In Life of Pi, written by Yann Martel, a young boy named Pi decides to differ from the religious path he is intended for. Instead he decides to embrace three religions even though he is ridiculed by his parents and religious leaders. The three religions he decides to put his faith in are Christianity, Hindu, and Islam. When his family decides to board a ship to Canada, the trip seems to be going well until the storm. The ship sinks leaving Pi as the only survivor, or so he thinks. He realizes he is on a lifeboat with an injured zebra until he helps a Royal Bengal tiger, Richard Parker, on board, a decision he quickly regrets. There is also a hyena and an orangutan named Orange Juice. This book tells the journey, the Life of Pi. Throughout the story there are simple things that mean more. They hide in the pages as words when they really are busting at the seams with a deeper meaning. There are multiple themes in the story such as the will to survive and religion is important. Life of Pi uses symbolism through Richard Parker, the algae island, and the color orange. Richard Parker seems to be just a tiger on board a lifeboat. …show more content…
It was the color of many important things to Pi. Pi “noticed an orange whistle dangling from the life jacket” (105). The whistle was one of the most important things to Pi. He used the whistle to train Richard Parker, who was also orange. If Pi was not able to train Richard Parker, he would die. Luckily, he did train Richard Parker which was key to survival. The tarpaulin was also orange. “The bright orange tarpaulin was held down by a strong nylon rope…” (106). The tarpaulin helped separate territories on the lifeboat. It also was safety for Richard Parker. Orange Juice was orange as well. She was like a motherly figure for Pi. She was calm and reserved unlike the other animals. Pi liked that about her. The color orange goes with the theme that survival is key, but it also ties in with
3. The colour orange appears many times in the novel "Life of Pi", as do the colours red and yellow, which together create orange. The colour red as an archetype symbolizes great passion, blood and sacrifice. The colour yellow symbolizes hope and happiness. Orange is a combination of these two archetypes. On page 153 in "Life of Pi", Pi remarks, "It seems orange---such a nice Hindu colour---is the colour of survival." Survival could be viewed as passion, sacrifice and hope all combined together.
Yellow and orange seemed like the odd ones out to me. I tend to think of happiness and lemons when I see yellow, but it represents power and glory. In some cases, it also symbolizes the sun and joy of life. Orange is a hard color for me to pin down because I automatically think of the fruit and I start to smell citrus. But it represents humility, piety, and devotion. You learn something new every day,
Orange is vibrant and illuminating. It conceals every color with either the neon form or the sunset. The black and white symbolize the darkness and the light. One of my many life mottos is that “you always need darkness to receive the light.”
Religion can grant you a great amount of things, like belief, trust, and faith, but it can also give you the gift of hope. In the book, Life of Pi, by Yann Martel, an Indonesian boy, named Pi, is shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean. Pi survived 227 days at sea because his faith in multiple religions instilled him with a sense a hope to survive. As a boy, Pi was raised to be a Buddhist and lived in a Buddhist family.
In The Life of Pi by Yann Martel, Martel shows that Richard parker represents Pi’s Id state of mind. Pi invents Richard Parker and other animals to represent the wild primal side of his story that he wants to suppress. In the book the first encounter with Richard Parker represents his struggle to survive himself . When the ship sinks Pi says “From the lifeboat I saw [Richard Parker] in the water” (97).
Orange combines the energy of red and the happiness of yellow. It is associated with joy, sunshine, and the tropics. In the story this could be used in the same way as yellow is the sense that they are happy.
