Although the answer to this question can be defended either way, I feel that George is justified in killing Lennie. Aside form the fact that Lennie has been and will continue to be a hindrance to George in both his personal and professional life, this is not George's main motivation for carrying out such a serious deed. Ultimately, George kills Lennie in a sense of mercy. Lennie, although he may have continued on living a happy, oblivious life, would most likely have found a much worse demise. Due to his lack of cognitive skills and his unbridled brute strength, Lennie continuously found himself in situations where not only did he do something that gets him in trouble or that he didn't mean to do, but angers other people in the process. In fact, when George ultimately does choose to kill Lennie, Lennie was essentially on the run. Curly and the rest of the people from the farm were on a man hunt to kill Lennie and possibly George because of the trouble that he had caused for all of them (mainly the accidental manslaughter of Curly's wife). They certainly would not have been as nice, comforting, or humane as George was in killing him. George did not see an end to Lennie's antics, and so "putting him out of his misery" was a way to protect himself from Lennie, but also Lennie from himself. …show more content…
Before they came to Salinas they farmed in Weed, where Lennie got into very similar trouble. When Slim asked George what happened in Weed he explained, Well that girl told tells the law she been
Did George make the right decision when he killed his best friend Lennie? George and Lennie became friends when they were young. Lennie had an aunt named Clara, that would always take good care of Lennie. Due to Lennie’s special needs, George did not want to see him go through the pain and suffering of prison and mental health care. George felt obligated to take Lennie under his wing because Lennie could not survive on his own. Lennie had a very short temper that caused him and George a lot of heartache. It eventually caused George to have to kill Lennie. Although, many say that George made the wrong choice by killing him. In fact, he made the right choice when he killed Lennie because mental health care practice was very cruel and gunshot wounds was inadequate in the 1930s. George spared Lennie from a cruel hard
I believe that George was justified when he shot Lennie because lennie was going to go to prison anyways,Curly would have done the same thing but he would have made Lennie surfer and George did it quick and painless, the book foreshadows what was going to happen at the end of the book.
I’m arguing why George should have killed Lennie in Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.Curley was going to make Lennie’s death painful anyways. Curley was mad about his hand and losing his wife so he thought he would shoot Lennie.”Ill shoot him in the guts”(Steinbeck).Lennie was going to die either way so why not just get it over with.George should have shot Lennie because he may be slower but being slower does not get you out of murder.George should have killed Lennie when he saw Curley’s wife’s dead body because he got nervous and scared for him because George knew what the guys were going to do to him .”I know what I have to do” (Steinbeck) I think the quote proves my point because George knows he is going to have to kill Lennie.Lennie
Although many would argue that George should not had killed Lennie, I would disagree. First off I think that what would had most likely would had happen to Lennie, is he would had been tortured and killed by Curly. This is evident when Curly state's “I’ll kill the son-of-a-bitch myself. I’ll shoot ‘im in the guts” (Steinbeck 92). Being shot in the guts is known as one of the most painful and unrecoverable wounds. Secondly, even if Curly didn’t kill him, he would had been locked in a cage and probably had been beaten up and then rot in jail the rest of Lennie’s life. George even says “Couldn’ we maybe bring him in an’ they’ll lock him up?” (Steinbeck 92), followed by slim saying “We might” (Steinbeck 92). Jails at the times were very cruel
The title of the story is Of Mice and Men. The author of the story is John Steinbeck. Should George have killed Lennie. Yes, I do think that Lennie should have killed lennie because if not he would have been going around killing others and hurting others, Also if he wouldn’t have then they would be out of places to work because he would have been kicked out of everywhere. Also he shouldn’t have because Lennie’s Aunt Clara asked him to keep an eye on him. Yes, I do think that he should have killed him because if not then the other ranch hands would have and had him and it probably wouldn’t be that nice of a death.“If you find him then kill him or I’m going to and it’s not going to be good.” Steinbeck 103. This proves my point because if
Some people think that George shouldn’t have killed Lennie because they think that someone like George wouldn’t kill his best friend Lennie. However nothing good was going to happen after George killed Lennie.
