Treaty of Versailles DBQ: Was the Treaty of Versailles fair or unfair? Everyone wants peace but it is not often that it is accomplished, especially between nations. Even though World War 1 was over, disputes between nations did not come to an end, but continued. The Treaty of Versailles was one of many attempts. It was a document that ended World War 1; however, it solely blamed Germany for the war and forced Germany to pay reparations. Furthermore, the treaty was also unfair because Germany did not even attend the meeting, Germany was blamed and humiliated, and they also had to pay everything. The Treaty of Versailles was unfair because Germany did not attend the Paris Peace Conference. In the conference, representatives from the Allied Powers were present and some from other countries (Doc 1) However, no representative of Germany was there. Therefore, they did not even have a say to what their consequences may be or anything in general. They could not defend themselves. This caused them to feel bitter and angry since in the end they were blamed about everything. This later caused World War 2. The treaty was supposed to conclude to peace but peace did not last. …show more content…
Almost all nations desired to completely destroy Germany and make them work almost like slaves (Doc 3). The other nations act as if they had no part or fault in the war when in reality they were part of it just as much as Germany. Great Britain, France, and Italy all wanted revenge and saw this as their opportunity to get it. The treaty caused restrictions to their military and also made Germany lose their territory and colonies. The fault was entirely placed on their shoulders and the weight only became greater with the treaty. Germany was also not the one to start the war but yet were accused of it
The treaty of Versailles was a treaty signed at the end of World War I by Germany and the Allies. United States, Great Britain, France, and Italy negotiated the treaty at the peace conference held in Versailles beginning January 18, 1919. The treaty reduced Germany’s armed forces to very low levels and prohibited Germany from possessing certain kinds of weapons, it also established Germany’s liability for reparations. The treaty was supposed to ensure peace and help Europe recover from the war. In my opinion the treaty did not help with any of those two subjects.
The Treaty had what is referred to as the War Guilt Clause, which laid all the blame for the war on Germany (Doc D). Because of this, Germans despised the Treaty, and viewed it as "an atrocious injustice, an evil thing which must be destroyed" (Doc D). They wanted revenge against those who implemented the clauses, and in their opinion, unfairly blamed Germany. Hitler was accepted by Germans because he promised to destroyed the Treaty by violating its clauses and restoring Germany to it's former glory. Hitler gave back the pride and respect Germans had for their country, which the Treaty if Versailles had
This treaty helped cause WWII by treating Germany harshly. This treatment can be seen in several different decisions that were made in the treaty. Since Germany was treated severely in regarding the matters of the treaty, it helped provoke World War II instead for preventing one.
The Treaty of Versailles was a major event in the 1920’s that was largely responsible for the events to follow, including the rise of Hitler and World War 2. Woodrow Wilson came up with a fourteen point plan of how to end the war with fairness and lasting peace. Germany was willing to accept the consequences because they trusted the treaty would be based off of Wilsons’ plan. Unfortunately for Germany and her allies, there were meetings with the four main allie leaders at Versailles to determine the final terms of the treaty without them. These men were determined to punish Germany, excluding Wilson, and hold them completely responsible for World War One. The consequences for Germany were unreasonable and unfair because Germany was not able
The treaty of Versailles helps cause World War II by punishing Germany. Germany felt that they are being treated unfairly. The unfairness of the Treaty of Versailles causes Germany to fight back for they had lost much of their territory, had made their military size decrease, had to pay reparations for their damage, and for it causes the people of Germany Psychological loss of pride and humiliation.
