While the Muslim community lived in fear and trauma under constant threat from their abusers, they also adapted the “Stockholm Syndrome” posture. Their response was to become shining examples of “The True Islam” in an effort to win favor with their abusers. The Muslim men gathered with a Sheik or Imam to study the Quran and many more relaxed Muslims went back to their traditional practices moving away from American vices such as drinking, smoking, and going to night clubs. Rather than fighting their abusers which surely would have brought great harm to the Muslim community, they decided to build positive feelings among non-Muslims by becoming model citizens and a unified spiritual community. “The True Islam” resurgence within the Muslim community rekindled a collective identity. In the movie there is a District Attorney, Harvey Dent who is a moral and caring man that after being grotesquely disfigured by Batman’s arch nemesis “The Joker”, becomes hateful, seeking vengeance on all the people he considers culpable for his tragedy. Even Batman, in his determination to catch the “Joker” begins to ignore his moral code and justify injustice. Repeated trauma blurs their perception of what is right and what is wrong, especially if they are operating in a perceived survival mode. We are all capable on some level of crossing boundaries, moving from light to dark, justifying the unjust depending on the point where trauma leads us to the breaking point of losing our ability to care about ourselves and others. After enough assaults to our emotional and intellectual being, the mind will go into overload and survival is the only motivation and life

For this paper, I have chosen to interview an acquaintance of mine who is a devote Muslim and follower of Islam. For the sake of this assignment I will be referring to him under the pseudonym of Jack. I spoke with Jack about some wide-ranging topics discussing things such as, media, bias, stereotypes, and really in general what being a follower of Islam is like in this divided country right now. In our country, today it’s pretty apparent there is a type of fear of Muslims, so much so that 7 heavy populated Muslim countries are not permitted from entering the United States of America. I never had conversations as personal as this with Jack and I feel as if I gained a lot of insight into the types of things minorities, and especially Muslims

The religion of Islam has become a controversial issue in today’s 21st century. In spite of excessively negative representations by Western propaganda, increasing numbers of the population are pursuing to learn more about the wonderful religion of Islam. More frequently than not, these people are becoming more pleasantly startled by the product of their exploration. In fact, increasing numbers of people are embracing Islam nowadays then they did prior to the horrific attacks on September 11th, 2001; which evoked much attention to misconceptions about Islam and Muslims. Islam is a religion which elucidates the way of life and is the second largest religion after Christianity, with approximately one-fifth of the world 's population and is currently the fastest growing religion. Muslims are existent all around the world and come from diverse nationalities, cultures and races. However, Islam instills that all people are principally equal no matter the differences (colour, class, culture, etc.) as long as they are peaceful and law-abiding citizens. The behaviour of particular erroneous groups or individuals outside mainstream Islam cannot be accredited to Islamic beliefs and practices as correspondingly hostility in North Ireland or illegal mafia activities being attributed
Farid Esack describes the situation of progressive Muslims post 9/11. He does this because their role has become significantly important in the society they live in. Progressive Muslims described by him are liberal Muslims who are seeking for a change but according to their conservative values. He describes the attacks from 9/11 represents a collision of two forms of religious fundamentalism, the American capitalistic market that was attacked by the angry religious individuals. These individuals portray an insult and a threat to Islam and to the people who follow it in a decisive correct manner.
Muslim immigrants have arrived to the United States of America from every nuke and corner of the sphere. The population is diverse in their own ways but each one of them bears similar reasons: Some desire to escape an old way of life, others to find a new one. Some wanted to escape violence, others the fetters of penury, or simple lack of opportunity. They have arrived with fervent hope, and often nothing more. The initial response received by them was largely varied. These new Americans found a vast new land hungry for their labor. But some, unfamiliar with these newcomers’ customs and religions, treated the new Americans as outsiders and believed they could never be real Americans. And with the events like the Gulf War and the World Trade Center bombing outpoured anti-Islamic sentiments in the 1990s. These sentiments intensified with the heinous and abominable attacks of September 11th. Muslims were being labeled as “extremists”, “jihadists”, “fanatics”, “fundamentalists” etc. They were being feared, discriminated and even harassed.
The topic of this essay was one that seemed the most relevant at this given moment in time. Post 9/11, Western media became very critical of Islam and the portrayal of Muslims and the negative associations made with them has dramatically increased.

