The controversial topic of video game addiction is what I have decided to focus my multi-genre research project on. Although a multitude of people do not even know of the existence of such a problem in today's society, I can assure you that this is becoming an increasingly greater problem effecting people around the world of all ages. Through my multi-genre project, I intend on proving the uselessness and detrimental qualities of playing video games, and I am going to explore some healthy alternatives to such a problematic habit. This is a very important topic to me because I myself used to be absorbed in video games, and through those hours wasted I have accomplished nothing. I am hoping that through this project I may be …show more content…
Most of my research was done online, and I found Wikipedia in particular to be a very useful source for me. All of my online sources were found thanks to Google. I found my book by looking up video games on the online library website, and it happened to be one of the only results that pertained to my research topic of video game addiction. Some of the questions I asked throughout my searching were ?Do violent video games have an impact on the mind?? and ?Are video games addictive??. I asked many of the same questions while searching for information that I asked before starting my research. Throughout my endeavors in discovering more about video games, I did not run into any obstacles because I already knew enough about video games to know what I needed to look up. I would have to say my greatest success in finding research about video games has to be when I found the book Playstation Nation: Protect your child from video game addiction by Olivia and Kurt Bruner. This book contained so much information that opened my eyes to so many more topics that I could delve into and incorporate into my research project. It also helped me to go cold turkey against any future video games.
After reading this book, my whole research topic changed. At first, I was going to do my research topic on the impact of violent video games, but I decided to go on impulse and make a
There have been numerous studies, but none have proven a correlation between poor behavior and violent video games. Source B mentions many studies and researchers that have become “concerned,” but never mentions any concrete evidence of fault in video games and behavior. It specifically recounted of a study by the American Psychological Association that did not find a link between video games and engaging in violent behavior. This link remaining absent takes away much of the argument against video games. In any case, the concerns raised on this segment of the entertainment enterprise are not justified due to a lack of
The rise and increasing popularity of computer gaming as a contemporary leisure phenomenon has become a significant part of many people’s daily lives. PC and game consoles as leisure technologies changed significantly during the last 20 years from simple games with basic graphics to intermediates between reality and fantasy, making it hard to distinguish what is hyperreality and what is not. Graphically ingenious (see Figure 1), with scenes and stories accompanied by realistic music and sounds, nowadays’ games contain 3-dimensional graphics of highly complex content and details, depicting natural human settings and expression of characters with utmost realism. Different platforms and gaming genres, integration of gaming technologies into
Specific Purpose: To inform my COM121 class on how video games are part of peoples lives.
Some questions to support this purpose can focus on the positive aspects of games: do video games improve reaction time, have video games ever been used for educational purposes, and can video games actually improve a person’s social life? Other questions can focus on the negative aspects of games: how common are video game addictions, are video games really the culprit of mass murders, what are the psychological effects of video games on the human mind? Finally the last set of questions can ask how we can solve the common problems people have with games: should there be rehab clinics for video games, should certain people be banned from playing violent video games, is the bouts with aggressiveness people experience come from too much video games, can moderation keep people from experiencing the undesirable side effects of video games? A major question for this topic can ask if video games are really to blame for a person committing a major crime, or if there are other factors
While video games may be a fun distraction, playing them too often, as many people tend to do these days, is unhealthy, uneducational, and possibly even dangerous. The rise of technology over the past few decades has led to countless new ways of communicating and working, as well as countless new ways of distracting oneself from communicating and working. Video games are simply one of these methods of distraction. Although they can be a great way to destress when played every once in a while, the fact that they are now available on a huge variety of different devices, including mobile phones, means that most people now play them every day, multiple times a day. The amount of time, energy, and money people spend on these games is infinite, and can only lead them to another virtual level, rather than taking them anywhere in real life. I believe that there are many benefits to playing video games, but that focusing on them too much cannot be good for anybody.