The inability to enforce the Treaty of Versailles played an important role in the starting of World War II. The weight of enforcing the rules of the Treaty was put all on the shoulders of Britain and France. It was hard to impose because some major powers did not sign the Treaty like the United States and the Soviet Union. The loss of the support from major powers had affected the Treaty of Versailles, because it made it harder to know what Germany was doing, and how to take action to prevent it. Many politicians also felt that the Treaty was too harsh on Germany, and that some rules on the Treaty should be overturned. Germany in World War I was blamed for everything, lost a lot of land and was restricted from doing many things. When the Treaty was created, the terms were not fair, and Hitler realized this and wanted to get back what was `rightfully` his. When Hitler began obtaining territories everyone was fine with it, because it was understandable since Germany`s restrictions in the Treaty
The Treaty of Versailles ended the First World War between Germany and the allied powers. Because Germany had lost the war, the treaty was very harsh and unforgiving against Germany. Germany was forced to “accept the responsibility” of starting the war and had to pay the allies a whopping 6,600 million pounds, which at the time was a staggering amount of money.
The Treaty of Versailles was intended to be a peace agreement between the Allies and the Germans, instead with the harsh end terms for Germany, it created political and economic chaos in Germany. By the end of the First World War, Germany had surrendered and signed a peace agreement. The task of forming a peace agreement was now in the hands of the Allies. In December of 1918, the Allies met in Versailles to start on the peace settlement. The main countries and their representatives were: The United States, Woodrow Wilson; Great Britain, David Lloyd George; and France, George Clemenceau. It had seemed that making peace agreement would be fairly simple. Once they started, the Allies began having different ideas about the wording of the
Ultimately, all the nations associated with this peace treated came to the conference with different aims. Each country had suffered differently in the war; therefor, their desires were dictated by the extent of their suffering. Ultimately, the Treaty of Versailles was created to make Germany obligated to pay for the damage they caused in the war, give up their colonies and its armed forces. The treaty also abolished Germany’s air forces and practically redrew the map of Europe. This peace treaty was biased against Germany and caused anger and humiliation throughout their
The restrictions imposed by the Versailles treaty created a social and economic depression in Germany, with widespread bitterness among its people. The allies placed a huge burden on Germany to pay for the cost of World War I that had just occured. This act alone essentially spelled doom for the Wiemar Republic and a peaceful Germany. The people of Germany felt the Treaty was an insult to their honour, and that they were not the only guilty player in the war. Also, by their
The Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, was a peace settlement between the Allied Powers and Germany and it virtually ended the war. The treaty forced Germany to accept full responsibility for the war and peacefully cooperate with the reparations they were asked to pay. Germany was required to make territorial concessions along its eastern and western borders. Being the subject of dispute between France and Germany for a very long time, the ceding of Alsace-Lorraine back to France was a very important event. Along with the land concessions Germany was also forced to pay a great deal of money putting their already failing economy in a downward spiral. Many believe that because the conditions in the Treaty of Versailles were so punitive it laid the foundation for the uprising of Nazi power in Germany, in other words the second World
The Treaty of Versailles was the treaty formed at the end of World War I, which many historians say caused the next major war, WWII. The reason for this, they say, is because of too many harsh
The Treaty of Versailles was introduced after WWI, the purpose of this treaty was to start a Peace treaty with Versailles and the Germans who also had to respect and follow what the treaty said which meant that the blame had to be accepted without argument, a reparation had to be paid, The German army wasn’t allowed many things and throughout the country territory
The treaty of Versailles required germany to accept full responsibility for World War One. The treaty also forced germany to disarm its military, and narrow it down to nothing but what could be used for defense. Many of the Germans saw the treaty as unfair and shameful.
After the devastation and loss of the First World War, George Clemenceau (the Prime Minister of France), Woodrow Wilson (the President of America) and David Lloyd George (the Prime Minister of Britain) worked together to construct a treaty that would prompt cooperation between all nations to supposedly ensure freedom and prosperity. The British, French and American public wanted Germany to pay reparations because they blamed them for starting the war and the devastating amount of death and destruction it caused. So, as to cater for the public’s expectations, ‘the Big Three’ created a treaty that controlled Germany’s military forces, territory and colonies, reparations and war guilt. This treaty was named ‘The Treaty of Versailles’, after where it was signed, and was based on the Covenant of The League of Nations.