The main idea of this article is to bring insight to the reader about how islam is being remolded by the youth Islamic community within America. To illustrate this revolution the author uses personal accounts from the Muslims she interviewed. One of the main elements portrayed in this article was the idea of Muslim assimilation in the modern western world. The millennials within the Muslim American community often still adhere to the basic tenants and values of their religion however they often follow the religion more loosely in order to blend the two diverse cultures. September 11th holds many hard and upset feelings around the world today. The harsh actions of Muslim extremists unfortunately completely changed the way Muslims are treated, especially in the United States. These events, exacerbated islamophobia. Unfortunately, “the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, connect Muslims and Islam to terrorism within the geographical borders of the United States.” (Byng) Although it has been over a decade since the attack, many still feel racist and discriminatory attitudes towards Muslims. Muslims are the targeted minority in the United States, “the 9/11 terrorist attacks shifted the social and political context for Muslims in the United States. Terrorism within the geographical borders of the United States carried out by Muslims places an identity at the center of national and global politics.” (Byng) The blame of the horrible terrorist attacks, rather than be placed on terrorists or religious extremist, has been placed on Islam in America. After September 11th, hate crimes towards Muslims skyrocketed, “the most dramatic change noted by the report was a more than 1,600 percent increase in reported hate crimes against Muslims -- a jump from 28 hate incidents in 2000 to 481 last year.”
Islam is arguably one of the most misunderstood and relevant topics in modern Western society. Few subjects inspire such fear and hatred in so many people, especially in the United States. According to Batman, Gotham needs a masked vigilante to swiftly restore justice and order to the city. Police officers are openly crooked, while politicians and judges are in the pockets of the mobsters. By the time of The Dark Knight, things have started to improved in Gotham. Batman and Lieutenant Jim Gordon, have had astonishing success fighting the mob in Gotham. Their success has been paralleled by that of District Attorney Harvey Dent, Gotham’s “white knight.” He is seemingly incorruptible and is the just politician that Gotham has been lacking. Justice can prevail outside the law in The Dark Knight, because the Joker, an anarchist villain, is defeated and order is restored to Gotham’s once corrupt and dysfunctional legal system.
Instead, from its onset, Islam spread as a conquering power and remained that way for some time. Explaining it this way, the reader gets a sense of the psychology behind Islam and why, besides being a religious task, spreading Islam is such a goal. By showing the issues Islam faces today in the context of past Islamic traditions, Lewis paints a much clearer picture of the skewed view today’s radicals have and the way they use history to manipulate. He examines influential Muslim voices like Saddam Hussein and Usama Bin Laden, who have used history to give Islam victim status or to claim the continuance of a predecessor’s mission to not only justify terrorist activities, but also to recruit followers. He tells the history of Bin Laden’s statement referring to the “humiliation and disgrace” Islam supposedly has suffered. What Bin Laden was referring to was the defeat of the Ottoman sultanate in 1918 and the imperial presence of Westerners on sacred Muslim lands. Lewis explains the offense many Muslims take to the desecration of their holy lands by foreigners. He describes how the discovery and exploitation of oil in the Holy Land of the Hijaz has exacerbated the growing resentment many Muslims
This survey reveals that the problem with the Islam faith is not racial: The Muslim people are welcomed, the Islam faith is not. The violence that has been perpetrated against America, whether executed or planned, has brought to fruition religious persecution not seen since the persecution of the Jews in W.W.II. This “trust no Arab” attitude has brought shame to the Constitutional intentions of freedom of religion intended by our forefathers, and has set religious tolerance back 200 years. Looking at media representation of Muslim Americans prior to 9-11, it shows religious diversity in America, depicting Muslim America as just another religious community seeking to advance and protect their interests, not unlike other Americans. After 9-11 the media portrayed representations of threat and fear, creating boundaries between Muslims and other Americans. Such depiction transforms the identity of Muslims and American religious pluralism (Byng, M. pg. 3).
