Essay on What is the Definition of a Hero?

The definition of a hero. A person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Another definition is the main male character in a story, play or film. Let’s think about this for a minute. What does the stereotypical hero look like? Chiseled features and some sort of tight costume or uniform. They display qualities such as bravery, immortality, and an undying devotion to the longevity of the human race. Oh, and don’t forget their superhuman powers; speed, strength, mind reading etc. Does a hero always have to demonstrate physical strength? Does he always have to save the human race in a valiant act of pure courage? What truly defines a hero in every sense of the word? I believe acts of perseverance and emotional strength suit this word more accurately. Or, those who save the human race by teaching and encouraging us to save ourselves.

The idea of a true hero is varied from person to person, because each viewpoint has a different idea of the personality that makes one a hero. There have been many fiction and non-fiction heroes that show different character traits, which influence people’s definitions of a hero. However, each person’s unique thought about a hero still focuses about one central idea: a hero must prove himself in order to earn his heroic status. This is the cornerstone of all the opinions about heroes because heroes have to show their heroism in order to become who they are in the end. At the beginning they are inexperienced, ordinary people who go on their adventures, and face their fears and weaknesses, but they develop greatly throughout these journeys.

A hero is somebody who inflicts an unforgettable act of positivity, either for their community or towards the world. Heroes require certain qualities that will cause them to be their very best. These qualities include extreme willpower, durability, and independence. Most people when asked who their personnel hero is they name a family member. This is because a parent 's natural instinct is to protect their children and put their needs first. Heroes are prevalent in everyone’s life. Whether someone’s hero is a living person or a fabled character from a movie, everybody has come into contact with some sort of hero. In fact, the concept of heroes has existed for hundreds of years, dating all the way back to Ancient Greece. Over time, heroes have drastically changed. As society has evolved, our heroes have evolved with it. Their goals and motivations have changed to coincide with the views of modern society. Modern day heroes have less selfish motives, better qualities, and are portrayed differently than ancient heroes.

What makes someone a hero? In today society the criteria of what a hero is or is not maybe confused by what should be constitutes heroism. Some feel that the word hero gets throw around way too much, for example to celebrity, public safety personnel, the average Human, and especially service man and women the ones that have fought for their county. Can all these people hold the title of being a hero? In this short report we will look into how others define what a hero is, my own concept of what a hero means to myself, and how one of Saint Leo’s core values can be considered a very heroic trait.

A hero is not a movie character. A hero is not someone who never fails. A hero is not someone who does something valiant when he has nothing to lose and something to gain. I have a hero in my life. My hero is my lovely mother. She showed me the right path in life. She taught me what’s right and erroneous and I thank her for that.
