On the first day of a new school year the popular thing to do is play an icebreaker name game. My teachers give the quick spiel of: name a (blank) that starts with the same letter as your name. As someone whose name starts with the letter E, I find myself struggling to find a quick example, whether it be an adjective, animal, color, food, etc. Excited? Eel? Electric blue? Eggplant? Everyone shares their name and word beginning with the same letter and the game soon ends. Continuing my education has been a goal of mine for some time, but I haven’t made the commitment until now. There are several reason why I chose to return to school after so long, the primary reason being advancement opportunities in my career. My other motivating factor is my daughter. Growing up in an economically deficient area, I witness the carelessness that plagues the conversation of college on a daily basis. Meaning, where I am from, it is seldom that people actually desire to attend college. Therefore, college is important to me because I would like to break the stigma that comes with the idea of college and I feel that education is the key to success in any civil society.

The best description of who I am begins with what I believe to be true, I am a Christian, more so a follower of Christ. I enjoy attending church along with learning about Jesus our Lord. In addition, I was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but I was not raised there as I moved frequently throughout the east coast due to my step father’s job. My culture consist of a mixture of Puerto Rico from my mother’s side, Nicaragua from my father’s side along with Mexico from my step father’s side. I come from a lower-class working family, in which I am the oldest of three. I was raised mostly with different families due to personal tragedies that happened during my childhood. As of now, this is my second year at Salem College where I continue to pursue my educational career to become a social help for those in need. I consider myself to be humble, hardworking and determined. My ultimate purpose is to serve others and guide the broken with words along with actions of encouragement. I am someone who thrives despite the circumstances and the fact that I am here attending college I am proud. Personally, I take self-care to be imperative, because in order to help others, you have to begin with you.

Of course, the most obvious advantages involve the idea that college will provide you with a better life. And by a better life I mean the works. You will be introduced to better job opportunities, chances to work in the field of your choice, higher income, expanded knowledge, better social skills, independence, a chance to conquer developmental milestones and investments into your future. According to “The Atlantic.Com”, a survey showed that many people believe that college degrees are inherited. Therefore, if you obtain a college degree then your children are more likely to do the same and your children’s children will also follow, creating a cycle of educated individuals instead of high school drop outs.
