Hey everyone! Can't Believe it's Week 7 already, one more week to go! Hope everyone is doing well this week! The internet has dramatically changed the way consumers think and make their decisions both with a positive and negative impact. At the same time, the internet has a positive impact on consumers because it allows them to easily gain access to a huge amount of information to make their purchasing decisions. According to the Pew Research Center, 81% of Americans use YouTube, which is a video sharing platform, and 69% use Facebook, which is a social networking site (Auxier, 2021). Customers can easily find product reviews, price comparisons across retailers and see what respected friends and influencers recommend on these and other websites. The accessibility of information for consumers leads to their ability to make well-informed choices when shopping. On the other hand, the excessive amount of information online can also have a downside of its own. Research reveals that the level of intense multitasking in digital media is associated with increased distractibility, shortened attention span, and the poor working memory (Uncapher et al., 2017). The immediate satisfaction of online shopping could allow consumers to be more impulsive. Social media can trigger the trend of conspicuous consumption as people feel the urge to keep up with the curated photos and videos shared by their networks. Besides that, there are online marketing practices which can also mislead consumers. It is arguably the most worrying aspect is how it impacts the children and teenagers whose brains are still developing. The review article by Korte (2020) sums up the data showing that too much screen time in children leads to language delays, deteriorated reading skills, and lower cognitive empathy. Teenagers seem to be susceptible to media addiction. Despite the fact that the internet has numerous advantages, it is also changing our minds in a manner we just barely comprehend. Individuals and society at large need to learn how to keep the good of the internet and also minimize the dangers, especially for the young. Digital literacy education that is enhanced and a reasonable restriction of screen time of children could be the key to a better balance. The Internet is here to stay, and hence, learning to use it with a lot of care is a must-have skill for the modern consumers.
