Use the information from the assignment, along with your own research, to answer the questions below
about the 1960s counterculture. Respond to each question in complete sentences. This part of the
assignment is worth 30 points.
1. What were two ways in which members of the counterculture challenged traditional U.S. values in the
1960s? (2 points)
During the 1960s, members of the counterculture challenged traditional U.S. values by opposing
the Vietnam War and by showing off different ways of living/cultural values.
2. Identify one positive and one negative aspect of the counterculture's focus on challenging traditional
values. (4 points)
One positive aspect of the counterculture's focus on challenging traditional values was that it
paved the way for social progress and civil rights, which ended up creating equality in women’s rights and
racial segregation.
One negative aspect of the counterculture's focus on challenging traditional values was that it
could have broken the society at the time even more, creating massive divides between people and
possibly creating fights/riots.
3. Identify two major features of counterculture art. (4 points)
Two major features of counterculture art were experimentation with untraditional art techniques
and self-expression. Graffiti art/street art is a good example of experimenting with untraditional art
techniques.
4. How did counterculture art reflect an artist's cultural beliefs? Give at least one example. (4 points)
A piece of counterculture art would reflect an artist's cultural beliefs with the aspect of
self-expression and breaking social norms. For example, these artists use lots of colors with foreign art
styles. This could mean that they are trying to get out of mainstream society and have a different view of
the world. The picture below combines a black and white picture with a colorful text box saying “Where
Am I Going.”
5. Respond to the following questions about the counterculture of the 1960s.
a. What was one aspect of U.S. culture that members of the counterculture criticized? Why did they object
to it? (2 points)
One aspect of U.S. culture that members of the counterculture criticized was consumerism. They
did not like the emphasis on material possessions and the idea that happiness was achieved by the
constant need for an outside object. They believed that consumerism led to everybody becoming the same
person. They also saw it as a distraction from the bigger picture in life, and not prioritizing money over
well-being. Instead, they wanted to live a simpler life that focused on happiness and exploring one's mind.
b. What was one change to U.S. culture that members of the counterculture hoped to achieve? (2 points)
One change to U.S. culture that members of the counterculture hoped to achieve was social
equality and justice for all citizens.
