Case Study 18: Turning the Tide: Transitioning from Volunteers to Paid Staff
1.
Please identify and discuss some factors that should be considered when a nonprofit transitions from a volunteer to a paid staff.
I think that if a nonprofit were to transition from a volunteer to a paid staff, they need to consider how it would make them look to the community. This could possibly make the organization face some backlash within the community because they individuals in the community might think that the organization is steering away from their original beliefs. 2.
How should LLC's board of directors determine which jobs become paid positions? Please explain your response.
I think the LLC’s board of directors should look at all the positions that are vital to keep the organization running efficiently. This meaning that the board of directors should look at positions such as the volunteer coordinator and other positions similar to this one. This is because these individuals who are manning these positions are vital in keeping the volunteers working and the organization running. 3.
The organization currently had no stable source of funding, although the annual budget was sound. What did the board of directors need to do to ensure the level of funding required to cover salaries?
4.
Identity and discuss some of the benefits and drawbacks of using a volunteer staff.
Are volunteers a renewable resource? Please explain.
Some drawbacks of using volunteer staff are that volunteers might only be able to help certain days of the week. This means that week to week they might have a limited volunteers or a surplus of volunteers. If the organization were to have paid employees, these employees could have set schedules. This would make these individuals more reliable than short term volunteers.
5.
At the end of the case, some board members were in favor of transitioning to paid staff while others wanted to retain the volunteer model. Based on the information available, which option do you think would be best for LLC? Please justify your response.
I believe that the best option for LLC to take is to transition to paid staff (for certain positions, i.e., volunteer coordinator) to ensure that the organization continues to stay running. If they want to keep positions, such as the volunteer coordinator filled, they will need to compensate these individuals because they are doing this position as if it were a full time job. People will eventually get tired of working these long hours without compensation, like Neil did, and the organization is going to have to keep retraining new people. Though they might face some backlash with the community, this is what needs to
be done to ensure that the organization continues to run and help the community.

This is your first week in your new job at Safety Zone, a leading producer of IT modeling software. Your prior experience with a smaller competitor gave you an edge in landing the job, and you are excited about joining a larger company in the same field. So far, all is going well and you are getting used to the new routine. However, you are concerned about one issue. In your initial meeting with the IT manager, she seemed very interested in the details of your prior position, and some of her questions made you a little uncomfortable. She did not actually ask you to reveal any proprietary information, but she made it clear that Safety Zone likes to know as much as possible about its competitors. Thinking about it some more, you try to draw a line between information that is OK to discuss, and topics such as software specifics or strategy that should be considered private. This is the first time you have ever been in a situation like this. How will you handle it?

Part 1: Case Analysis
Read the discussion forum below, which shows several employees' posts about how to develop a better performance review system. Then, answer the questions that follow.
Jackson: Hi team, this week we’ll use this forum to discuss our performance review system. Specifically, we want to explore the benefits and drawbacks about the timing of our reviews. Currently, our reviews are conducted annually. The HR team wants to know what we think about quarterly reviews. The HR team wants us to share our views with them by September 10.
Cynthia: I’ve never experienced quarterly reviews before, so it’s hard for me to say if that’s better. My hunch is quarterly reviews would be more fair and helpful. But, I also assume they take a lot of extra time for our managers. @Erin I think your last company held quarterly reviews. What are your experiences with more frequent reviews? Has anyone else worked at a company with more frequent reviews? Tell us what it was like.

One of the most significant management trends during the 1990s not only in the USA but the whole world was organizational downsizing. Since downsizing typically involved shrinking theorganization's workforce, it was a human resource management issue. Can some of you remember VSS? Some employees loved it, some deplored it like it was an epidemic sweepingthe country! Many organizations had done a fairly good job of helping layoff victims by offering a variety of job-help services, psychological counseling, support groups, severance salary, extended healthinsurance benefits and even finding jobs with other companies. This assistance offered revealed that the organization did care about its former employees. What are the key concepts in human resource management and how have they impacted organizational practice and performance?

A CASE TO CONSIDER:
WHO HAS STRESS, ANYWAY?
“I’ll admit that 8:30 on a Saturday morning is a strange time to ask my three oldest friends to come over for coffee and talk,” comments Lindsey Ferrara, “But this is the only time we could get together, and I need help fast!”
Lindsey is a young registered nurse in the intensive care unit of Metropolitan Hospital who has been jarred into reality by a comment her shift supervisor had just made. The comment was something like, “Lindsey, are you feeling okay? I’ve noticed for several days now that your performance just hasn’t been up to standard. What’s the problem?”
Lindsey’s only explanation was that she just hadn’t been feeling well recently. As she drove home from work, she realized that she has been feeling depressed and discontented. For several months, she has sensed this feeling creeping up on her. Maybe she needs to take a vacation and get out of town for a few days. Maybe she should get a physical examination. If she could just sleep…
