Is Tom most responsible for Gatsby's death? Daisy? Myrtle? Gatsby himself? Give reasons why or why not each character is implicated in the murder. Gatsby was murdered by Wilson, because he thought that Gatsby was the one that hit his wife and killed her. Tom is a main contributor to Gatsby’s death because Myrtle was his mistress. Tom was the one that suggested he drive Gatsby’s car to town with Jordan and Nick. Myrtle saw them that day and Nick noticed “her eyes, [which became] wide with jealous terror were fixed not on Tom, but on Jordan Baker, whom she took to be his wife” (125). On the way back home, Gatsby and Daisy were driving the yellow car, which was the car that Tom was driving earlier. Myrtle ran out in front of the car as if “she wanted to speak to [them], [thinking they] were somebody she knew” (143). She ran thinking that it was Tom and that he would stop but, it wasn’t. Myrtle was the one murdered in the accident with the car. She is somewhat responsible because she ran out in front of the car, however, she was just trying to get their attention. So therefore I don't really think we can blame Myrtle because she wasn't asking to be hit. It was an accident. One of the reasons that Daisy is responsible for Gatsby’s death is because she …show more content…
Also, they both fell in love with people that were higher up in society and they both died trying to pursue what they wanted. Gatsby fell in love with Daisy, although she wouldn't marry him because she wanted someone who had money he had nothing. He thought to earn Daisy’s love he had to become rich, so he got into an illegal-strode business and he “bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores…in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter…”(133). “Gatsby bought [a] house so that Daisy would be across the bay” (78). He threw huge parties “[expecting] her to wander into one of his parties some night”
After Daisy killed Myrtle, and Tom puts every scandal on the Gatsby which straightly leads to the Gatsby’s death. Daisy even does not turn up at Gatsby ‘s funeral. Maybe she is guilty or she does not want to face her stupid love with a poor guy. Besides,Tom and Daisy continue enjoying their upper life, like Gatsby never get into their life and they never know
Most think that Gatsby and Tom are very different characters but they are the same in more ways than one would think. Both Gatsby and Tom use a lot of people in this novel. For example, Gatsby is only using Nick to get to Daisy. Gatsby uses other people as well; he only throws the parties to see if Daisy would come. Tom, like Gatsby, uses people. Tom used Daisy when he married her just so he could have someone to settle down with. When he meets Myrtle he realizes he truly does not love Daisy and he keeps Myrtle for sexual fulfilment. After Myrtle dies Tom runs off with Daisy because she is the only one that he has left. Both men live in luxury and both men think they should have Daisy. Both Gatsby and Tom will do almost anything and everything to get what
In the final few chapters we finally get to see Gatsby’s true colors. We see that Gatsby is expressing love towards Daisy when they all decide to go to New York for the day. Tom becomes suspicious and accuses Gatsby of having an affair with his wife and also being a bootlegger. Gatsby tells Tom that he and Daisy love one another and that they are going to be together like they once were in the past. Gatsby was wrong and Daisy ends up staying with Tom. Myrtle Wilson is then ran over by Daisy but Gatsby says that he will take the blame and ends up getting shot. At the beginning of this novel we thought that Gatsby was a well liked, popular guy, but it turns out that no one shows up to attend his funeral.
Fueled by anger and hurt after the death of his wife, George sets off to find the person behind the wheel of the yellow car. He first goes to Tom’s house since he had seen Tom driving the car earlier that day. From there, Tom points George towards Gatsby. It was at Gatsby’s home that “the chauffeur- he was one of Wolfsheim’s proteges- heard the shots” (161). Gatsby’s body was found in his swimming pool. Nick says that “It was after we started with Gatsby toward the house that the gardener saw Wilson’s body a little way off in the grass, and the holocaust was complete” (162). After George killed Gatsby, he then kills himself. It is unknown if Tom knows that Daisy was the one driving the car. If he does know, then perhaps he is protecting Daisy as well as getting Gatsby out of the picture. Tom knows that George intended on killing whoever hit his wife, so by pointing him towards Gatsby, Tom practically finalizes Gatsby’s death. If Tom did this intentionally them he was ensuring that Gatsby would be out of the picture, guaranteeing his future with Daisy would be terminated. Tom wants Daisy all to himself. Figuratively speaking, Tom murdered Gatsby’s dream of being with Daisy. The death of the characters and their dreams all tie together to create the famous tragedy known as The Great
The story The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald takes you through the life of the protagonist of the novel, Jay Gatsby, who is shot to death in the end. Who was really the reason for Gatsby’s death? There are many of reasons that lead up to Gatsby’s death and several people who are considered to have caused it. Although George Wilson physically killed him, Tom Buchanan, Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby himself all take part in the death. Tom’s anger, Daisy’s carelessness, and Gatsby’s idea of the American Dream all contribute to his death in the end.