In the beginning of the story, Pi as a young boy had several battles he fought over. He spoke first of how he was bullied over his name, Piscine. He endured this torture for quite a while until Pi used his ingenuity, and showed everyone how smart he was at changing his name to just Pi, using its relevance in every major subject. Understanding a single religion clashed with his belief system, so in addition to Hindu, he studied Catholicism and Islam. Leaving India and moving to Canada was a real struggle for Pi. He had to give up his sense of belonging within his community and
In the novel, we as readers find that Pi is apart of three religions – Catholicsm, Hinduism and Islam. The role of religion is important and essential for Pi to survive on the boat. Even though sometimes his physical needs subjugate his religious needs, he never doubts his belief in God. Pi's survival and a big reason of why he was able to endure the 227 days on the boat was through his religious beliefs. For example:
In part one of Life of Pi a symbol that is significant is the colour orange. The meaning of the colour orange is hope and survival. At the end of part one in the book, the writer describes seeing Pi’s daughter holding an orange cat. From this, we can conclude that Pi will survive the shipwreck and have a family of his own. The orange cat is a somewhat reflection of the big orange cat, Richard Parker, who helps Pi stay sane during the 227 days at sea. When the ship was sinking, the Taiwanese crewmen through Pi into a lifeboat and gave him an orange whistle. Pi also is accompanied by an orangutan named orange juice, which reminds him of his mother. Pi is comforted and has hope for survival when the monkey is on the lifeboat; thus, the colour
Orange: A clear representation of modish style appeal and free-spirited souls, orange is not very common in the assortments except for some categories. It adds a splash of spunk to your intimate clothing.
We all have that person in our lives; the person who always seems to be moving, the person who always seems to break the rules, the person who always seems to be doing everything at once. Chances are that that person has the personality traits that match them to the color orange. The color orange is used in many different ways through literature, art, or even cinema. In the bible, the color orange symbolizes deliverance, passionate praise or even the fire of god. I myself tested as an orange when taking a personality test to see what color I would match to. I was surprised to find that people view oranges as thriving on competition, being a natural performer
The major theme in Life of Pi is the will to live. This theme is front and center through most of the book. Pi and the animals in the lifeboat fight for their survival from the very beginning of being shipwrecked at sea. Through this theme, Martel shows that both humans and animals will go to extremes in order to survive, sometimes altering their very nature. Pi acknowledges this change in him, by stating, “I descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible” (Martel 197). Pi is forced to desert his beliefs so that he can survive. He resorts to eating fish and turtles even though he is a vegetarian and he takes life in order to eat by killing the fish and turtles himself. Pi held these beliefs strong until his survival was at stake.
To begin, orange is unique in many way that you may not have thought of. Unique is being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else. Firstly, were you aware that after chocolate and vanilla, orange is the world’s favorite flavor? You have to be something special to be in league with the “big boys”. For the most part, the more orange the peel is the more mature and sweet the fruit will be. Either way an orange is an orange, the taste is relatively delicious across the board. Forthwith, many may say oranges are of the very few fruits that have a bittersweet citrus taste. To the glory of bumpy, small thin packets filled with sunshine, that is an orange. Secondly, the word orange has absolutely no perfect rhymes. To clarify, the English
The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes. The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea. When they finally reach the coast of Mexico, Richard Parker flees to the jungle, never to be seen again. The Japanese authorities that interrogate Pi refuse to believe his
Although Orange Juice is just a weak animal that never haunt any animal and just love to eat fruits, however, her courage overpowers her ability. As Pi monologue, “an adult female orang utan cannot defeat an adult male spotted hyena… What does fruit eater know about killing? Where would it learn where to bite, how hard, for how long?” (Martel 130). This is something amazeing as the orang utan is very brave to face the hyena. One of the reasons why Pi called the female orang utan as Orange Juice is because the orange animals do represent the courage in an animal. On top of that, Richard Parker the Bengal tiger also represent courage in an orange animal as he is being scared by the hyena. “The flame-colored carnivore emerged from beneath the tarpaulin and made for the hyena. The hyena was leaning against the stern bench, behind the zebra’s carcass, transfixed. It did not pull a fight. Instead it shrank to the floor, lifting a forepaw in a futile gesture of defense,” shows that the hyena was afraid of the orange Bengal tiger that look fierce on him (Martel 150). This is how the Bengal tiger stay to survive in the lifeboat on the spooky ocean. Therefore, it is true that orange is the color of courage; and this can spread up the spirit of survival to promote the important of life.
