When I was in my junior year of high school my dad have talk to me on what college I wanted to attend. At first I was bit skeptical where I wanted to go, however I had a passion to become an air pilot, so I chose to attend Middle Georgia State. When I looked at the cost to just attend one year of school I had to figure out how I was going to pay to attend because one thing I knew for sure was that my parents were not going to pay much for it. So as my junior and senior year was going by I was applying to all these big scholarships like the Coca Cola, Dell, and even Burger King it all landed to me with losing both years. In the middle of senior year I decided to apply for local organizations but still have not obtain a scholarship of any sort.
As a young Puerto Rican, I always wanted to be a nurse or a doctor. This is because I have always had a caring heart and I enjoyed to take care of everyone. My educational goal is to get a Doctorate degree in Nursing. Furthermore, to reach that goal I have to start working on my Associate Degree. Therefore, my first educational goal is to begin and complete my associate degree. My career Goal after graduation is working as an RN in the Sarah Todd Nursing Home; the nursing home which I currently work at as a CNA. Being a CNA allows me to reach out and help people. Continuing my education would increase the amount of care that I can provide.
In article “Want to get into college? Learn to fail”(2012) Angel B. Perez is vice president and dean of admission and financial aid at pitzer college in Claremont california. He teaches in the college counseling certification program of the university of california los angeles. He argues that students applying to college are pressured by parents and educators to seem flawless on their application. The students believe the schools are looking for the perfect students. Perez says he spoke to a student in china during a trip and he asked her what she does for fun and she replied i thought i wasn’t supposed to tell you that. I feel that it wasn’t necessary to add this into his article because it should affect her chances of getting that
I have come from a struggling background. My parents never attended college and my mother has been the sole provider for my family for many years. I have watched her struggle trying to provide for us and I determined long ago that I would strive to do more for my future family than what she was able to give us. My dreams required that I attend college. It is because of the financial hardship my family faces every day that the financial burden that comes from attending college rests solely on my shoulders. Although I am employed, I do not make enough money to pay for the cost of living and my school expenses. My goal is to become an attorney and I do everything in my power to attain that goal. I excel in all of my classes and have become a leader on my campus and in my community. I rely on scholarships like the Silas Purnell Scholarship to recognize these attributes in me and with the help of this award I will be able to take my last step in my path of earning my baccalaureate degree and making my goals my
Last year around this time of year, I was devastated when I found out I could not attend my first choice school, the University of Delaware. This was not because I had not been accepted, but because it was far too expensive. This is when I realized how important scholarships, like the Malcom Wesley Myers and Anna Geary Myers Scholarship are.
As my senior year comes around, it has become more real to me that I have to take charge of my future. I deserve and need this scholarship just as I need oxygen to breathe. Being the first in my family to attend college or even have the idea in their head means I’m on my own to discover what to do to get into college and how to come up with the means. I
Everything changed for me my last year of high school. Like most seniors I was busy applying to colleges, studying for tests, volunteering in the community and trying to figure out what I aspired to be when I grew up. I thought I wanted to be an Interior Designer and I traveled with my parents all over the country touring colleges that offered the major. I achieved good grades in school and I was accepted at several of the schools I applied to. Once I decided on a university I began my search for scholarships to help fund my education. By chance I ran across an audio scholarship contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The essay topic was about the importance of Veterans to our past and future. Because I was a military dependent this topic was near and dear to me. I worked really hard on my submission and to my surprise and my parent’s delight; I was selected as the winner for my state. The opportunities I experienced as a result of representing
I had an honest conversation with my parents and told them I had to leave the college and I wanted to attend a Historically Black College or University, like I originally planned in high school. My parents were fine with the decision, however, they informed me that they could not and would not be paying for my education and the financial burden would be on me. My second semester in college I focused on studying and talked with mentors and advisors about my feelings and plans. During that time I gained admittance to Tuskegee University and received a scholarship, however it was not the tuition scholarship I was hoping for. I continued working hard that semester, which lead me to raising my grade point average, that allowed me to receive the scholarship I had faith in
One day in 2011, I had an epiphany that I wanted to become the CEO of a hospital one day. The CEO of Rose Medical Center became aware of this and informed me that I could certainly have his job one day, but I must first go back to school and get my Master's degree. He is not the only person that has hounded me about going back to school. Many other managers, administrators and even family members have said the same. Clearly they see something in me that I had not quite yet see in myself. I think I am finally coming to the realization that if they think I can obtain a Master's degree, then I certainly possess the skills, knowledge and motivation to go back to school. It is time for me to shake up my content, routine life and take the step to bettering myself and fulfilling the commitment I made to myself on December 31,
Many colleges gave me scholarships and acceptance letters to get into their colleges. Some of the few schools that accepted me were Berkeley, Ohio State University, Indiana University, University of Houston, and much more. My dream school for what I was studying was Berkeley, so I was stoked to see that I got a full ride scholarship to it. I started screaming with joy once I saw the letter. I called my mom immediately after I got the letter and then called my dad after. I always tried my hardest to get into that college to become an optometrist. Everything I ever wanted was starting to come
The american dream is defined as an american social ideal that stress egalitarianism and material prosperity. Some people do not think that the american dream is an actual, but rather a social idea that people just say. I believe that the american dream is something that people are able to achieve by working hard and having the want to better themselves. People from all over the world come to america to better their lives whether it be because of poverty, or security, they all come here to get away from bad things. As Ted cruz said We need to remain a nation that doesn't just welcome but that celebrates legal immigrants who come here seeking to pursue the American Dream.
With all this being said, I’ve always strived to better myself. The best way to accomplish this is to receive a college education. Sadly, college is a big expense for my family, especially due to recent events within the family. Last year for nearly nine months my father was without work because of an injury to his back. This made it hard for us to accomodate so quickly to less income coming in. Now that he is back to work is has been easier but still the hardships aren’t gone. My grandmother has just undergone surgery for her eyes which rendered her blind and is now living with us as she needs close supervision. If awarded any scholarships, it can ease up some of the worries and lighten the
On this particular day, I sit at my dining room table writing about myself hoping that one hundred years from today somebody is reading this. I am seventeen years old, a sister of two and daughter of my parents. My family consists of three dogs, two turtles, one bunny, and three guinea pigs additionally. I am currently an early high school graduate just awaiting graduation day. I love playing sports with my dad, but I fancy design and creativity . I am the oldest kid in my entire family plus will be the first one to graduate from high school. All the pressure is on me not only for the reason that I have to set an instance to my younger sister and brother but as well as my younger cousins. Have you ever been in this position? All you want
I want to go to college not to please my community or to get a specific job, my desire to go to college concerns who I want to be. I want to be well educated, to understand the world around me, to be someone who is alway learning and growing. As a lover of history, I am inspired by the people who have come before me, people who have worked hard, showed determination, and done great things. I aspire to fill even a portion of their shoes. I have struggled for years to discover what my purpose is and what I should strive for and so far the only thing I am sure of is that I want to learn and to be always intellectually curious. My hope is that along the way of learning and working I will hit upon the thing I am supposed to do. Once that spark is
The possibility of furthering my education has always fascinated me. With the cost of tuition going up and the size of college classrooms going down, college student development is migrating from the classroom to the offices of multiple advisors and staff members across the university. Thus, I believe college student development; more specifically academic advising will be an exciting area of growth in the higher education community in the years to come. Post-Appalachian I seek to join an academic advising team, in a learning assistance program for student-athletes. My goal is to lead an energetic and ambitious team, in helping students achieve their academic ambitions, while finding ways to better serve students through the registration and advising
