Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget both have theories based off of how children learn. Piaget and Vygotsky both have different views and takes on a child’s language in relation to how they both view learning and intelligence. Piaget’s work is on social factors on how a child thinks and their reasoning. His emphasis is on children as independent operators in cognitive development. Vygotsky’s interest was in language development that was related to a child’s thoughts. Vygotsky thought that language and play, play a duel role. Piaget’s became intrigued on why children gave the wrong answers to questions they were asked. This required logical thinking. First on a social level then on an individual level. Vygotsky's theory on cognitive development depends on the zone of proximal development. On these levels children will engage in social behaviors. Vygotsky wants to explain consciousness as an end product of socialization for children. Vygotsky's main focus was on cognitive development in children. Vygotsky's theory was based off of the thought of what can I do? What can I do with help? And also what I can’t do? The full zone of proximal development depends on a child’s social interaction. “The range of skill that can be developed with adult guidance or peer collaboration exceeds what can be attained alone” (Wertsch, 1985, p.1). Piaget believes that a children’s cognitive development was based off of how a child thinks by using logical thinking. Piaget believed it made a difference and it was important in how children and adults think. Vygotsky's theory on cognitive development is similar to that of Piaget’s because it can be based off of an environmental experience which includes Vygotsky's theory on social interactions with peers and their environment.
