There are so many students who say they are hardworking and can handle the pressure from a solid college workload. However too many times these students fall behind in their studies and though they probably don’t mean to end up just trying to “survive” their classes. This is exactly what professors fear though they have no reason to with me. I always put my best foot forward and have had more than enough experience winning the fight against stress. When you look for students to hire I am sure you are looking for ambitious individuals with a knack for learning. If so then you don’t need to look any further considering I am both of those things. However I am not overconfident when it comes to learning considering I don’t know everything. I
Here at Greenbrier High School, we have over 1500 students. Out of those 1500, many of us are in challenging and rigorous classes while also participating in extracurricular activities. Many are able to have outstanding grades, while also being active in their school and community. The stressful situations we experience, or adversity, heightens our ability to do well under stress and continue to stay determined. Personally, when I have a large amount of homework or am under a great deal of stress it makes me more determined on performing my best. Without the pressure from my classes, I may not have been able to maintain my high average. From my experiences with adversity, it proves to have a beneficial effect on the way I handle demanding
6. When deciding to hire someone, Danny asks his managers to answer one question “do you believe the candidate has the capacity to become one of the top three performers on the team in their job area”. He talks about a “whelming” candidate, being a candidate you avoid at all cost. What is it? What is your opinion of the statement? What is your opinion of the “whelming” candidate? Why?
Another reason why students are not successful in college is that of stress. Relationships, family issues and cost of tuition are stress-related factors that are dealt with a college student. The America Institute of the street website says, “a 2008 mental health study by the Associated Press and mtvU eight in 10 college students say they have experienced stress in their daily lives over the past three months” (Stress in College Students p. 1). The college that I
A majority of people these days are planning or are going to college. These people have many reasons for going to college. The option of going to college is a major decision and there are many factors that are considered in making this decision. One of the many reasons of making the decision to go to college is to receive a bigger salary. Another reason is for the opportunities that become available from going to college. People also decide go to college to be better prepared and successful in the future.
College pressures dominate our lives. They begin to levitate around us and slowly derail our lives. William Zinsser elaborates about the college pressures that modern generations are facing. He reveals multiple commonalities that the typical college student encounters on a daily basis. Zinsser states, “They want a map-right now-that they can follow unswervingly to career security, financial security, social security, and presumably, a prepaid grave” (12). He is spot on, the pressures demand my attention and won’t take no for an answer. So far I’ve gone head to head with these pressures every day since I started my freshman year in college. For the time that I’ve been here, my mind is overwhelmed and distraught with the amount of stress that gets piled on top of me every single day. I drown in these unrealistic expectations written in those faulty suggestion bars about how to be successful in college and college 101 tips. College pressures surround me like a dull gray cloud. It showers me with expectations and unfinished checklists. College itself is similar to carpooling to hell and back, but with no actual guarantee with a ride back.
Many people think college is a carefree place, full of fun and games for students. In reality ,the majority of students are bogged down in school work rushing to meet their deadlines for homework assignments projects, and even cramming study time for exams and quizzes. On top of that , college can be pretty costly. Therefore, this is normally a highly stressful period for most people in their lives. In the essay “College Pressures”, the author William Zinsser mentions how students go through so much stress and pressure from different aspects of college. He discusses the pressures that college students faced in the late 1970’s that are still happening now in today's society . Zinsser focuses on four main pressures that students face as they enter the college realm, which includes economic, parental, peer, and self-induced pressures. It's not only the pressure but In the essay “College Is a Waste of Time and Money” by Caroline Bird , the author attempts to persuade her readers that colleges are overflowing with students who don't belong there and that college education is a useless endeavor that is often forced on students. Between the money it costs, the time it takes, and all the pressures from the different aspects of college it can be pretty overwhelming to think about. The question is how could we reduces the struggle and tension that college brings upon students.
With the increasing trend of students attending college after high school, the number of college students are increasing rapidly as well as expectations to do well in every aspect of it. In the article by Amy Yao “Never Let Them See You Sweat: The Myth of Effortless Perfection”, she describes how students are being put more and more pressure to be “perfect” in all aspects that are important in college, especially females. Her claims and use of quotes bring about a perspective of how students may be overworked by the many complicated aspects that go into being a successful student, but it can be looked at with a new perspective of stress builds character.
