Question

Describe and explain in detail the effects of glutamate when it binds to postsynaptic AMPA receptors vs the effect of it when it binds to NMDA receptors.

Expert Solution
Step 1
  • glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, it primarily interacts with both metabotropic and ionotropic receptors to activate and regulate postsynaptic responses.
  • Both AMPA and NMDA receptors are fundamental mediators of synaptic plasticity, the ability of synapses to strengthen or weaken, where dysregulation of those receptors leads to neurodegeneration in a variety of disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Glutamate is an amino acid that is produced in the body and also occurs naturally in many foods
  • Glutamate is a neurotransmitter that sends signals in the brain and throughout the nerves in the body. Glutamate plays an important role during brain development. Normal levels of glutamate also help with learning and memory.
  • Several types of ionotropic glutamate receptors have been identified. Three of these are Ligand gated ion channels called NMDA receptors, AMPA receptors, and kainate receptors
  • All of the ionotropic glutamate receptors are nonselective cation channels, allowing the passage of Na+ and K+, and in some cases small amounts of Ca2+
  • These glutamate receptors are responsible for the fast, immediate postsynaptic response to glutamate release
