Consider the following potential energy profile for the A → B reaction. How many intermediates are formed?
SHOW WORK BY DRAWING ARROWS TO INTERMEDIATES
Potential energy profile is the theoretical representation of the single energetic pathway in which the reactants are transformed into products. Potential energy is plotted against reaction coordinate and the pathway of the reaction is determined.
Potential energy profiles clearly demonstrate how a reactant is being transformed into the product. Here in this question A transforms into B, crossing several energy barriers, which is the region with higher energies in the profile. These are called transition states. The lower energy regions in between two transition states corresponds to the intermediate state. Therefore the reaction passes through three intermediate states in this reaction which are shown by the arrows in the following figure.
