While the Muslim community lived in fear and trauma under constant threat from their abusers, they also adapted the “Stockholm Syndrome” posture. Their response was to become shining examples of “The True Islam” in an effort to win favor with their abusers. The Muslim men gathered with a Sheik or Imam to study the Quran and many more relaxed Muslims went back to their traditional practices moving away from American vices such as drinking, smoking, and going to night clubs. Rather than fighting their abusers which surely would have brought great harm to the Muslim community, they decided to build positive feelings among non-Muslims by becoming model citizens and a unified spiritual community. “The True Islam” resurgence within the Muslim community rekindled a collective identity. In the movie there is a District Attorney, Harvey Dent who is a moral and caring man that after being grotesquely disfigured by Batman’s arch nemesis “The Joker”, becomes hateful, seeking vengeance on all the people he considers culpable for his tragedy. Even Batman, in his determination to catch the “Joker” begins to ignore his moral code and justify injustice. Repeated trauma blurs their perception of what is right and what is wrong, especially if they are operating in a perceived survival mode. We are all capable on some level of crossing boundaries, moving from light to dark, justifying the unjust depending on the point where trauma leads us to the breaking point of losing our ability to care about ourselves and others.
