The kidnapping The book I am reading is called The Cellar, written by Natasha Preston. The main character in this book is a 16 year old girl named Summer. Summer lives in a small town with her mom, dad and brother, Henry. One evening Summer wanted to meet some friends at a club to hang out and have fun. The club is only a two minute walk from her house through the woods and she had done it many times. She left the house in a rush, quickly saying goodbye to her parents and boyfriend, Lewis. Never once thinking about the dangers of walking outside alone at night. When Summer got to the club her best friend Kerri found her and asked if she’d seen their other friend Rachel in the woods because she ran off after getting upset about a boy. Summer said she didn’t see her, so they thought they should probably go look for her. After calling Rachel's name and getting no response, Kerri and Summer decided to split up and look for her separately. Just about the time Kerri was out of Summers sight a guy hiding behind a tree stepped out and slowly started walking towards Summer. As he got closer he began to say “come here Lily, no need to be scared” over and over again. Just as …show more content…
When they got to the last step he put her down and went back up the stairs. As Summer started to cry she heard a voice saying “hello Lily come here”. When she looked up she saw another girl and behind her was two more girls. Summer screamed that she wasn’t Lily and began to cry even harder. The three girls tried to calm Summer down as best as they could and when she finally started to listen to them they started explaining some things to her. They first told her their names, which are Rose, Poppy and Violet. These were not their real names but the man renamed the girls as he abducted them. They told Summer that her name was now Lily, and she must go by that name or the man will get mad and most likely end up killing

Lily starts off stuck living in an unloving, abusive household and decides to free herself from the negative atmosphere that she had been living in her whole life. Lily is perpetually abused by her father. He forces her to kneel on Martha White's, gets exasperated every time she speaks, and yells at her for no reason. Lily is not the only one noticing the terrible treatment, Rosaleen does too. Once after Lily had to kneel on the Martha White's Rosaleen said to her, “Look at you, child. Look what he’s done to you” (Kidd 25). Noticing the unloving treatment Lily gets, Rosaleen knew that their household was demoralizing place for Lily to be in, which is why she didn’t question when Lily when she later runs away. Lily one day realizes she needs to do something about her horrible life at home. While sitting in her room she hears a voice in her
When lily went to South Carolina she goes to a lady named August. August is very artifice. Lily stays at her honey house for several months with her aunt Rooselyn. As she lives there she goes through many adventures and meets a ton of new people. She meets her true love Zach and two sister of August named May and June. She finds out a lot about her mother. She finds out that her mother Deborah stayed at the same honey house. She also finds out that her mother ran away from T-Ray when he was abusive. Lily fights and eventually convinces T-Ray that she is better off with August and forgives him.
Despite the violence and grim that Summer is put through, she never gives up hope of being found. For seven months she is kept in Clover’s cellar, yet she never gives up hope. She is constantly looking for any glimpse of escape. She repeatedly tells the other girls that her family will find them saying “Lewis will find me. He will never give up” (143). Through her character, Preston is able to demonstrate how people can stay strong despite the situations they are put in. Summer shows how hope can get you through any obstacle despite the severity of the situation.
Summer, or Lily as she’s called in the cellar, is a beautiful 16 year old girl who is thin and has straight, blonde hair and blue eyes. Summer has a boyfriend, Lewis. She also gets good grades. It seems like Summer has a bright future until Clover makes her whole world come crashing down.
The Cellar, by Natasha Preston, is a book about a teenage girl named Summer who gets kidnapped. Summer gets kidnapped by a man named Clover, who is trying to make his, “perfect family.” He keeps four girls in his basement at a time and calls them all by names of flowers, Lilly, Poppy, Rose, and Violet. Summer, who is referred to as Lilly while she is kidnapper, spends seven months with three other girls in the cellar trying to survive until they finally escape. While Lilly is in the cellar she has to watch many horrible things happen, for example, girls getting stabbed to death by Clover. At the end of the book the police arrive at Clover’s house to rescue the girls. After the girls are found Lilly returns to live a normal life with her family and new friends.
When summer finds out the truth about her dad she is shocked. Summer always thought her dad was a good person. She always thought that her mom was wrong about all of the horrible things she said about her father. Summer never thought her father would do something like this. When Summer goes back home her mother tells her what really happened. “Dad has a daughter? I said numbly. It seems all i can do is mumble moms words
Lily comes to know three incredible women called the Boatwrights. Their names are August, June, and May. Lily became closest to August although she was close to May and June, also. Lily felt as though August had a comforting and consoling way about her. August once told Lily “Actually, you can be bad at something...but if you love doing it, that will be enough.” (Kidd 111). Her motivational life advice helped to guide Lily. Furthermore, August had to be the one to tell Lily that they had lost May; May had killed herself. Lily did not take the news so well. Lily claimed she had started to “shiver…[she] could feel the teeth in [her] mout, crashing against each other.” (Kidd 193).
Summer agrees and starts looking for Rachel. On her way to the park, alone at night, Summer hears a man say Lily. Scared and shocked, Summer spins around and sees a tall dark haired man coming towards her. Saying “Lily?”. Summers stomach then drops. He keeps calling
The four girls including summer new in order to keep Colin happy they all had to call each other the names Colin gave them, such as Violet, Poppy, Rose, and Summer as Lily, that was how they knew they were going to be able to take care of themselves, because if they called each other those names, he would bring them down food. For example, on page 229, Summer explains, “I woke up to Violet whimpering and crying in pain from when Colin had hit her. In about a half an hour I will change her bandages and give her half of a pain pill.” In other words, Summer is showing that she is caretaking because she was taking care of Violet by changing her bandages and giving her medicine when she needed it. Another example of the caretaking is on page 184, Summer say’s “ I was putting out a damp cloth on Poppy’s cut from when clover stabbed her in the stomach.”
