RISK FACTOR IDENTIFICATION

Exercise produces powerful benefits that may reduce the risk many diseases and conditions, however, it also carries risks. Exercise increases demands on the heart and the sympathetic nervous activity, factors that could trigger a heart attack in people who already have coronary heart disease. Many people with undiagnosed heart disease are at particular risk for serious problems. Screening participants and clients interested in beginning an activity program is critical to ensure safety. Before recommending physical activity, potential program participants should be evaluated to classify risk level and to determine if it is safe to proceed. Having participants complete a health history and health screening that documents risk factors allows health professionals to identify potential risks that may be associated with increased exercise and determine if participants should be able to safely proceed in their desired program or if they should receive physician clearance before beginning the program or class.

For this Assignment you will first IDENTIFY and LABEL the modifiable and the non-modifiable risk factors for heart disease along with threshold criteria (normal value limits). Next, for each of the two cases provided, you will complete a risk factor analysis, interpretation, and determination of risk level. Then, you will provide your recommendation regarding admission to an exercise program along with the rationale for your decision based on guidelines and thresholds presented along with a summary statement for the participant. Finally, you will provide an overall concluding paragraph.
