Kayla Mathe BUS350.102 2/5/2023 Case Study 18: Turning the Tide: Transitioning from Volunteers to Paid Staff 1.   Please identify and discuss some factors that should be considered when a nonprofit transitions from a volunteer to a paid staff. I think that if a nonprofit were to transition from a volunteer to a paid staff, they need to consider how it would make them look to the community. This could possibly make the organization face some backlash within the community because they individuals in the community might think that the organization is steering away from their original beliefs. 2.   How should LLC's board of directors determine which jobs become paid positions? Please explain your response. I think the LLC’s board of directors should look at all the positions that are vital to keep the organization running efficiently. This meaning that the board of directors should look at positions such as the volunteer coordinator and other positions similar to this one. This is because these individuals who are manning these positions are vital in keeping the volunteers working and the organization running. 3. The organization currently had no stable source of funding, although the annual budget was sound. What did the board of directors need to do to ensure the level of funding required to cover salaries?
4. Identity and discuss some of the benefits and drawbacks of using a volunteer staff. Are volunteers a renewable resource? Please explain. Some drawbacks of using volunteer staff are that volunteers might only be able to help certain days of the week. This means that week to week they might have a limited volunteers or a surplus of volunteers. If the organization were to have paid employees, these employees could have set schedules. This would make these individuals more reliable than short term volunteers. 5. At the end of the case, some board members were in favor of transitioning to paid staff while others wanted to retain the volunteer model. Based on the information available, which option do you think would be best for LLC? Please justify your response. I believe that the best option for LLC to take is to transition to paid staff (for certain positions, i.e., volunteer coordinator) to ensure that the organization continues to stay running. If they want to keep positions, such as the volunteer coordinator filled, they will need to compensate these individuals because they are doing this position as if it were a full time job. People will eventually get tired of working these long hours without compensation, like Neil did, and the organization is going to have to keep retraining new people. Though they might face some backlash with the community, this is what needs to be done to ensure that the organization continues to run and help the community.
