What It Means To Be An American Essay

The definition of an American means is relating to, or a characteristic of the United States or its inhabitants. But being an American to me means that you have freedom, choice, respect, and coming together as one community or nation. As Americans I hope we all can possess the four traits I have listed.

To me personally I feel like to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. We might not all be perfect in the way of having everything we want , but it is one of the only countries to have rights given to people of different raises and gender. America does not have does not have a very good amount of poverty. But instead we have our own personal choices given to us by the people who fought and passed away for our freedom that we have today. Being an american means to go beyond yourself to create your own legacy, and to not give up until you achieve your goal.

Being an American to me means more than just loving watching baseball and eating apple pie. It's about following the American Dream. The dream of always striving to achieve something better. I once heard a quote from Edward L. Hudgins that reads “An American is anyone who loves life enough to want the best that it has to offer. Americans look to more than the next meal; they look to the future, the long term, a better tomorrow.” To me this quote means that Americans aren't here to settle, they are here to achieve their dream, the American dream.

Americans have the freedom that most other countries do not have. There are still some countries, that classes in power, still uses everything from force of religion, to gender inequality, to oppress their people, and robb them from their right and liberation. These countries, for example, do not allow their citizens the right to vote,or whip. lastly they rob them from their right and liberation. “I think America offers great opportunities” (Jean, What is the american dream?) What does it mean to be an American? In my eyes to be an American means to have privileges, rights, and freedom. America isn't perfect, but it is one of the only countries that have rights given to people of different diversities and gender. America does not have tremendous poverty. Instead we have choices given to us by the people who fought and died for the American people. Without George Washington and the other patriots who planted the first seed in the ground and help plant the American nation we live in now who knows what America would be like now.

It means so many things and is different for each person. As an American, we have the right to be successful, and that's a very important thing. We take our freedoms, and what we are blessed with for granted by not putting your head in the books, and working hard for what you want.
