A Haven of Remote Beauty Completely Cutoff by Mother Nature, Once Again [What is Big Sur] Mother Nature’s relentless assault on California over the past five years, with historic drought immediately usurped by two unabatingly wet winters, has been well documented. Total infrastructure repairs are estimated to exceed one billion dollars after this winter alone. But in one remote and stunningly beautiful hamlet exhibiting all of California’s most iconic natural beauty, a sense of déjà vu and isolation of yesteryear takes hold of its residents. Big Sur, California, situated roughly midway between San Francisco’s hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley and the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, is perhaps best known for its perch along California’s famed Highway One, where the sky, sea and majestic mountains coalesce. Almost universally, those who live here do so in large part for their appreciation and love of the unshakable tranquility, proximity to a bountiful natural paradise with resplendent coastlines, and a sense of isolation. …show more content…
A community which at times has a push-pull relationship with it’s vital tourism industry, has been essentially cutoff from the outside world, once again, rendering those who live here with both great challenges and the sense of a return to a bygone era. With a natural barrier of rugged mountains to the east, California Highway One is the only real way to access this small seaside community. When unceasing rains rendered the Pfeiffer Bridge to the immediate north of Big Sur impassable this winter, it presented challenges. When subsequent landslides to the south reshaped the landscape and took a huge section of Highway One into the Pacific Ocean, it vaulted residents and business owners here into yet another period of isolation from the rest of the world. At some point of our lives we have been asked or have heard the question, what can we not live without?. Many of us will not hesitate to mention family, friends, food, water, and other living essential we find futile to our survival. If we place these living essentials in order of importance some of us may place family over water. If you then think about it, we can live without our family, but we cannot live without water. Water gives us life its in our fruits, foods, and drinks. Without water we would not be alive and healthy for the most part. The importance of water is substantial and California is currently experiencing one of its worst droughts in history. The planet itself is also undergoing global warming, which only contributes to a more severe drought occurring in California. Droughts in California’s history did not have the contributing factor of Global warming diminishing their severity. California’s drought and Global warming share a common link in the factor that would contribute to the severity of the drought we are currently experiencing in California and
The future of California is pretty good, for the state is projected to see growth in almost every sector of the economy as well as the population, but there are many concerns that must be addressed first in order to see California’s growth come to fruition. International trade and business is one of California’s largest industries and it’s expected to continue increasing, for many emerging economies are also located off of the Pacific Ocean. Growth in the economy is good, but requires resources that California has a limited supply of. The main resource California always needs is water, since most of the state’s population resides in the southern regions, which are arid and receive minimal precipitation annually. The state is planning on improving efficiency and the aqueduct system to increase the water supply while decrease the environmental effects California’s aqueduct’s have on regions like the San Joaquin River Delta. For many years California has been considered a very liberal and left state, which is due to the fact that the state has the toughest environmental legislation in the country. With such strong legislation ensuring the protection of the environment California has become a model state in the fight against climate change, and must remain vigilant for there are numerous species endemic to the state that are found nowhere else on the planet. Though there are numerous other factors’ affecting California’s future these are some of the most interesting areas to
Yet, humans have limited control on natural events, so this only reinforces the importance of managing water wisely. Recently California’s government has begun to focus more on sustaining and restoring the water supply. Dale Kasler (2016) articulates in his article some of the steps they have decided to make to solve this serious issue. The government has made the following investments: “$415 million for watershed restoration and other environmental aid for Lake Tahoe; up to $335 million for two proposed reservoirs in California, including the Sites reservoir north of Sacramento; $880 million for flood-control projects on the American and Sacramento rivers in Sacramento; and $780 million for flood-control projects in West Sacramento” (para. 10). This could be the first step to restoring the water to California. But these
The California Drought is one of the most catastrophic weather and climate related events in recent history. It has singlehandedly altered the geographic landscape of the state and brought down entire industries to a grinding halt. Not since global warming became a prominent fixture in the national spotlight has a climate issue so deeply challenged Californians to reconsider their lifestyles according to their climate conditions. This essay will examine the origins of climate change and the California Drought, how the two are related, the current state of California as a result of the drought, and the future outlook of California.