To understand the nature of Gatsby’s death, first you must know the circumstances that precede it. Myrtle, Mr. Wilson’s wife, was run over by Gatsby’s car, which Daisy was driving. Driven by vengeance and the mistaken belief that Gatsby had killed Myrtle, Mr. Wilson proceeded to murder Gatsby and then himself.
So with that being said, he turns to making his money by illegal ways like bootlegging. Daisy is to blame for most of Gatsby’s problems because of the way she feels about money, she has affected other characters due to this issue. Gatsby has to be the most affected by Daisy and her decisions, like not waiting for him when he went to war. Daisy has Gatsby head over heels, no matter what she does, he cannot stop obsessing over her and will support her in everything she decides to do. Even to the end of the book where she kills Myrtle, Tom’s mistress with Gatsby’s car. Despite the fact that he knows that she killed a person, he still wants to take the blame for her. A little before she killed Myrtle, Tom finds out about the affair she was having with Gatsby. Tom confronts them about it and Gatsby comes clean to him and tells him what he thinks is true. Which is that Daisy loves him not Tom and she wants to leave him, yet daisy is speechless because at some point she did love Tom and is not so sure she wants to leave him. Gatsby ends up dead because of Daisy bright idea of killing someone and her husband Tom blames it on Gatsby knowing that Wilson was going to kill him. This shows the type of person Daisy is, so she has made many decisions in her past that eventually came to hunt many others in the present till the end of the book her
Gatsby thought he was being chivalrous for Daisy, but he did not care that Daisy chose not to take responsibility for her hit-and-run. Myrtle’s husband, George Wilson, gets revenge for Myrtle’s loss, assuming that Gatsby had an affair with his wife and killed her once he finds a dog leash and Myrtle 's belongings. George kills Gatsby,
First of all, Tom is indirectly responsible for Gatsby’s death because he tells George who owned the yellow car and where to find it. “‘Tom,’ I inquired, ‘what did you say to Wilson that afternoon?’ He stared at me without a word and I knew I had guessed right about those missing hours. I started to turn away but he took a step after me and grabbed my arm. ‘I told him the truth,’ he said” (190). This quote shows that Tom told
“Is Tom most responsible for Gatsby’s death? Daisy? Myrtle? Gatsby himself? Give reasons why or why not each character is implicated in the murder.”
She, however, takes advantage of the fact that Gatsby is willing to do anything for her, and convinces him to take responsibility for Myrtle’s death, which she caused! Gatsby is so blinded by his love for her that he does not even realise that he is being manipulated. For example when questioned by Nick as to whether or not Daisy was driving when the accident causing Myrtle’s death occurred, Gatsby responds by saying: “Yes... but of course I’ll say I was.” This lie eventually leads to his death, and Daisy does not even have the decency to attend his funeral.
Thanks to his wealthy lifestyle, Gatsby’s love life and business was gossiped about by all. For example, Jay Gatsby was selfish and his actions to keep his relationship private supported that. In addition, everyone knew Gatsby’s expensive car, so when Daisy hit Myrtle in it, everyone thought it was Gatsby. At the scene of the accident, Tom heard the description of the car that hit his mistress, and he angrily pronounced, “”The God Damn coward!” he whimpered. “He didn’t even stop his car”” (Fitzgerald 149). Therefore, Tom, who despised Gatsby, now thought that he had hit Myrtle, and he would want revenge. The fact that Tom knew it was gatsby’s car that had hit Myrtle. Hence, “By half past two he was in West Egg where he asked someone the way to Gatsby’s house. So by that time he knew Gatsby’s name” (Fitzgerald 168). Thanks to his very public life, Mr.Wilson easily found him and killed him. Shortly after Gatsby’s passing, the press flooded his house and then flooded the news with false stories accusing him of the actions of his companions and actions. Hance Gatsby’s public encounters le to his very public
Without any though, he takes the blame for the death of Tom's mistress, Myrtle. Gatsby doesn't make a lot of verbally expressed observations; he speaks with his actions and his thoughts.
Even though Gatsby is considered a cause for his own death, Daisy and Tom both are culprits for his death as well.
Good morals and values are considered to be good qualities in most people’s perspective. In Fitzgerald’s, morality is something that many characters lack. Murder, bootlegging, and adultery are all traits that the characters in the novel possess. Myrtle Wilson is one of the two characters that is murdered in the story. In this conversation between Nick and Gatsby, “’Well, I tried to swing the wheel—‘ He broke off and suddenly I guessed the truth. ‘Was Daisy driving?’ ‘Yes’” Gatsby reveals the truth about who was driving (Fitzgerald 143). This proves that Daisy was driving when Myrtle was hit and killed. Gatsby is also murdered in the story. George Wilson, Myrtle’s husband, kills Gatsby because he is told that Gatsby is who killed his wife. Hickey writes, “He shot Gatsby and killed himself,” talking about George when he goes to Gatsby’s house in pursuit to Murder Gatsby (4). This proves that George murdered Gatsby.
