World Religion 230 Part 9 Islam Page 302 1. Why is Muhammad so important in Islam? Muhammad was the chosen recipient and messenger of the word of God through the divine revelations. 2. Explain the role in Islam of traditions from other religions. **I don’t really understand this question. ** Islam sees Judaism and Christianity as versions of Islam, with revelations given in similar tradition by Allah that have been misunderstood by their followers. 3. How and why do Sunni and Shi'a Muslims differ in their view of the succession to Muhammad? Sunni Muslims believe “no one could succeed Muhammad in his nature and quality prophetic legacy.” The successor would be a guardian of the prophetic legacy, a caliph, with lesser authority and obedience to the Qur’an. Shi'a Muslims differ in believing Muhammad's successor should be an imam, that is “invested with the qualities of inspired and infallible interpretation of the Qur’an.” 4. Explain how decisions in Shari'a, the Muslim legal system, are reached. Shari’a is religious law that lays down governing principles for spiritual, mental, and physical behavior that must be followed by Muslims. 5. How does Muslim doctrine on the Qur'an demonstrate its huge importance to Islam? The Qur’an is the supreme revelation of God’s word in written form. Muslims have great respect for the Qur’an, its stored and handled with great care. Reading the Qur’an is believed to bring rewards and memorizing the Qur’an is said to have healing qualities. 6. What is Sufism, and why is it inappropriate to refer to it as a 'sect' of Islam? Sufism is a broader style of worship that goes beyond ‘sect’ (a group of people with somewhat different religious beliefs than those of a larger group to which they belong). Sufi practice focuses on the renunciation of worldly things, purification of the soul and mystical contemplation. 7. Explain tawhid, the Muslim doctrine of monotheism. Tawhid (Arabic for monotheism) is the belief that there is only one God. Monotheism is the single most important concept in Islam. Everything in Islam is built upon it. Islam calls to the
absolute oneness of God. No act of worship or devotion has any meaning or value if this concept is in any way compromised. 8. How far do the Five Pillars reflect Islam as the religion of a united community? The Five Pillars are the core beliefs and practices of Islam that bring together a worldwide community of believers with shared values and concerns. 9. Why is Mecca so important to Islam? Mecca is the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, it is a deeply spiritual destination for Muslims all over the world and is considered the heart of Islam. 10. Why do some Muslims today believe their religion to be incompatible with Western secularism? (Secularism - state and religion are separate, religion is a private matter.) Some Muslims believe Islam is not compatible with Western civilization because it is not compatible with democracy.