The essay, by William Zinsser explains how most college students are unable to succed from being so stressed from their grades. The essay begins with notes from students asking advice from the dean of Branford
Leaving High School, I thought I was prepared to go into college. I knew how difficult college was going to be. So i told myself I would do my homework the day it was assigned, I would go to the tutors if i needed help, and I would study more to succeed. But one thing I did not prepare myself for was, how to overcome stress and anxiety. According to an article, “Stress in College: Experts Provide Tips to Cope” by Megan Reed, “…30% of students reported that stress had negatively affected their academic performance within the past year, and over 85% had felt overwhelmed by everything they had to do at some point within the past year.”(National Health Assessment) This report really captivated me because 30%
In “High School Students are Stressed Out About College Admissions; The Reality of Burning Out Before College,” Olsen (2015) discusses about how on-coming college students experience stress prior to college, and the means to be the best at everything so that colleges accept
Top performance is achieved with moderate stress at intermittent times, which grows new brain cells that better memory (Bradberry). Stress is usually thought of as damaging, but a certain amount of stress is needed to caution students that they have work to do and deadlines to meet. Having a healthy amount of stress motivates people to remind them to be working. Without enough stress, students will lose inclination to school work, and with too much stress, students can, and sometimes do, have a breakdown. The threat of a collapse means students need to have "coping strategies" that help them manage overwhelming amounts of stress (Bradberry). Moving to a new environment without family, friends, and teachers that know every students' name is stressful on its own, but college students also have to be prepared for new, tougher assignments. This is enough to make a freshman feel as though they are drowning, so every individual needs to find a way to relieve stress. There are healthy ways to relieve stress, like exercise, listening to music, or meditation, that allow students to feel comfortable in their new life. Finding a balance in life that also gives them a good attitude and confidence is worthwhile. Attitudes about their intellect can alter the ability to learn for many
Stress is unavoidable, no matter the situation, location, or time; stress is always present. Stress is found in higher levels during the duration in which students attend college. It is predictably higher among college students, freshmans in particular, because of the extreme expectations set upon them by their parents and, of course, society. The need to please their parents, longing for success in life, and being able to sustain a reasonable income in the future, all of which falls into the hands of college students who are making critical decisions which may decide the outcome for a large portion of their lives. If these students end up hating their future jobs, the stress of having to go back into college to study for a new career
With an increased demand for skilled labors, many students nowadays find themselves needing to complete some form of higher education at college to ensure their success in the workplace and their future career goals. Although freshmen students often enter college with high expectations and ambitions, many eventually drop out of college. Why does that happen? In an ever-changing and more competitive environment, the demanding expectations on college students now soar at unprecedented heights, creating stressful and unpleasant experiences for many of them as they try to keep up with all the burdens inflicted upon them. In their writings, Dr. Christine B. Whelan, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Alan Schwartz, and Nisha Ramachandran explore and illustrate some of the stress-creating challenges that freshmen struggle with today. Even though many factors contribute to the huge list of problems for first-year students, many of the problems that create stress for college freshmen fall under the categories of academic factors, (what adverb to add) teachers, and personal-life conflicts.
Stress is no new phenomenon. It’s been around as long as man and has captivated scholars and physicians alike. With the growing demand for degrees in the professional world comes the growth of the number of college students. The relationship between stress and college students has become the subject of on-going research. Several studies show that stress in college students is increasing with time and the authors of those studies are attributing this to an increased number of students. Other research seems to indicate that it isn’t necessarily the stress that is increasing but the awareness of it. Increased awareness of stress, and its unique toll on individuals, allows colleges and students to recognize
In college life, students face many pressures. One of my biggest stressors was keeping my student scholarship. After coming in to college with a 3.3 grade point average, I knew that keeping a 3.0 in college, for my scholarship, was going to be a challenge that I had not yet experienced. This caused me to work even harder and sometimes even too hard. The scholarship played a large factor in choosing Baldwin Wallace as my school of choice, so retaining my reward is of the utmost importance to both me personally, and my parents financially. As I began classes I realized that the work load seemed a lot larger than high school, and sometimes as if it were never going to end. I soon realized how to balance my time between school work and making grades, as well as meeting new people and having fun. There are many enjoyable things that make college the great experience it has been so far, so finding an equilibrium of hard work and good times has been one the best new attributes I have
