The American culture is define to everyone in their own way. Everyone grows up differently in a particular community that shares the same languages, values, rules, and customs. The American Culture on that is consider to be a “melting pot”, because of all the different cultures that reside inside of it making it so diverse. Race in this country has never been a great topic throughout history. African Americans play a huge role into defining what our culture is as a whole, as well as being a part of racism for the past 250 years.

As Americans, we are privileged with diverse experiences. With this comes a perceived understanding of many cultures and their influences but in fact full cultural literacy is impossible to achieve.

To many people, America’s history may appear to be a series of events shaped by the decisions and actions of white men. However, this perspective fails to recognize the tremendous impacts that minority groups had, have, and will have in shaping and influencing America’s past, present, and future. The Revolutionary War is an example of how women and African Americans played an important role in critical events in American history. In the Revolutionary War, Americans fought for freedom and independence from Britain, leading to the birth of our nation. Without the contributions of women and African Americans, the Revolutionary War may not have been successful, and American history may have followed a very different course.

Africa is the second largest continent in the world that was shaped 550 million years ago. Houses 800 million people that speak more than one-thousand languages and regional dialects. I was amazed that the native people of this region could speak many different languages. Africa is known for its vegetation, rainfall, mineral resources, and topography. The vast majority of its geography is grassland and woodlands that support the migration of animals and livestock. There must be warm weather and rainfall, which is heavily relied upon for vegetation. The largest river that flows upward, but has a span that runs from the top of Africa to the bottom is called the Nile River. Africa is mostly recognized for its enormous enriched deposits of mineral resources. Learning about the importance of Africa is truly exceptional. Whenever someone thinks about Africa the first thought is, this is where blacks come from. People don’t talk about how wealthy Africa is nor do they shed positive light on this region. This continent is thought to be poor and a developing country, but this the ideal place for humankind to emerge. Although, I was unaware of the mitochondrial DNA tree study I was mind-blown. The African American slave influence in the beginnings of American culture and technology and Native Americans of the North American Continent were significant in creating America. By revealing the different ways this achieved, we can see the work and techniques that drove the new country and how this created by the political, as well as ideological ramifications of their labors. With all of these contributions to the new country of the United States, we see that the formation of the world power built on the principles that the early settlers created in their work.

Does the unlearned history of the Black/ Africa-American community affect our position in society? If this unlearned history of the Black/African-American community was common knowledge would the world be different today?

Despite numerous misconceptions, African Americans who have attended HBCUs have thrived tremendously. In fact, African American students that attend an HBCU are more likely to go on to graduate from a professional school than African American graduates from other institutional types. Brandon Busteed, an executive director who organized a survey about the matter under Gallup-Purdue University stated, “There are still noticeable challenges around completion rates and loan default rates, and this data doesn’t change that…but this data does add a whole new dimension to the conversation about the value of HBCUs. Black students are having very meaningful experiences at HBCUs, compared to black graduates from everywhere else.” (Busteed) Here we can assume what Busteed analyzed from the survey was that despite the fact that HBCUs seem to have challenges, for instance one that wasn’t mention regarding how PWIs receive a substation amount of funding as compared to HBCUs. In the face of all this the black students that do attend HBCUs are still confident and graduate quite successful. Moreover, approximately 33% of African American students receiving their PhDs

On August 19, 1995 I was immersed in this world of many things. Many faces, many cultures, and many religions. I was brought into a family of five faces and to some one culture, but to me two cultures. I come from two Nigerian parents who were both born and raised in Nigeria. They met in school and they later got married and had two sons there. My father received an invitation to go and study at a university in either Canada or Australia and he chose to go to Canada. This, however, meant that he had to leave his family back in Nigeria for the time being in order to pursue his Ph.D. in psychology. Improving yourself is a great thing you could do, but what if you improved your whole community? African Americans have been together for numerous centuries, especially in the 19th century. Joined together, they have created things they never thought they could ever achieve. They improved themselves through communication, different preaching ways, and believing. African Americans had started to believe in God as a way of hope for them through the harsh times of slavery. Later, when they started to gain a higher voice, black leaders took a stand to speak out against slavery. Their Church is one of the things they could look forward to going to every time they were in a bad state of mind. They could go there to preach together as a community. The churches made by African Americans had joined them together to make something more than they ever thought they could achieve.

As an young African American in Seattle, Naturally I grew up in the African American Community, specifically in the Central District ( C.D). That Includes the very coveted territory of Capital Hill. Growing the C.D area was not what it is today, in fact it was very far from it. Even though there was, and is still violence, it was a community, and an up lifting on at that. Everyone would hang out at the community center, and for the most part everyone new everyone. At a young age I learned the meaning of community and family. Family is not always blood, and blood is not always thicker than water. I was once able to walk down the streets of where I grew up and recognize everything and almost everyone. In the late 1850’s, African Americans and Irish Americans escaping the potato famine in the home country started to immigrate in the region mostly offering home services. The access of the new culture into the community at first did not have any large impact on the dominant Italian culture. However, over the years, elements of multiculturalism are obvious in the small African American, Asian American and Latin American neighborhoods witnessed during this research. These new communities were to some extent amazed by the Italian culture and no significant efforts to change the unique identity. T

Africa’s rich history and unique geographic features make this continent vastly different from the six others on this planet. Being the only continent with a majority of its landmass lying in the tropics, it’s inhabitants adapted to their situation accordingly. Unlike Europe, who adopted industry, Africans developed in small, isolated tribes due to the rugged geography, which led to problems with government and poverty when Europeans tried to implement their ways on native people. The extremely diverse geographic features of Africa, including its deserts, mountains, valleys and rainforests obstructed movement from place to place, making it much easier for people to live in smaller groups. These tribes all had their own unique languages and

African Americans did not come to the Americas as immigrants, they did not collectively decide that they wanted a better life than the one they had in Africa by coming to be someone’s property. No African people were forced to the Americas with nothing but the clothes on their backs ripped away from their families,culture, and their traditions to go to a foreign land surrounded by people who did not speak their language. They had no way to communicate with anyone not even fellow Africans as different dialects and languages are shared all over West Africa. Yet somehow these strong human beings found a way to survive and while they were stripped of everything they owned there was something their captors could not take from them and that was their culture.

African Americans have for so long been regulated to a narrow perception of their history and culture as hypersexual and savage. Their promiscuity has long been used as a way of justification for: rape, enslavement, disease, poverty, and teen pregnancy. Comparisons made between African Americans and animals particularly monkeys or bucks further perpetuated the sexualized image of these people. To understand how this stereotype is perpetuated we must analyze our institutions, history, and culture.

There are difficulties in the study of this topic. The first one is the view of the historiography. Many economist and historians have considered Africa to be underdeveloped even before the colonialism period, which recent studies have proved to be wrong. Africa had a well-developed economic system, where the monetization of the economy had created a class society . There needs to be more investigation about this topic, which hopefully will bring some light to this interesting period in time. Secondly, the lack of primary sources is another obstacle to the study of this topic, many of the ones available are biased because they are from a European perspective. However, it is possible to find other material in archaeology, documents and oral stories. Thirdly, the continent of Africa is huge, and in its study, we should try to avoid generalizations, because it erases the particularities of each territory. Therefore, as said, we are going to focus on West and Central Africa, so the study will be more focused and specific.
