Question

Explain polarizability ?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Polarization of ions: In the formation of an ionic molecule, when two oppositely charged ions that is cation and anion of the ionic molecule come closer to each other, the cation attracts the electrons charge cloud of the outermost shell of the anion towards itself and hence, the symmetrical shape of the anion gets distorted or polarized.

The phenomenon in which the symmetrical shape of the anion gets distorted by the approach of the cation to it is called polarization of anion.

For example: The distortion of iodide ion (anion) by lithium ion (cation) in lithium iodide ionic crystal.
