Why Accountability Is Important It is important to note first, what accountability is. I will state why it is important as well as go over scenarios in dealing with accountability. Accountability means being liable to being called to account; answerable. A good military definition of the word would be and usually means to be liable for paperwork and or property, and personnel; usually of lesser grade and rank. When dealing with army leadership and duties; being a soldier and or a leader means being accountable for what you do or don’t do as well as implied duties and responsibilities. Sometimes, we are the only source of information as to how people may think what our behavior is and how all other Americans may behave in their own country based off of even one soldier’s sole actions whether negative or positive. We must be accountable for what we do or don’t do. If we, as soldiers, are assigned a task that is to be completed, but we fail and do not get it accomplished, then we have to account and answer for it. If we lose a piece of equipment, it becomes lost or destroyed, we have to be held accountable for it and solve the problem to correct the situation however it may need to be corrected. Mission readiness is the answer to why accountability is so important. We must accomplish the mission at all costs with the least amount of loss whether it be soldiers or equipment. Without all of the soldiers or equipment present the mission may not be able to be accomplished. Even if only one soldier or piece of equipment is not present the mission may not be fully capable of being accomplished as the lack of either one would be detrimental to the mission. If a piece of equipment or a soldier is not on time at the start or finish of a mission, it may determine the outcome of the mission in regards to it being accomplished and a success or not. Accountability is the act of knowing where something or someone is at any given moment. This is crucial in today’s professional environment for a couple of different reasons. Companies, businesses, and pretty much anything that is being used to represent a group of people or has some kind of image it needs/wants to uphold has to maintain accountability for many different things. Whether it be equipment it uses to do its job or employees that assist customers and get the jobs that need to be done, done. Eventually a job has to be done by someone and if the job is in high demand then it is crucial to keep checks of the location of things so that when something needs to get done everything can fall in place.
Everyone knows that a soldier is someone that has made the ultimate sacrifice. By that I mean someone that has gave up being with family and friends to go and help the world. However, being a civilian may be difficult at times, it does not even compare. The responsibilities of a solders can be challenging, rewarding and yet demanding. As a United States Soldier, fighting for our country, both home and abroad, we are considered as a band of brothers, well some may even call it a family whom incorporate the antic of military first, family second and accountability fits into the category as top priority. It is vital because we can reasonably expect to be faced with decisions that will involve the application of violence upon an enemy. In today’s environment of high scrutiny from nearly every angle, a single decision that leads to the immoral or unlawful application of violence can have a direct effect upon the trust relationship between the people of the Unites States and the Army. All of the ethical approaches described in this essay became part of my daily experiences in life. Being a soldier alone involves a great deal of ethical and immoral encompasses. By virtue of deontological approach, being an American soldier is ethical.
Throughout my schooling career I have often taken on the role as a leader. Consequently, a great deal of power is placed upon my shoulders as I am often the one making the final decision. As such, I am always accountable for my actions and my group’s actions. Being the leader, if I am not accountable this creates a negative precedent showing the group that being accountable is not important. Thus, a group that is not accountable for their actions fails as no one is able to fess up to their mistake and move forward to a solution. I see this first hand when playing hockey. When a goal is scored, players will often blame the other players for the team’s failure. This causes issues because if no one is accountable for their actions then no change can be made and the system continues to fail. If the players became accountable they would be more effective in leading change and developing a better plan to prevent goals. This is on a small scale however, accountability effects much larger groups and leaders. If leaders are unable to be accountable, then their leadership is ineffective as they will never be able to move
Accountable means someone knows where you are at any given time and they do not need to worry about you. Being responsible means you know when to wake up and get ready for work in the allotted time to make sure you are accounted for. Accountability and Uniformity are the main things that need to be done when being in the army. Accountability must be met to the standard to which of that each soldier must be in formation at the given place and time by the higher ranking personnel orders. If the soldier does not meet that standard to whom he or she does not show up will receive a counseling statement or UCMJ. The counseling statement will state what you have done to not meet the standard and it will tell you what you must do as to correcting your actions as soldier. It does help you become a better soldier just as long as you do not repeat the same problem. As for a UCMJ action that may lead to a chapter out, meaning that you will or may get booted out the army. The company must also analyze compliance with merit systems and identify and monitor improvements during this stage” (Satterlee, 2013, p. 205). Dictionary.com defines accountability as “the state of being accountable, liable, or answerable” (2018).
Accountability for ones actions will be tantamount on a daily basis. I will hold myself accountable for my actions and deeds, and will expect others in my employ to do the same.
Fuhrman (2004) stated that these new standards-based accountability systems comprise a theory of action as described by Argyris and Schon (1978). The tenet of a theory of action is that humans develop actions to achieve the results that they wish to occur. In this framework, individuals such as policy makers who do not have a direct role in the day-to-day education of students develop accountability systems to attempt to improve the quality of education. Fuhrman further delineates the assumptions that underlie an effective accountability system within this framework:
Accountability affects your everyday life without you even realizing it. At this point in our lives it is no longer a job but a part of life and a sign of responsibility. Another sign of maturity is holding yourself accountable for your own actions. If you are one of those people who goes around making excuses for everything you do, people will begin to lose faith in you, and in turn you will not only lose your credibility but their trust as well. After a certain point excuses become less relevant or believable and you are seen and/or treated as if you were lying. No leader likes the “It wasn’t my fault”, “I was gonna”, or “see what had happened was” guy/gal and you shouldn’t want to be him/her. It is always better to hold yourself accountable for your own actions, you will gain a lot more respect that way. Once again accountability plays a major role in the quality of your everyday life and the lives of those around you as well. Good accountability or a lack of accountability can mean the difference in somebody getting paid the right amount or even at all. It could be the difference of receiving a tax refund or paying the state more than what you owe. It could be your children returning safely from a field trip or sending out an ABB or Amber Alert. The meaning of ethical and moral for me is an ideology standard to analyze the consequence. Also, it could be a regulation to limit a person’s outside behavior and inside thought so that he/she has a guidance to find out the correct direction, and to solve the perplexity. Because I ponder that the assignment of the leadership and stewardship is to provide a valuable advice and organize the orders from higher level. They have to focus on every detail, and concentrate on the variable situation. For what? For achievement and decreasing casualty in the battlefield. The most valuable work in the battlefield is not only winning the war, but also securing the soldiers’ life.
