In the past ten years the world population exceeded six billion people with most of the growth occurring in the poorest, least developed countries in the world. The rapidly increasing population and the quickly declining amount of land are relative and the rate at which hunger is increasing rises with each passing year. We cannot afford to continue to expand our world population at such an alarming rate, for already we are suffering the consequences. Hunger has been a problem for our world for thousands of years. But now that we have the technology and knowledge to stamp it out, time is running short. Food security is one of the largest problems facing our world today. To be "food secure" a country must have enough …show more content…
Building a foundation together is building one that will last and one that will be finished together gradually over time. If we not only donate technology to these countries, but also work with them to fit the technology into their culture and lifestyles, then they will feel like they are a part of the solution. There are programs today working towards this goal. The following are descriptions of three programs dedicated to teaching small-scale farmers to become more self-sufficient. Self-Help International was established in Waverly, Iowa and has been fighting world hunger and promoting self-reliance since 1959. It is an ecumenical organization devoted to empowering farmers in developing countries to increase their food production efficiency and improve their incomes. Self-Help International's mission statement is "to alleviate hunger by helping people help themselves." Self-Help focuses on agricultural and technological development, nutrition, rural transportation, marketing training, and leadership development. Self-Help International has a variety of projects in third world countries. These projects have several objectives that they address including training small-scale farmers to improve their methods of farming and transportation. They are also assisting in dealing with post-harvest problems of storage, processing, and marketing. Another objective is training people in the use of Quality Protein
World hunger is a very serious issue in today’s world, that is very stunning in a world full of resources and food to feed the hungry. World hunger affects millions around the world. There are 795 million malnutritioned people around the world today. The good news is that hunger is a problem that can be solved. There is enough food in the world to feed everyone. Today’s knowledge, and willing people can just be enough to solve the main issue of world hunger.
“Hunger and malnutrition are the number one risk to health worldwide. Each year the death toll exceeds that of AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis combined.” There are around 800 million people in the world deprived from proper nourishment and statistic say it’s possible to feed everyone, but is it really? There are many different causes of hunger, such as: poverty, wealth inequalities, natural disasters, war, and food/ resource waste. Although there are many causes of hunger, thankfully there are some solutions that could be quite effective. These include: education, transfer of wealth, empowering women, international support, and technology. Despite the fact there are many solutions the crucial step in ending world hunger is implanting them into society successfully.
World hunger for many years has been a topic of interest that still has been unjustified. Many Americans here in the United States are suffering from hunger due to various situations. Although there is open doors for people who need the support, many still believe the crutch and aid of the federal government is still not giving enough to the needy. In fact, instead of giving more to the poor and to the people who need the aid to provide for their family, they are actually taking away. The president of the United States believes in making budget cuts for aid in order to box out junk food and portray the nutritional value of healthy products. What would be the best support for world and answer to the world hunger crisis? A few answers to the unjustified topic of world hunger would include larger agriculture, cutting down on federal aid, and GMOs.
However, some believe, that a shift in the way we produce food may have some unintended consequences. They contend that poverty in nations such as Africa and Asia, is caused by the low productivity of the unindustrialized farm labor. The U.S. Agriculture Department projects, without reform, there will be over a thirty percent increase in the numbers of the ‘food insecure’ people in those nations over the next decade (Paarlberg 179).
The organization 's main concerns are to identify the main causes of hunger and impoverishment problems, and to find solutions to the problems and teach them to the communities that need them, to raise awareness, give sensitivity training, raise education standards and have a sense of organization in order to strengthen capacity among women, men and youth, also to take part in national and international campaigns, social and environmental justice movements, and democratization and citizenship that is focusing on the same goals, to advocate strategically around public policy, in alliance with other national and international networks, with the aim of achieving necessary structural changes; and they want to advocate relationships built on equality, honor, and unity also as lifestyle honesty application within and between the national and international communities (Presbyterian Mission).
Without some system of worldwide food sharing, the proportion of people in the rich and poor nations might eventually stabilize. The overpopulated poor countries would decrease in numbers, while the rich countries that had room for more people would increase. Hardin continues on to show that the modern approach to foreign aid stresses the export of technology and advice, rather than money and food! An ancient Chinese proverb once said: “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach him how to fish and he will eat for the rest of his days” (Hardin, Pg. 84). A number of programs for improving agriculture in the hungry nations known as the “Green Revolution” have taken a big stand in offering harvest and greater resistance to crop damage due to action taken on this advice. It is said that foundations such as “miracle rice” and “miracle wheat” are one of the most prominent advocates of a world food bank.
What brought me here is during graduate school I was taking class called Development Ventures. It was a class where the first day you go in and the professor challenges you with a really juicy question like, “Your goal for this class is to come up with one business idea. Make it help at least one billion people.” For me, I worked in agriculture; and what I realized is, if I want to think about solving this crazy problem, it’s probably going to be farmers because most of the world is poor, and work or live in rural areas. They do agriculture as their primary source of income and livelihood. It would have something to do with spoilage based on what I’ve seen in the field. From that class, the need to tackle
By empowering countries to grow their way out of poverty, we can break the cycle of hunger and build a more stable world for future generations. New tools and technologies brought to struggling agriculturists is key. Trade is key to bringing food security to 800 million people that remain chronically
project that addresses the problem of hunger in the community in which we live and work,
World Food Summit defines food security as: “Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life”. (World Food Summit, 1996) On the contrary, the food insecurity means the situation people who are lack of food or nutrition. A person who lives in such situation for a very long time cannot access enough nutritious food to be healthy. Additionally, food insecurity can be chronic, seasonal or transitory (FAO, 2000). At present, the
There are thousands of starving children in the world and people have the money to feed them but there is a waste of money on making a commercial.about the issue. UNICEF, The United Nations Children Fund, was first founded on December 11, 1946. This organization gives compassion and developing assistance to children and mothers in developing countries.
Hunger is one of the long-lasting international problems that have attracted continuous attention from both scholars and decision makers. Indeed, the history of humanity is “essentially a story of peoples’ attempts to feed themselves.” Unlike climate change, hunger is not a recent problem that people have not dealt with before. Valuable experience is learned from countries that have successfully overcome hunger, or at least those which have reduced the number of hungry people dramatically. As G. Edward Schuh suggests, we know how to solve the world’s food problem and thus to feed a substantially larger global population than we now
In many countries, people lie awake at night with empty stomachs due to hunger. Most of these countries are the poorest in the world. In order to stop hunger countries, like Honduras, organizations must work together. The U.S. Bureau of Food Security should partner with Feed the Future to help farmers grow crops and help the rural areas improve in Honduras.
Introducing new technologies to a country that has zero to none now is very risky. Gates states that they “will give the poor more control...and help them transform their lives.” (Gates, Bill and Melinda 17). My concern is the lack of infrastructure, Gates’ can’t just bring in tons of technology with no way to use it. In order from lives to be transformed they organization should be creating infrastructure that will allow the people to adapt to a new way of
Second- Agriculture, fisheries and water management projects- improved food security and nutrition in the aid program are vital because millions of people’s livelihood depends on food, it also lead to increased economic participation. According to the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research-ACIAR in Tokila, new program for managing the pests caused growth in sales of cocoa beans from 19 tones to 128 tones in just two years.
