiction. The actions of characters in stories are what guide the most beloved ones. When a story is beloved it is most often driven by love of the characters, but the real question is why do readers love and relate to fictional beings. The types of characters that are most loved in fiction have roots in reality, and traits that make them more relatable to the reader.
As we discussed, traffickers lure victims with many methods, but why? Why are there around
They make the plot more important. We semi get attached to these characters. In the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird" a character that is important would be Scout. Scout is important to this novel because one she sticks up for her family and herself, second because she’s brave, and third Scout is very honest.
Lack of Understanding Victimization. When a victim has no relationship with outsiders, this causes them to depend on their leader, which can lead to the issue of one not knowing they are a victim of a serious crime (Clawson et al., 2009, p. 18). Many female victims see their pimp “as their boyfriend and everyone else as the enemy”, and that is exactly what the trafficker wants them to think (Clawson et al., 2009, p. 19). The dealer knows that they need to have their victims trust, so that the females can be persuaded into the trap of human trafficking. For some victims, they have no home and been in trouble with law enforcement before because of prostitution, which leads them to distrust authority (Clawson, 2009, p. 19). These types of victims may refuse to be open with law enforcement, as they do not want to be convicted of a crime, and see themselves as the
The result of these characteristics give each story suspense and mystery, leaving the readers wondering what each character will do next and what further action will take place. Characters hold a primary role in determining the outcome of a story, which is the reasoning behind the many similarities and differences among literary characters. Also, a clear example is the similar plots with two completely different outcomes. Once the audience understands a character, they are capable of building on their existing knowledge to foreshadow events or understand the text more logically, which is evident when reading these
Major characters help to develop the theme because the dialogue and actions they use can change how people treat others of a different race. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus and Calpurnia were two major characters with roles that heavily influenced the book. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, the major role of Arnold helped to compare to the role of Atticus in To Kill a
A story would go nowhere without the characters making something happen. Characters are used for everything in a story, they set the scene, make the plot happen, and everything inbetween. Characterization is a major deal for writers because without proper characterization, the plot will not be able to go the way they want it to. This is also a big factor for the play, Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. He uses so many different characters to really push certain things to the audience, and to make the reader understand it so well.
Situations of human trafficking victims’ vary to a large degree. Many are romantically involved with a trafficker at first, then find the intention of the relationship to be altered once the subject of performing acts of a sexual nature is introduced. Others are victimized when they believe they are being hired to work as a dancer, model or nanny, when they agree to move to a distant location, only to find the job was never real. In nearly every instance, one or more methods of coercion are put into play by a
There are multiple ways that people can be trafficked, all terrifying and even life scarring towards a person. Hart stated, “ People are forced to work against their will, they believe that if they do not work, they will be either physically or emotionally hurt- being threatened constantly,” (Hart 7). This shows the true horrors of human trafficking. It is saying how that the traffickers inflict so much hurt onto a person that they will do anything the other person says at the snap
Traffickers, also known as pimps or johns, could be a family member to even friends or a gang. The three steps to finding a victim is to target, trick and traumatize them. Traffickers target young kids because of their vulnerability and how they are naive. According to the scholarly article titled, Sex Trafficking of Children in the United States: Overview and Issues for Congress, Kristin Finklea also writes that “Pimps/traffickers prey on vulnerable youth and groom their victims to enter “the life” of being forced to sell sexual services for the profit of others. They manipulate and abuse—physically, mentally, and emotionally—their victims to maintain control” (Finklea). Children get lured by traffickers because of how they use physical and psychological manipulation on them. Traffickers will establish a form of “trust” with their next victim by creating a “caring relationship” at first in which the victim will be loyal to their pimp even if they are mistreated. A trafficker
All of these characters have a major significance in the story. All of these characters and other very important items in the story will be discussed in this
