Expert Solution
Step 1

The mechanism of the given reaction involves ten steps. The first step is nucleophilic attack of H- on the carbonyl group to cleave the pi, and thereby forming the alkoxide tetrahedral intermediate. This step results a new C-H bond. The second step is reformation of the pi bond to afford the ring opening that forms another alkoxide ion. The third step is protonation of alkoxide by H2O to form first alcohol. The fourth step is nucleophilic attack of H- on the carbonyl group of CHO to cleave the pi bond, and thereby forming the alkoxide ion. This step results a new C-H bond. The fifth step is protonation of alkoxide by H2O to form second alcohol.
