Many students across the nation are attending schools that have seven classes during each school day as their schedule, one of them being Conroe High School. But behind the scenes, students are not exactly satisfied with these conditions, but they are forced to accept this brutal schedule as part of their everyday lives. That is why Conroe High School’s principal, Dr. Weatherly, should change the school’s schedule to have less, but longer, classes in a single day to create a less stressful environment for the students’ and teachers’ benefit. Stress is a major factor that contributes to the students’ performance and state of mind. The effects of stress on a student’s ability to achieve adequate grades can be extremely detrimental. The weight
Students today spend the majority of their weekdays at schools which can result in stress due to many factors. It is important for students to learn to cope with pressure because it is an important skill for overall health. Grades can cause stress and anxiety in many ways. For example, a student that is receiving “bad” grades can have stress because they feel pressured by the teachers or parents to get better grades, and the student may feel that their peers are judging them because of their grades. On the other hand, a student who is receiving “good” grades may feel stress due to the pressure of maintaining their grades for the sake of their peer’s judgement and parent’s expectations. Sources of stress in schools include: Teacher Interactions, Academic Stress, Peer Interactions, and Academic Self-Concept (Helms and Gable 6). The manifestation of stress results in emotional, behavioral, or psychological distress (Helms and Gable 6). Grades are a factor in all of the sources mentioned, the student may feel the teacher disapproves of them, their peers don’t respect them, and their self-esteem will be impacted because of poor grades. This can result in behaviour and emotional issues which further the student’s insecurities and can cause psychological problems in the long term. Letter or percentage grades say nothing about these issues, it is very difficult to spot stress in children and the resulting behaviour due to stress can be misinterpreted if the parents and teachers are not made aware. Summary assessments can help detect stress in students, where the student can explain how they are feeling and the teachers and parents can detect high levels of stress. Test anxiety is another manifestation of stress in students today; unfortunately, many schools and teachers face a huge responsibility in which the students must perform well in order for teachers to keep their jobs and for schools to
Students feel as though schools try to contain them and that they are not able to be themselves. They are forced to sit in a chair for a certain amount of time and to quietly complete assignments. The thought of this recurring activity results in students caring less about school, which eventually makes their grades decrease. By shortening the school days, students wouldn’t be as distressed about going to school and their grades would be higher. Fewer school hours per day would permit students to have enough time to study, complete school assignments, participate in after-school activities and be able to get to bed by a decent hour.” Rachel D, Teen Talk student writer.
Students at Guilmette Middle School in Lawrence, Massachusetts are in the classroom from 7:30 in the morning until 3:30 in the afternoon, which is 90 minutes longer than most American school days (Scholastic Scope, pg. 30). One reason for the extended day is an attempt to address the decline in American test scores, but is more desk time the best solution to this and other problems? A longer school day is not the answer. School days should not be extended because more time does not mean more learning, longer days take away from hobbies, and kids are already overwhelmed with school.
Do you ever find yourself stressing for a certain class and working on homework instead of paying attention for the class you are in? A major solution to this problem that many students at Wellington- Napoleon High School face is to change to the hybrid schedule which would give us more instructional time in core classes, have a variety of classes each week, and finally, have more class options instead of unneeded or extra classes. Around the school you hear many people constantly complaining about the new seven hour schedule and various problems that they are faced with throughout the school day. I feel like there are many simple solutions to all the problems with our high school’s schedule that the staff should really consider.
In this outline, Jason W. Brooks goes over what advantages the principle of Newton High School in Iowa, Bill Peters promoted during his speech with the Newton Community School District Board of Education. Peter’s speech consisted of the positives that come along with having a blocked schedule also he states how flexible the schedule can be. The two main arguments are the flexibility and to keep the seniors on campus. The president believes that “Block scheduling not only puts some kids through a freshman (college) year’s worth of
“49 percent of students reported feeling “a great deal of stress” on a daily basis. Half reported doing three or more hours of homework per night, and 26 percent noted that they had been diagnosed with depression” (Ossola, 1). With all that is expected of students in school, some rules she be changed to reduce these crazy issues. If schools would reduce homework, start school later, changed dress codes, and extend lunches, student would thrive and succeed more in school.
