Winnipogo is the Lake Monster of Lake Winnipegosis in Manitoba, Canada. The first sighting of the creature dates back to 1909, when a report of a “huge creature traveling at a speed of about two miles per hour,” was made by Valintine Mackay. Sightings since have described the creature has being over twenty feet long and serpent-like in appearance. One sighting, in 1935, even reported the creature had a horn on its head. In the 1930s, a strange bone was found on the shore of the lake by Oscar Frederickson. The bone was believed to be a spinal vertebra. Sadly, the original bone was lost in a fire, but a wooden copy was made. The bone was showed to Dr. James McLeod of the University of Manitoba, who felt it resembled a vertebra. However, he felt it was the vertebra of a whale-like creature that had been extinct for over four million years. …show more content…

I have never really visited Bear Lake a whole lot, but when I did go there it was to visit friends and fish I think. From what I know, I believe that the stories about the monster in the lake came around in the 1800’s when the pioneers were over there trying to get things built. The settlers who were there during that time, claimed that the lake monster was capable of eating cattle, and had reported that a few of their cattle had been eaten by the monster when the cattle were being sent down to the lake to get water. However, I don’t think that there were any reports of people being eaten by it, so it must have only preferred the cows that came down to water, and figured that they were easy to
This summer one scientific thing I did was use a water mat on Lake Winnipesaukee. A water mat is a giant raft that floats on the surface of the water. It's constructed from the same styrofoam type material that a pool noodle is made out of. It is extremely versatile and can be used in many different ways. The way that I enjoyed using it the most was to jump from our pontoon boat onto the mat. I would make my way to the edge of the boat, steady myself, and leap, landing directly on top of the green float. The impact of the jump made my feet feel sore for a few seconds. When I was ready, I would hurdle myself off the mat and climb back onto the boat. While this activity does require a lot of skill, it requires a lot of science as well.

The Wabigoon – English River in Ontario has been contaminated with mercury for about 40 years now and the government has not approached this issue that affects most of the people of Grassy Narrows First Nation. A majority of the community has mercury poisoning, which could be fatal. Additionally, residents are forced to continue to consume contaminated food. In the 1970s, the government let the river to naturally recover itself and said that it would be better than any attempts to clean it, however, it has only gotten worse. Now, the government says that they do not want to attempt to clean the water until they are completely sure that it will not make the situation worse. Recently, scientists have suggested several solutions that have been successful in the past, but it is still unknown as to when the government will clean the water.

However, over recent years, it appears that the monster’s legend isn’t heard of as much anymore, with very few people still knowing the full folklore stories about the monster. A second important pattern is that several informants stated that the first sightings of the monster originated during the time of the Shoshone Indians who lived near the lake, and had believed that the monster would often time capture or attack Indians who swam or went near the lake. Another pattern found in the items is that the Bear Lake Monster has stayed around since the early white settlers came to the region and that they had also claimed sightings of seeing a monster swimming in the lake. In addition, many of these settlers were able to report it to others who also visited the area and would continue to search for the monster both in the lake and near the shoreline. These are crucial patterns in that not only are the stories not as well known anymore amongst individuals outside of the Bear Lake area. According to informants, origins of the stories originally began before Bear Lake Valley had developed, and that when white settlers came they were able to help spread tales of the monster as well as expand the stories and folklore through
The importance of the research being done based on this find is explained within this same article in a quote from Chris Stringer of the Natural History Museum, London saying, “A find like this does make us question the trees people have built up of human evolution”(Noble, 2002). Not only is finding this skull phenomenal, but the implications it holds are tremendous. The idea that one fossil such as this can change the way we have thought about human evolution is a huge deal that deserves much research and even much speculation and dispute.
CT sweeps and 3-D projections of the rib with the shot in it demonstrate that the bone section is, truth be told, a lance point. For Waters, Manis wasn't a disengaged practice in investigating overlooked locales. As a for example, he and his previous graduate understudy, Jesse Halligan, now at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse, have as of late re-unearthed Page-Ladson, a sinkhole on the Florida beg that a large number of years prior would have been above ocean level. There, in the 1990s, archeologists found that antiquated individuals likely executed a mastadon in the sinkhole. They found a few pieces from stone apparatuses and a mastodon tusk with cut blemishes on it. Dating adjacent seeds returned times of around 14,400 years of age. However, as with the Manis discover, associates chose not to see to the outcomes. The previous summer, in any case, Halligan found a vast piece of a biface in an indistinguishable layer from the past finds. Radiocarbon dates on twigs and seeds found around it could affirm the prior work at the site. "My reasoning is you can reinvestigate these locales that have guarantee and check whether they work out," Waters says. "Once in awhile you win, here and there you
Lake Tonetta is polluted! Help us close it down before it’s too late! That's what the concern citizens think. However, I can prove otherwise. We think Lake Tonetta is healthy. So we conducted multiple experiments to prove our hypothesis is correct such as pH.
Just a few miles away, our Great Lakes are being ravaged by plastic particles being released throughout. Issues around the world regarding water have always been prevalent. Dehydration kills about 2.2 million children every year. We can not stand idle by as a possible solution degrades daily right next to us. Lake Erie is known as the most polluted of the Great Lakes however, Lake Michigan is close behind. Due to the boom in industry in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas during the Industrial Revolution, and the disregard of the environmental impact, Michigan has already absorbed a large amount of pollutants. Only one percent of the water in the Great Lakes leave the
