What it means to be an American has nothing to do with race, gender, size, origin, etc. Being an American solely relies on how far we have came as a country to call the United States of America a home, how we have fought through blood, sweat, and tears; depressions, wars, and movements for rights. Being an American means there is freedom of religion so you have the right to believe in whatever suits you. Americans work with the opportunities given to us to not only better, as well as protect our homeland and retrieve knowledge to better our future, but Americans give up their own lives to help do the same thing for other countries as well. Smooth seas never made a skilled sailor, the more you go through the more information you pick up along your adventure and the more strength and wisdom you recieve. Simply living in America doesn't define you as an American. Being able to proudly own that you're an american, giving up things to better the country, working overtime, helping those who are homeless, picking up the litter, loving your country for what it is. If you don't contribute, if you can't own it, and if you can't stand up for it, you're not an american. Being American is being free, having the right to believe in what you want, being able to not only have a dream, but make that dream come true. America isn't perfect by any means, and a lot of things that happen here aren't fair whatsoever, but nowhere in the word is perfect. Not alot of countries in the world have a democracy, or get to vote for their president, or even have choices and opportunities for what they want to do with their life.