George killing Lennie was justified because he would rather of done it that Curley, Lennie prevented him from settling down and he wanted to end Lennie’s suffering. To start, George himself would have rather killed Lennie. If George had not killed him, then Curley would have. Curley never liked big guys and had the perfect chance to take one out since that one happened to have killed his wife. George knew Lennie for a long time and knew him better than anyone else ever could have.
Secondly, George had to kill Lennie, for he wanted to help Lennie to make his life better. Since Lennie had a mental disorder, he had to avoid talking to people or he would be judged and thought of as crazy because that is how people back in The Great Depression. On page 101 George says, “You… an’ me. Ever’body gonna be nice to you. Ain’t gonna be more trouble.” This means that George didn’t want Lennie to be made fun of or thought of as crazy. Therefore, George killed Lennie so he won't have to struggle through life
Would you do anything for a loved one? Would you even go as far as to kill them? Well George Milton killed his closest friend Lennie at the end of John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men. George never meant any harm to Lennie, George always cared for Lennie. George did this to protect Lennie from others who were trying to find and harm him. George did this out of love and not hate. Therefore, George killing Lennie was justified by the fact that his acts weren’t to harm Lennie. If George wouldn’t have killed Lennie, Lennie could have got much worse.
George decides that he needs to kill Lennie because, since he didn’t know what he was capable of, he killed Curley’s Wife. George should be punished. This is because George cannot just kill someone and get away with it. Lennie shouldn’t have been killed by George because of what he did. It should have been up to the authorities.
Additionally, George was justified in view of the fact that Lennie could have harmed or worse killed someone else. In chapter five Lennie was chilling in the barn with a dead puppy in his hand. He was more concerned with George not letting him tend the rabbits because of what he has done. “Why did you got killed… I didn’t bounce you hard” (Steinbeck 85). Lennie killed mice because the bit him. Lennie killed the puppy because it ended up nipping him, which is what puppy love to do. Lennie loves soft things, in the town of Weed Lennie saw a dress that was soft. When we went to go touch it “... an the girl let’s out a squawk and gets Lennie all mixed up, and he holds on ‘cause that’s the only thing he can think to do” (Steinbeck 41). Since Lennie
George should feel guilty for committing the act himself, and he won’t have to worry about Lennie anymore. One reason George’s killing should be justified is because Lennie is kind of a harmless to George, and sometimes other people. Even though he causes George a lot of trouble he has the best interest in mind for himself
The unique traveling duo of George and Lennie helps add many layers to both characters. George takes care of Lennie because of a promise he made long ago. Lennie would most likely not make it in the world without George. With this being said, was George taking care of Lennie when he decided to put him down? I believe that George made the right decision in killing Lennie because Lennie would have suffered a worse death if Curley reached him, Lennie would almost certainly get into more trouble down the road, and Lennie would almost certainly be separated from George given the circumstances.
Lennie had gotten into trouble like this before, and he and George had had to run away. Lennie had also accidentally killed a few animals on the farm, because he couldn’t control his own strength. But George probably felt that he could not protect Lennie this time, and that running away just wouldn’t work. So he probably thought he had to choose between letting Curly and the farmhands kill Lennie or doing it himself in a quick, painless way so Lennie wouldn’t even know what happened. George decided that the second option was best, so he killed Lennie, after distracting him, with a gunshot behind his
Also, he decided to kill him at his happiest moment, while he was thinking about their plans for their piece of land. Maybe it was a for a good cause to kill Lennie, so he could move on with his life, and also, so he could to pursue his dream. But, yet George knew that if he was to cause any more problems that something bad was going to happen to him. As a result, George prevented Lennie from causing harm to himself or anyone else. What if George wasn’t around ?