Nowadays there are so many problem in the schools of America. The biggest problem school faces is stress. Stress is a state of mental emotional strain or tension on the brain or body. One of the ways kids usually get stressed is from homework. Teachers today assign about one homework sheet for each class which means we get at least seven items of homework to take home a day. Another area of stress for students is grades. Students feel a lot of pressure from their parents and teachers to get good grades. If students don’t get passing grades, they have to redo the classes and this is very stressful. Finally, kids feel stressed because of all the pressure they get on the end of trimester or semester, all the teachers telling if you don’t
I know stress very well. Last year I was a resource teacher for K-8. I was responsible for all standard curriculums in Kindergarten Language Arts, and Math curriculum for 5th, 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade and all middle school Intensive periods. Stressful can not even begin to explain my day. Not only was it everyday stress of a normal teacher form administration, district and state level. Understanding the standards for each grade level and subject was a job in itself. All of my students are on standard diploma, all very low, and/or a behavior problem. This causes stress and mental anguish. The time stress of going at a slower pace, trying to choose material that covers the most in depth practice with breaking down each step because the students still adhere to the common assessments is stressful. For 60 minutes a day I had three grade levels working on grade level material. I would not wish that type of day on anyone, it is just simply too much. I have high expectations for myself as well and I
One topic in psychology I find particularly interesting is the amount of stress that students in this generation are subjected to, specifically while in college. There are many reasons why this topic is interesting to me. The first and obvious reason is because I myself am a college student. Therefore, I have personally experienced the tremendous amount of stress that is put on students. I have also witnessed my friends and peers cope with this stress in various ways, some of which are healthy and some of which are not. I also am interested in this topic because I feel that it is universally an important topic. With the job market being so competitive, and the need for advanced degrees becoming commonplace, students are constantly focused on
A major academic stressor that college student have are grades. In college, in order to get into a certain program for the career students are competing with each other due to grades.
The topic I have chosen to persuade others is to stop putting stress on year 12s by taking out all their end of year exams. Exams really put stress onto students and could harm the students physically and psychologically. Overloading of stress can cause short term effect such as nausea, headache, increasing heart rate and faster breathing. The long term effects would have caused panic attacks, anxiety, depression and lower defense of immune system. To reduce the chance of that happening I designed this poster targeted towards high school students and teachers, to make them realizing that exam put a lot of stress on year 12 students, and encouraging them to seek alternative ways of assessing one’s ability for their future pathway. The final
Do you like to be stressed? When are you most stressed, probably during a busy time of the year? Maybe work for adult and then for the younger adult child most of them would answer school. Like most people no one enjoys to be stressed. Unfortunately there are many things in life that cause a person to feel stress. One of these things for some people would be there education. With America having many different law on education all American are given a free education till they are out of high school. With school being mandatory and being a major part of a person’s life it can also be a very stressful process for many people. The debate whether or not students are being pushed too hard in school had been discussed in great deal over the past
There are currently 21 states that feature schools that are actively operating on a four-day system. This has been a common trend that has steadily increased over the past two decades (Lake 1). Any child’s first reaction to the proposal of a four-day week would be overjoyed. To make these children's dreams come true, school systems must consider the advantages and disadvantages of a four-day school week. It’s not just about the students, but also about the school faculty, school administration, and parents. Of course, with every advantage there is also a disadvantage, but this is a positive essay full of positive points. Colby High School should change to a four-day school week because students will
Thesis: Today I will discuss about sources and effects of student stress and efficient ways to manage this emotional and physical strain.
Newth (2011) claims that modern day stress seems to be more widespread than ever causing interference with human intellect, emotional and interpersonal functioning. Therefore; I suggest that students will encounter stress and it will impact their academic performance. In this fast pace and performance driven society each organization needs well performing people. The only way we will know what people require to become productive and less stressed is to explore topics as my research question. The topic