In today’s society, a good quality education is an important and valuable necessity. As a college student at Lone Star College, my college experience has greatly influenced me in an enormous amount of ways. By attending college, I have not only had a chance to receive a quality education and degree, but also an opportunity to socialize and interact with various people from different cultures. In addition, the professors on campus have been extremely helpful towards teaching me to succeed in both inside and outside the class room. Furthermore, my college experience at Lone Star has greatly influenced and encouraged me to be successful and achieve my dream of becoming a doctor.
According to this week’s lecture, this topic covered the significance of California, why is it a diverse state, and how does it attract many people from outside of California. Throughout this main idea, California is a number one largest history in the United State and this what brings people from others including outside of the country to explore California. California has been important through the huge change in this state that everyone had notice way back from the past and many great places to visit.
From the end of the Second World War to the present day, California strengthened its area as a political, social, and cultural trendsetter. California is also extraordinary than most other states because of its diversity in the people and climate. California’s diverse topographical features such as, the rainfall, temperature and sunlight vary throughout the state. The seasons also vary in California changing the areas climate. Since the beginning of European settlement in California, climate has become increasingly important in shaping the state’s economy (Osborne, 6).
As explained here, “… working together on a project should benefit the environment, the fishing industry, and the local economy,” the economy may get better. Among other things, the economy may rise, positively, with the growth of fishing industries and the energies created by the river itself. Grossi iterates the results, “‘… not to mention billions of dollars to complete this project. Is that reasonable?”’(Grossi) With this, Grossi shows the reader how terribly the economy is, at this moment, because of the unnecessary amounts of money going into this project, when, all they have to do is open the river. [Like, bruh.] A flawed restoration plan, will never amount to all of the expectations of the people, but it is surely to do so for some, typically, those with money that get benefits from the San Joaquin.
The first time I every experience the Wildcat Hills was during a difficult time in my life. My parents were going through a custody battle over my siblings and me. They were also both in the process of being remarried. So, when my step father brought us to the Wildcats to explore for the first time I realized how amazing our earth can be. Here in the county known for the Scotts Bluff National Monument, sits over 1,000 acres of land. It wasn’t just the sight at the top of the escarpment that took my breath away. It was the fact that whether you were at the bottom of the hills or the top, when the wind blew that’s all you can hear. It isn’t overwhelming, it is
California is currently battling a massive water shortage that is crippling the state. The lack of a rainy season for the last four years is really putting a strain on the local farmers, citizens, and communities. California typically has a Mediterranean type climate where it has a concentrated rainy season for six months and then plunges into high temperatures of dry heat. This has not been the typical pattern the last few years. California has received very little rain and is now searching for ways to conserve and produce water. Scientists believe that there is “blocking ridge” that is caused by high atmospheric pressure that causes disruption of typical wind patterns that blow storms to the California coast. The ridge extends from the subtropical Pacific between California and Hawaii to the coast of Arctic Ocean north of Alaska. California is now looking for ways to conserve water by focusing on water conservation and relandscaping public areas with drought resistant and native plants.
Death Valley has a number of different ecosystems in its park; the threats are the same, lack of rain, heat, human activity, and species themselves. While there is no outline for the natural occurrences, the human one is on the way of being helped. Fisheries and fencing off of threaten areas, and the restoration of them is the way we can fight the combatants that threaten these
The present drought is alarming to residents in California especially those in the agriculture sphere of the world’s seventh largest economy. At the current state, the water system has been overwhelmed throughout the state by the change in climate, increased industrial agriculture and water-rich consumption that has had nearly no restrictions until recently.
Tourism is an endeavour sought by an individual or a party of individuals, which leads to a movement from one place to another with the idealism of a specific task, to visit a place or several places with the primary purpose of achieving entertainment and increasing knowledge of countries, cultures, and their history. The expression ‘largest industry in the world’ is universally used with mention to tourism, ensuring its recognition as the largest generator of wealth (over 11.7% of the global gross domestic product) and employment (7% of the world’s jobs); this shows that tourism is indeed an important industry that depends on culture and legacy.(Budeanu, 2002) Vancouver is feasibly one of the most prevalent tourist destinations in Canada
As mentioned by Rimmington & Morrison (2009), the assistance from different parts of the world presents a new and diverse outlook for future research including theoretical innovations and revelations, cultural and environmental aspects, tourist destination and other ecotourism and recreational aspects of tourism and hospitality industry (Brotherton,
