Assessment 2 - Facilitating a Discussion
This project requires you to facilitate a discussion
and debate on ideas
with at
least two different audience types
. In doing so, you need to demonstrate that you
can establish a communication framework, develop your ideas for
communication and then debate and discuss those ideas. You are required to communicate your ideas in a persuasive manner to
encourage a response, reaction and critical discussion.
1.
You will need access to a physical audience
which can be your classmates,
colleagues or other group of people made up of family and friends as is
relevant to your specific situation.
2.
You will also need access to an online platform
(e.g. a forum like Reddit,
Twitter, Whirlpool etc.) where you can post a blog or other written
communication to initiate a conversation that will turn into a debate. You
will need the relevant digital tools to participate in the forum such as a
device and online user account. Task 1: Select topic of interest & Plan your key objectives
The first step is to select a topic of interest to you. This could be industry relevant
or of recreational interest to you. It needs to be a lively topic that generates a
range of ideas. It may be one that compares popular brands, new and emerging
technology or approaches, be slightly controversial, or encourage strong opinions
by others. It could be related to IT, politics, education, religion, sports or
something completely different. It may be a topic that helps you raise awareness
about a certain cause. Whatever it is though, it must be something that you are
interested in and that can encourage debate and idea generation by those you
are communicating with.
Task
Description
Provide an overview of
the topic you have
selected. Why have you chosen this
topic?
Social media has become an integral part of modern life,
influencing the way people connect, communicate, and
share information. While it offers numerous benefits, such as
facilitating global connectivity and providing a platform for
self-expression, there is growing concern about its impact on
mental health. The pervasive nature of social media
platforms has raised questions about the potential negative
consequences they may have on individuals' well-being.
I chose this topic because the relationship between social
media and mental health has become a prominent and

critical issue in contemporary society. As social media usage
continues to rise, researchers, mental health professionals,
and the general public have become increasingly interested
in understanding how these platforms may affect individuals'
mental and emotional well-being. The impact of social media
on mental health encompasses a range of factors, including
the potential for social comparison, cyberbullying,
information overload, and the impact on self-esteem and
body image.

audiences? Why?
Key Idea: Social Comparison and Its Impact on Self-Esteem
Social media often prompts individuals to compare their lives with others, as people tend to share positive aspects of their experiences. Constant exposure to curated content can lead to unrealistic standards and a sense of inadequacy. This phenomenon can negatively affect self-esteem and mental well-being.
Social comparison is a pervasive aspect of social media use,
and understanding its impact is crucial in addressing the
potential harm it may cause to individuals' self-perception
and mental health. Highlighting this key idea provides
insights into a common psychological mechanism triggered
by social media, fostering awareness among your audience.
Write a topic statement
and question for use in
your presentation and
debates. Topic Statement:
"The Impact of Social Media on Mental Health: Navigating the
Digital Landscape for Well-Being."
Question for Presentation and Debates:
"How can we strike a balance between the benefits and
potential drawbacks of social media to safeguard and
promote mental health in an increasingly interconnected
digital world?"
Conduct further research
on your topic and key
ideas and include some
statistics to use during
your presentation and
debate. Include the links to your
information sources. Navigating the Social Media Paradox: Risks and Rewards
Social media, with its pervasive influence, operates on a reinforcement mechanism that triggers the brain's reward center through the release of dopamine – the "feel-good chemical" associated with pleasurable activities like sex, food,
and social interaction. However, this enticing reward system has its downsides, contributing to anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments.
