Let us go back to Renée Richards, why was Richards able to play in a woman’s sport after going through surgery and becoming a woman? The answer lies in the process, Richards went through surgery which included hormone treatment. Zack Ford, a writer for Thinkprogress.org published a piece on August 8, 2016, entitled, No, Allowing Transgender Athletes to Compete Won’t Destroy Women’s Sports. Ford makes some very compelling arguments and points out that many different organizations already allow transgender athletes to compete and they have not had any problems. This seems like a fair claim, then, by Ford. Furthermore, it seems fair to say that the science of hormones is also on Ford’s side and against those who oppose transgender individuals in women’s sports. However, “The Olympics are reportedly opening the field of competition to transgender athletes by adopting an updated policy that reflects standards already adopted by other regulatory sports organizations.”9 That was written by Christina Kahrl, an ESPN staff writer in an article that she wrote entitled, IOC opening field of competition to trans athletes with new policy. Kahrl states that these new criteria allow for “broader policies for the inclusion of transgender athletes.”10 The main issue with the new criteria is that it would allow either male-to-female or female-to-male transgender athletes to chose in which competition they would like to compete without having surgery.