“Electronic games are now an everyday part of childhood and adolescence” (Olsen, 2010). Considering children and adolescence are our future, parents need to consider and monitor how these electronic games are affecting their child. There are more studies afloat that report the negative affects of video games over the positive effects until recently. Children and adolescents become addicted to video games easily so it is important to monitor what they are playing and how it is affecting them and their character. A recent study on many boys and girls reported why they are
From the past till now, video game never loses its popularity, from Gameboy to Wii, and from NDS to LOL, millions and billions of people are obsessed with this imaginary world. Some of the video games are created for educational purpose, however, most are created for the people who wants to escape from reality. “In a national Harris Poll survey of 1,178 American youths (ages 8-18), ISU Assistant Professor of Psychology Douglas Gentile found nearly one in 10 of the gamers (8.5 percent) to be pathological players.” ("Figure 2f from: Irimia R, Gottschling M (2016) ") Not only the statistic shows the high rate of addiction towards video games, terrible consequences of the addictions are more than enough to be served. For example, an extreme case of an Chinese kid called Xioyi suicide because he lose in one of his game on December 27, 2004; where he left a note that said he wanted “to join the heroes of the game he worshiped.” Video game has the potential to ruin a person’s life, as well as their family, or even the
Many people have differing views on the topic of video games. While some individuals view gaming as positive, others view it in a negative light. Electronic games should not control a person’s life. Instead, individuals should prioritize and focus on objectives that matter in life. Spending time with family, friends, and studying, have countless benefits that gaming cannot provide in a person’s
What I hoped to learn was how video games affect the brain and the body, how they helped and hurt people, and what kinds of video games are the best and worst for you.
The issue of video game violence seems to be a hot topic right now after several shootings have occurred and made a connection to the shooters being video gamers. In looking at past research it is apparent that there seems to large amounts of research that contradict one work to another. Although I would have been interested in conducting a poll of the publics opinion regarding the use of violent video games and their connection to mass shootings I was not able to conduct the research. However, for this paper I chose to conduct a literature analysis to see what research has been conducted and to seek out gaps and themes in this research.
Many young children and teenagers have heard their mother’s incessant plead to get away from the screen and to go outside or pick up a book for once instead. The urge to play “just one more level” before starting that homework or doing those chores can be quite distracting. But are video games really as awful as Mom exclaims or as brutal as those TV ads depict? It turns out that video games can have a strong impact on participants’ lives in both positive as well as negative ways.
Excessive video game playing has been a problem with today’s youth they have had more influences over the youth than ever before. That brings to my attention a question, how do video games affect the youth of our society? Excessive video game playing, especially violent video games, can lead to youth violence, a decrease in academic success and many other negative things. I realize that some parents believe that they can be good for children, I agree but I also disagree in some cases. Some parents allow their children to play video games to keep a social life and to learn how to use strategies. This is true in some cases but not in all cases. For instance, other children that play video games alone and are in their rooms constantly can
The application of video games in present society is thought to improve education worldwide. In a New York Times article by Sam Anderson, “Just One More Game ...”, he informs both positive and negative repercussions. In this article, he introduces Jane McGonigal, an author, and advocate for positive impacts of video games. “McGonigal contends, they are an optimal form of engaging it. In fact, if we could just find a way to impose game mechanics on top of everyday life, humans would be infinitely better off.” McGonigal argues that due to its present impacts on daily life, games integrated into education would improve efficiency, as children are already familiar with how to use them. This, however, is only speculation and does not provide valid and specific evidence for its claim. From scientific research and trustworthy sources, many points can prove this inaccurate claim otherwise. In an article by ProjectKnow, “How Video Game Addiction Treatment Centers Can
When a person thinks of an addiction, substances come to mind: drugs and alcohol. Doctors are now realizing and recognizing behaviors as addictive also. The criteria descriptions are almost mirrored with those of a substance addiction and Kimberly Young, PsD, clinical director of the Center for On-Line Addiction says compulsive gaming meets these criteria. Severe withdrawal symptoms are prevalent with those who are addicted; they can become violent, or depressed (Rauh, 2006). Video gaming is a $66 billion dollar industry. A study produced in 2007 found that almost 12 percent of those who participated, 7,000 people to be exact, were diagnosed as addicted to video games (Flanagan, 2014).
With this paper, I plan to some facts about video game addiction. Life is full of many stages and milestones that everyone must encounter one of the largest and most important ones is the teenage stage of people’s life. During our teen years we usually figure out who we are and who we want to be. Do you want to be the gamer who stays home all day and play video games or go out with friends? Some people would rather spend a beautiful weekend inside playing video games instead of going out. Just like most other things video games can affect relationships with family and friends and it could potential affect your grades. It is understandable that people might not like life in the real world, and the virtual world gives a sort of second chance
