Case Study 1 Deliverable 2 on The Euro: its challenges and threats
This part of the case study should include a description of the current situation and its impact on the Euro.
Step by step
Solved in 3 steps
- Scenario 4 Sharon Gillespie, a new buyer at Visionex, Inc., was reviewing quotations for a tooling contract submitted by four suppliers. She was evaluating the quotes based on price, target quality levels, and delivery lead time promises. As she was working, her manager, Dave Cox, entered her office. He asked how everything was progressing and if she needed any help. She mentioned she was reviewing quotations from suppliers for a tooling contract. Dave asked who the interested suppliers were and if she had made a decision. Sharon indicated that one supplier, Apex, appeared to fit exactly the requirements Visionex had specified in the proposal. Dave told her to keep up the good work. Later that day Dave again visited Sharons office. He stated that he had done some research on the suppliers and felt that another supplier, Micron, appeared to have the best track record with Visionex. He pointed out that Sharons first choice was a new supplier to Visionex and there was some risk involved with that choice. Dave indicated that it would please him greatly if she selected Micron for the contract. The next day Sharon was having lunch with another buyer, Mark Smith. She mentioned the conversation with Dave and said she honestly felt that Apex was the best choice. When Mark asked Sharon who Dave preferred, she answered, Micron. At that point Mark rolled his eyes and shook his head. Sharon asked what the body language was all about. Mark replied, Look, I know youre new but you should know this. I heard last week that Daves brother-in-law is a new part owner of Micron. I was wondering how soon it would be before he started steering business to that company. He is not the straightest character. Sharon was shocked. After a few moments, she announced that her original choice was still the best selection. At that point Mark reminded Sharon that she was replacing a terminated buyer who did not go along with one of Daves previous preferred suppliers. What should Sharon do in this situation?Scenario 4 Sharon Gillespie, a new buyer at Visionex, Inc., was reviewing quotations for a tooling contract submitted by four suppliers. What does the Institute of Supply Management code of ethics say about financial conflicts of interest? In order to prevent the Ebola virus and the MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus) from entering the Philippines, airports and other entry points all over the country have been provided with digital thermo scanners to detect feverish persons coming in from countries affected by the two viruses. However, there is no guarantee that the country would be virus-free for a long time despite the state-of-the-art equipment that the authorities have been using. What do you think are the opportunities presented by this threatening situation?
- The investment required to bring South Africa’s rail network back to its design specification was “huge” according to head of Transnet Portia Derby. She also mentioned that Transnet needed to re-establish or upgrade its track signalling and substations, among other items. All inclusive, track upgrading came with a price tag of almost R100-billion that needed to be spent over the next seven years. She noted, however, that cable theft was a significant challenge, not only for Transnet, but also for Eskom, Telkom and municipalities. In addition, Derby noted that Transnet recently started working with the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa to deal with the issue of cable theft. Meanwhile, Derby noted that, in South Africa, using rail for cargo transportation has fallen to about 3% of total cargo movements in the country. “I imagine that the same disastrous situation has also arisen in [the rest of the] SADC [region],” She pointed out, however, that rail gauge was not a big concern,…Case study below: Shoprite nets $10 million from sale of Uganda, Madagascar and Nigeria unitsSouth Africa’s Shoprite Holdings Ltd posted $10.27 million gain from the sale of its assets in Uganda, Madagascar and Nigeria as Africa’s largest fast-moving consumer goods retailer retreated from markets it has considered under-performing on the continent. The retailer, which is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and cross-listed on the Namibian and Zambian Stock exchanges, revealed through its financial statements for the 53 weeks ended July 4 that its operations in Uganda and Madagascar which it had classified as “assets held for sale” yielded a combined net gain of $8.85 million, but declined to disclose the value for each transaction. On the other hand, the sale of the Nigerian subsidiary, which was completed in May 23 realised a net gain of $1.41 million after the business was sold at $35.89 million of which $29.81 million of the amount has already been received. The retailer…5 Prepare the EFE matrix by evaluating a company you know in any sector (There will be at least 4 opportunities and 4 threats)
- Read the short case incident below and answer the question at the end of the case study. Dronexx electronics developed a revolutionary method of drone fast food delivery that could pick up orders from a fast-food location and keep the warm food warm and the cold food cold until delivery at a specified GPS address up to 8 Km away depending on the size of the order. The head of research and development Guy Jiang estimated that Dronexx electronics could become a supplier to every fast-food chain in the world. The future success of the company seemed to hang on securing the broadest possible patents to cover the still secret technology. The Human Resources director, Jackson Huang recommended that Jiang become a project leader in charge of developing and filing the necessary patent information. Jiang and Huang developed a list of specialists who would be needed to rush the patent applications 3 through the final stages of development and the patent application process. Combined benefitScenario 3: A problem with paper You are a franchisee for Fatto’s Burger Palace in a small college town (“where friends meet to eat”). The specialties of the house are the “Giant Burger Supreme” and the “Hound Doggie,” both of which contain 26% or less fat. Business is good, especially when the college dietician decides to put soy stew on the menu in the dining halls. Recently, agitation by environmental extremists has forced the restaurant to abandon the convenient clam shell boxes of polystyrene in favor of paper boxes. The latter are a little more expensive, but take up less space. They are somewhat difficult and time-consuming to fold. Customers are now complaining about the oil stains on the inside of the burger box. Water tends to seep through and make the package limp in some cases. This has required putting more napkins in each order. In addition, the blazing red Fatto’s symbol on the top of the boxes now has fuzzy edges, whereas it was sharp and crisp on the clam shell boxes.…
