Coming of age for us is getting older, living life like an adult, missing what It feels like to be a kid again, well that’s life we just have to live through it. During this essay I will be explaining what coming of age is and what it means. First I think that coming of age means taking responsibility. To support this reason my first example is, when you get your driver's license it's your responsibility to help out your parents, like getting groceries for your family members to eat; also to take care of your car. Secondarily, when you’re old enough to have kids, it is your duty to take care of your child and care for them. My last example to support the idea of coming of age means taking responsibility is when you have kids and you are a single, parent it is your role to pay for the bill and rent and also taking care of your kids. For each of these examples you just have to make sure you're actually taking responsibility for what you do. …show more content…
In my opinion, i think this because when you are younger some kids are immature, this means that kids would be childish towards something or someone. My first example is when you get older and you have a family and kids, you don’t horseplay in the stores like you did when you were younger, you have to be mature and act like an adult. Another reason is when you get older you have to think of the people around you and think of their needs and wants of other people around that will help you cultivate a reputation as a mature and respectful individual. My last reason to support my second reason is when you get older and you have a family you can't drink, and go to parties and come home late all drunk and be abusive to your wife or kids. That reason is being immature and not taking responsibility for your actions. You need to think before you do, think of what an adult would do, not what a jerk would
Since the first spark of human life, coming-of-age has even occurred at the time of Adam and Eve. Many people think that the only part of maturing is puberty. However, one of the greatest parts of growing up is not, surprisingly, going through puberty. Coming-of-age involves recognizing different perspectives.
14 kids have sealed themselves in a superstore as a freak hailstorm and serious chemical weapons spill threaten to bring the world to its knees. Once brothers Alex and Dean establish a sense of security, they find that their only chance of rescue is to drive 67 miles across the now deadly state of Colorado to the nearest airport for evacuation. Dean and the others with type O bloods decide to stay behind because the poisoned air outside would turn them into savage rage-fueled monsters.
Coming of age is defined as the transition from one’s youth to his or her adulthood. Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, and Lord of the Flies by William Golding all explore this concept. Romeo and Juliet is a story about two star-crossed lovers in the depths of forbidden love despite an ancient family feud. House on Mango Street is a series of vignettes about a young Latina girl’s life growing up in Chicago. Lastly, Lord of the Flies is about a group of abandoned children who work to survive on a deserted island. Each of these stories provides details as to what characteristics define a mature individual, and they also show the various processes to achieve this maturity.
When coming-of-age a person will be continually experiencing, and learning new things. As this happens that person will develop and gain new perspectives on life and the world around them. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout is found gaining new perspectives while she comes-of-age. In David Dobbs’ article “Beautiful Brains”, he shows and explains how gaining new perspectives is a part of coming-of-age. Developing different perspectives is really what coming-of-age is all about. It causes an individual to see the world in a new light, which widens their knowledge and helps them to fully come-of-age and grow
If society was asked what defines “coming of age,” what would it say? Some would say people come of age when they act more mature, think grown up thoughts, or do certain actions. This quote by someone unknown helps form an explanation of what coming of age is: “Maturity doesn’t mean age; it means sensitivity, manners, and how you react.” In the literature piece “The First Part Last,” the author Angela Johnson writes about two teenagers, Bobby and Nia, who struggle with the difficulties of teen pregnancy. Throughout the book, they both face many hardships that put their relationship, patience, and responsibility to the test. With the help of a red balloon, a basketball, and family pictures in a doctor’s office, Bobby comes of age after paying attention to these symbols and signs throughout the novel.
Coming-of-age involves recognizing different perspectives. From looking at people and thinking about what is going on in their life to standing on someone’s porch can give people new perspectives, It does not matter how people gain a new perspective, as long as it changes them it is
age it is also one of the worlds most popular and beloved themes in literature.
Being an adult is the number one thing that children want to be: The desire to get older to do things that you want when you want and having no one say otherwise. However, what is an adult? An ambiguous term that really falls into the hands of the individual, where at Sixteen you can drive, eighteen you can vote, and twenty-one you can drink, for those in the USA, all varying ages that individuals could use as indications of adulthood. Robin Heinig wrote and article “What is it about 20- somethings?” where she discusses Arnett’s proposal about a new developmental stage, “Emerging Adulthood”. Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, an American professor in psychology, believes that we aren 't entering adulthood till the later portions of our twenties. For some, this may be true but for the general population including myself I find this hard to believe. Leo Hendry’s article, “How universal is emerging adulthood? An empirical example”, on emerging adulthood gives a deeper understanding to what this generation 's kids are going through. The late teens are a crucial part to the lives of a young adult. It 's the time that we spend trying to identify ourselves, escape the circumstance that we are put into at a younger age, or just had a better family income. Arnett is not wrong, but all other external factors need to be accounted for before we know, or even consider if emerging adulthood is a new developmental stage.
The younger we are the more protected we are not only with rules and consequences
"A coming of age experience can happen any time during one’s life, most often when it is least expected. It does not discriminate. It is the thread that sews humanity together, a phenomenon, which is undeniable. Convention tells us, it is a defining moment in a child’s life, when the world somehow becomes his or her own" (Heslov, pg. 1). Harper Lee did an excellent job of representing how Scout grew to comprehend the world around her in To Kill A Mockingbird. This novel could be considered a “coming of age” story because Scout learned how to understand people’s perspectives and their personal obstacles.
I think one of the themes is coming of age because it is shown many times throughout the book. Coming of age is shown when Harry has to deal with things that not even adults can deal with and he has to face big tasks. In the book he has to take charge on a lot of things, he starts teaching people how to protect themselves against spells. He is always helping everybody and figuring out the solutions to problems. This effects the book because everybody thinks he's a really good wizard, and he becomes the hero and the center of attention. He becomes trustworthy and gets to know about all the secret stuff that's going on.
Coming of age is very important. It is when you prove that you can take care of yourself and when you set off on your own and become independent. Also, it is when you begin a new life, one where you can make your own decisions. This is very important in the Igbo culture. When the child turns of age to become an adult, it is not that different than western societies.
