A psychologist named Phillip Zimbardo said, “I 'm saying to be a hero is means you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes always are making a sacrifice. Heroes always take a risk. Heroes are always deviant. Heroes always doing something that most people don 't and we want to change - I want to democratize heroism to say any of us can be a hero.” As a child, I watched cartoons and movies that have protagonist being a hero with superpowers. When in reality heroes don’t have the superpowers like the one in television. Everyone has their own perspective of what a hero is. I never really had a hero to look up to it’s more like a role model or someone whom I look up to. A hero is as an individual or a network of people that take action on behalf of others in need, or in defense of integrity or a moral cause. Heroes take risks and help others without the expectation of material gain. Heroes are people whom we admire or look up to. They are viewed as role models. Heroes’ qualities are having courage, willingness to sacrifice, humility, and wisdom.

Everyone has their own idea of what a hero is and what a hero does. Most people think that guys like superman and batman are heroes because they have incredible superpowers and they are famous people who receive glory. Many people describe heroes as strong and indestructible people, however, heroes are actually not always famous and they are not always the way that society portrays them. In fact, most heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary things and have notable traits for society to follow. Although heroes are mostly overlooked or misinterpreted by many people, a hero is always a courageous, selfless, and persistent person who has the determination to create change for the better.

They don’t have any superpowers or special abilities, but the can reach the heart of others and inspire them with their stories. They grow out of their hardships or help others who have difficulty growing out of their own. Hero’s see everyone as like minded people, instead of focusing on each other’s differences. Three ideas that define a hero are humility, mindset, and selflessness.

Heros are just ordinary people who are extraordinarily selfless, honorable, and strong. They are people we walk by everyday who strive to improve the quality of other people’s lives. A hero is not motivated by dollars but by hope. Hope that they can make their mark on the world and can carry others to a place better than where they reside. Heroes are so much more than people that fly around in capes and fight off villains, heroes can be everyday people that just want to help. Take the movie Hacksaw Ridge for example. In the movie there is a character named Desmond T. Doss, Desmond decides to join the army during WWII as an Army Medic but not only does he want to join the army but he refuses to carry a gun do to his religious beliefs. At first the Army would not let him join unless he used a gun because they all thought he was crazy and did not know how he was going to survive.

What makes a hero? Saving a puppy from a burning building? Or what about being a single mother raising three kids and working two jobs? Both of these could be good candidates for heroes since they both possess the characteristic of strength—not just physical strength, but mental strength. This is one of the most important traits of a hero but it is not the only one. Courage, intelligence, and morality are also necessary in order to really get penciled in to the “hero” category. Being a hero also means doing what’s right almost all the time, even when no one is looking. In The Outsiders, the greasers proved to be the heroes of the story, not the snobby Socs. The three greasers that specifically met my standards of a hero were Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy. All three of these characters show that heroes don’t have to be perfect. My definition of a hero is someone tough, not just physically, but mentally, too. Bravery is also an important factor for being a hero. Another characteristic I see in a hero is the compassion and love someone might show, directly or indirectly, even though they might have a tough life behind what you see.

There are many interpretations of what describes a hero and the actions they take. Whether it's selfless individuals that protect others against harmful entities or powerful figures in costumes that depict moral greatness and power fantasies, everyone has their own vision of what constitutes a hero. Like many of our own thoughts and opinions, these visions often stem from the environment and upbringing of the people that have them. A fantastic example of this aspect of our thoughts is the way George Orwell described a hero. He views a hero as someone who will do whatever they can to change social systems that lack respect for human decency, even if they know it is impossible to create such change.

For instances, Odysseus in the Odyssey, Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit and my mom have those characteristics of heroism.

For an individual to classify themselves as a hero they have to possess special qualities. These include courage, selflessness, humility, patience, and caring. Somebody could not claim that they are a hero if they were not courageous and eager to carry out any task. This goes along with selflessness because a hero should not base their tasks on personal achievement. A hero should never view themselves as more important than others. A hero needs to be patient with others and care about the surrounding people. This is most likely why heroes do what they do because they care for others. The typical stereotype of a hero, is a person that has dashing looks, and goes around with muscles larger than the size of their head. Rather than outward appearances, heroes consist of inward qualities that are hard to find in this century. Being a true hero consists of going down the ‘path less traveled’. A person who works hard and fights for what they believe is right are heroic. They have to overcome challenges and keep pushing forward. These individuals have to be determined to persevere over these obstacles. A hero must be altruistic, they have to help others without expecting anything in return and risk it all to do what they believe is right. It does not matter who you are but what you do. Heroes are people who stand up for what they believe in when no one else take action. An individual who is defined as hero must be altruistic, be able to persevere over challenges, and have determination to fight for what they believe in.

What is a hero? Does someone have to save lives to become a hero? Does he/she need superpowers? Well, a hero can have those qualities, but they are definitely not required. “What is a hero?” is a very subjective question. A hundred people could be asked that question, and a hundred different responses would be given in return. Some common answers might be “A hero is righteous,” or “A hero is always willing to help others.” Ultimately, a true hero should always be willing to stand up for what is right. By standing up for what is right, they should also be prepared to fight against what is not. A hero will also need to have good morals to be able to differentiate from what is right and what is wrong.

What does make a hero a hero? Is it there looks? Alternatively, maybe is it their personality? However, the question is what are those essential qualities that make one a hero? Different people require different heroes to look up to or try to emulate. However, whoever it may be, they all possess certain qualities. My hero is my mother, for the reason that she is selfless, compassion, and courage. That kind of selflessness can often be premeditated, since concentrating on others' needs often winds up helping one accomplish one’s own goals. However, a heroic leader does so without any anticipation of a return. The display and concern show the care one has for others. This can often apparent itself in strong but gentle actions planned to increase the lives of others. Courage and bravery come to mind first when we think of heroism. However, it is difficult to achieve anything truly heroic unless one is up against overwhelming chances. As Nelson Mandela put it, "Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it." These minor acts of heroism rarely attract any notice. A true hero is always sympathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and sympathy to those poorly or in agony. He or she keeps away judgements; that are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that serves others.
