Biography of Jeffrey Dahmer, A Murderer Jeffrey Dahmer was born May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He had a typical family, which consisted of his father Lionel Dahmer, his mother Joyce Dahmer, and his little brother David. When Jeffrey was eight years old, he and his family moved to the small town of Bath Township, Ohio. Since Jeffrey didn't have any friends there, he would spend most of his time in the woods behind their house. There he would mutilate and decapitate small animals, mostly dogs, cats, and squirrels.
Jeffrey Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960 to parents Lionel and Joyce Dahmer (Davis, 1998). While living in his birthplace of Wisconsin, Dahmer was described by his father to be “’[v]ery exuberant, he liked to wrestle, liked to run around, ham it up for the camera and he liked to play with kids and get together with them’” (Harris, 1996). As Dahmer entered adolescence, his father earned a Ph.D. in chemistry and the family began to move around Ohio (National Center for Crisis Management, n.d.). After the move, his parents fought often and eventually divorced. During this period, Dahmer became “withdrawn and uncommunicative” (Jeffrey Dahmer, 2017) and
Jeffrey Dahmer, also commonly known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, is one of America’s most notorious serial killers. In the span of nearly 15 years, between the years 1978 and 1991, it is estimated that Dahmer was responsible for the death of fifteen to seventeen young men (Radford University). As his nickname suggests Dahmer was known for drugging his victims, then raping them, then disembodying them, and if the mood fit him, cooking and eating his victims. Dahmer’s unique case resulted in him being psychologically analyzed and diagnosed by at least seven different psychologists during his trial (Palermo & Bogaerts, 2014). This paper seeks to explore the diagnostics given to Jeffery Dahmer and prove, through the use of available information, their accuracy.
Jeffery Dahmer is arguably the most notorious serial killer -cannibal in history. Targeting men and boys, Dahmer‘s life of crime began with drinking and sex offending. His murders were exceptionally gruesome, often involving rape, torture, necrophilia, dismemberment, and cannibalism. The media often commented on how “normal” Dahmer appeared. Jeffrey Dahmer made everyone question how one develops into such a monster. By the time of his apprehension, Dahmer had sodomized, murdered, and cannibalized at least seventeen men, mostly black, Hispanic or Asian, in the Milwaukee area between the years of 1978 until his arrest in 1991 (Williams pg.1).
Explained through psychoanalytic theory Jeffrey Dahmer’s personality and criminality can be seen as a result of the events of his early life traumatic events. Unfortunately, for Dahmer and his victims he was not able to be well adjusted, socially productive, and functional member of society. Instead, Jeffrey Dahmer’s un-socialized id, weak ego and poorly developed superego formed the personality and ultimately lead to criminality of infamous serial killer we know
Serial murder crime though rare, is not a a new phenomenon. This crime has been committed for centuries and will continue to be a crime that is committed throughout the world. It is unfortunate and scary that this is probably one of the most serious of crimes that cannot be prevented. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, serial murderers commit their crimes because they want to. Rehabilitation is not obtainable for serial killers due to their inability for remorse and empathy, or to see people as people and not objects(Knight 2006). This research paper will focus primarily on serial murder within the U.S. First and foremost, a legal definition provided by the U.S. Department of Justice will be presented to set forth the discussion of this research paper. As follows will be a detailed discussion explaining serial killer typologies with the use of examples of known serial killers in the U.S. Types of serial killers are: power oriented, mission oriented, visionary, and hedonistic, each typology will be clearly defined and explained. Some serial killers can have a mixture of each typology’s characteristic. Serial killers that will be discussed and used as examples to represent the content of this research paper will be, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Robert Berdella, Jeffery Dahmer, and lastly the most prolific serial killer in American history, Gary Ridgeway. Problems with studying serial killing, are that because of rarity and access. Most of what we think

Jeffrey Dahmer, one of the most famous serial killers, was a sick and extremely twisted man. Rape, necrophilia, dismemberment, and cannibalism were all involved in Dahmer’s murders. Jeffrey Dahmer was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on May 21, 1960. Dahmer had a fairly normal childhood. His parents recall that Jeffrey was an “energetic and happy child.” Dahmer’s parents believe something went wrong with their son at around the age of four after he had a surgery to try and correct a double hernia. He started becoming distant at around age 10; soon, his interest involved dead animals and drinking. Eventually, his parents grew tired of his outrageous drinking problem and Jeffrey’s father made him enlist in the army. Soon enough, he was kicked out
Seventeen. Seventeen men and boys who never got the opportunity to have a future. Seventeen families who grieved and lost hours of sleep, waiting on their son, brother, or friend to come home but never would. Seventeen young lives taken by one of the most infamous serial killers in the history of the United States; Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer. Jeffrey Dahmer was much more than a murderer; he raped, ate, and sometimes preserved certain body parts of his victims. But, why? What drove this man to commit such gory and violent crimes? As a child, Dahmer experienced severe negligence by his parents. His mother was a stay-at-home mom (and psychologically ill) and his father was a student at Marquette University. Jeffery’s father traveled for his studies and was never in the household. This engendered his mother’s desire for her husband’s affection but never received it due to his absence. The problems that existed between them provoked a lack of the childhood care that young Jeffery needed. He was often lonely and excluded himself from people. As a child, Dahmer had an extreme and odd fascination in the dismemberment of animals. His parents never gave it much attention and thought this interest was very normal. This was only the beginning of Jeffery’s anatomic study of dead beings. Dahmer may seem like a complete psychopath and indeed he was, but he is only one of thousands of serial
As a child Jeffrey Dahmer was very gregarious, loveable, and jubilant. He lived a normal life alongside his parents Lionel and Joyce Dahmer in a small house in the forest near Bath, Ohio. It was not until a minor surgery to treat a double hernia he had at the age of six that his behavior started to change. The surgery may have been minor, however the damage created disturbing changes within him. After the surgery he became more reclusive and
It left him feeling open and exposed. Two years later at age six, Jeffrey’s little brother David was born. According to Jeffrey Dahmer’s Childhood, “though this did not have a dramatic effect on Dahmer’s life he stayed pretty much neutral to his brother's existence and they never became close (Jeffrey Dahmer's Childhood, The Web,1)”. After the birth of David, the Dahmer family had moved to Ohio. A few years later at age eight, he had been sexually molested by a neighbor boy. Although it was not reported until the probation officer entered Dahmer’s records. However, this terrible childhood incident may play a very vital role into Dahmer’s crimes that he committed later on. After this incident, his parents began to quarrel back and forth leading to their divorce (Jeffrey’s Senior year) but demonstrating that his home was “...no safe haven for a child.” (Jeffrey Dahmer's Childhood, The Web,2) “By age 10, Dahmer was experimenting with dead animals: decapitating rodents, bleaching chicken bones with acid, nailing a dog’s carcass to a tree and mounting its head on a stake. His parents worried but figured it was just a boy thing,”(Jeffrey Dahmer's Childhood, The Web,3.) In high school, he was very
The twentieth century is marked by several remarkable events, from World War I to World War II, to the cold war and nuclear arms race to a plethora of other distinctive occurrences. This time period, however, possesses a rather gruesome attribute as well. It was in this century, the year of 1970 to be exact, in which the term “serial killer” was first coined. Serial killing ran rampant during the 1900s, riddling each of its decade with bloodshed and horrific methods of murder. Notorious killers, such as Albert Fish and Richard Ramirez, made their debut in this century, brutally and methodically slaughtering innocent victims in the most ghastly ways. The violence via psychopathic murder was so much so during this era that “Serial Killer” became known as the “twentieth century bogeyman.”
