Travel Fears After reading the article, one point that most caught my attention was how the writer said that there are many more nice people in the world than there are bad people. I find it unjust on how humans tend to emphasize on the bad acts of other people rather than the kindness shared and kept in the minds of the generous. Another interesting point that the writer concluded the article by saying how much of an experience you would lose than gain if you stayed at home. I like this idea that you have to get up and attack life. Live life to its full potential and live in the moment because you will lose much more than you gain if you stay complacent. One of the things that scares me about traveling to another country would be the different
“The most beautiful people we have known are those who have known defeat, known suffering, known struggle, known loss (...) These people have an appreciation, a sensitivity, and an understanding of life that fills them with compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern. Beautiful people do not just happen” (Elisabeth Kubler-Ross). Compassion, gentleness, and a deep loving concern make mankind beautiful, but it also makes it defenseless . When one has concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others, he takes sacrifices, risks, and lives with uncertainty. When man is compassionate, he lives a vulnerable life. Love and compassion bring out the beauty in mankind, but they can also bring out its weaknesses. Because of man’s compassion, he
Every country has a culture that is unique to that area, and in that culture are different things that are considered normal. There are certain rules to obey and norms that are just expected to be followed by observing other people. Going to a different country can be shocking because social norms in one area may be completely different from the social norms of another area, leaving the visitor feeling confused and out of their comfort zone. One example of a social norm in the United States is leaving a tip after eating at a restaurant, usually around fifteen percent, but in some countries tipping is not expected and can even be offensive.
Sam Roberts, the New York Times journalist, published an article in 2010 notably named “A Decade in Fear”. The article addresses the Red Scare back during McCarthyism when Americans were afraid of other Americans due to the fear of Communism after World War II. During the age of McCarthyism, many Americans would not associate themselves with “Un-American” activities, Americans were too paranoid that any American could be a Communist. This brought the issue of being addressed and labeled as a Communist which created the potential of never being employed or fired from your work entirely, family members would be isolated from the rest of society for the accusation. In the article “A Decade in Fear”, Victor Navasky commented on how the American
Another way I feel I can take this article and relate to it and apply it is as a future parent. I want to learn from this encounter Lahey is having with Marianna’s mom. She is a mom who has the best of intentions, but it does not always come across the most effectively. I hope that when the time comes, I will be able to be a support system for my child, not the source of their struggles. I want to be a self-monitoring parenting and take inventory of my thoughts, words, and actions. Children are so intuitive and they can pick apart what you do and say, so as a parent you have to be very cautious. I aim to be the kind of parent that checks in with my child(ren) and make sure my message and whatnot are coming across in a healthy manner to help them, not hurt them. I want to be the parent that respects my child’s individuality and demeanor. I want to meet them wherever they are, not where I wish they were. I want to have enough confidence in them to let them work out their own struggles and problems without feeling the need to step in. Because that can lead to a toxic cycle. As a parent I want to take this kind of advice. I want to instill a good set of values in my kids and make sure they have a positive and long term concept of what success and achievement looks like. That is how I potentially relate to this article as a future parent.
To start, one article that really changed my perspective was the Nacirema one. When I first read it, I thought those people the author was referring to acted strangely. Even though the author got his point across in an exaggerated way, it really made me realize how unaware people can look when judging others for not doing “normal” things, when in reality, the things those people consider “normal”, may be strange for others.
The article is very sad to read since it is the reality of what some people actually go through and are still going through at the moment. Its also amusing how they were all willing to open up to complete strangers about their personal lives. Like what drove these homeless people
Your travel experience with a friend who has Alzheimer's disease can be a pleasure when the appropriate managed and detailed plans are in place before the trip begins. Before departure, supply your family with your planned stops and expected times of arrival at each destination.
When society blinds people to believe that what it begs of them is ideal but the yearning to lead themselves elsewhere persists, they must decide to either retaliate by pursuing their own aspirations or abandon those desires and retreat to masking certain aspects of their personalities; the latter often prevails. The action of concealing genuinity is often a response to fear derived from societal exclusion, or not ‘fitting in.’ A system of classification as described by Karl Albrecht in his article, “The (Only) Five Basic Fears We All Live By,” places every possible fear into at least one of five categories: Extinction, Mutilation, Loss of Autonomy, Separation, or Ego-death. Characters of a Bronx Masquerade, Nikki Grimes’ novel, demonstrate
One last example of fear causing a positive change in society is based not off of violence and terrorist attacks, but instead based on the fear of contracting a horrific disease. When the first case of Ebola was announced panic struck not just in America but internationally as well. This deadly disease caused mass hysteria and panic. In the article “The Fear Equation”, Specter explains how just one diagnosed case of Ebola caused a whole city to panic and prepare for the worst. The fear of contracting Ebola has allowed scientists to focus on finding a cure. “Advances in molecular and synthetic biology have begun to provide a sophisticated understanding of the genetic composition of viruses. We are increasingly able to make vaccines by assembling
Besides the shopping, food, and historic buildings, I would like to be able to discover the little differences between my country and that one I could only learn from being there. From doing some research I learned that dogs are more welcome in public places than they are in the United States. As an animal lover, this sounds like paradise to me. The cars and streets are also smaller in size and jaywalking isn’t much of a big deal. Another small difference is taken in the homes, the bathrooms are separated into two rooms, one being the toilet, the other being just the
What is that fear which grips everyone as you slowly approach old age. It is the fear of free mobility, the fear of lack of ability to move at free will and to effortlessly do everything all by yourself. Who else wants to live a life full of independent activity and escape the embarrassment of leaning on others for every single activity. When you glance through the past, to start thinking about your young age, wherein you could run, walk or saunter about freely, the current scary situation of putting a ceiling on the mobility makes you feel gloomy. Shrug off your worries of restricted mobility and carry on to enjoy the same freedom of movement by bringing home a state-of-the-art chair from the amazing range of mobility power chairs. Whether
In Leo Tolstoy’s 1886 novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich, the main character, Ivan, tirelessly works to climb the social ladder and keep up with the expected appearance of someone of his status, damaging his relationships with his family and friends along the way (Tolstoy 1886). Once Ivan is close to dying, he realizes that he has lived an artificial and wrong life. He learns that an authentic life is marked by compassion and sympathy, not self-interest (Tolstoy 1886). To add to this, having compassion for others aids in “building up the general sense of community in society as a whole” (Hollenbach 2002, 196). With this sense of community built up, people start to work for the common good, which leads to the well-being of everyone society (Hollenbach 2002, 197). MBK and programs like it facilitate this assessment by empowering people to be the most productive they can
Here resides reality. We seem overloaded with the negatives in our world, but in spite of this, no; because of this, it is all the more important to appreciate the beauty beheld. It has become easy to view the world cynically and with contempt, but our world is one of complimentary situations: for every sorrowful tear shed, a hearty laugh bubbles over, for every purse stolen, an old woman is helped across the street, for every last breath taken, a mother gazes lovingly at her newborn child, for every heart broken, there is someone falling head over heels. That is the beauty of humanity, we are a dynamic species capable of the most unspeakable atrocities, but also the most breathtaking generosities. When looking out at the thorny fields of reality, one is tempted to dismiss it as hostile and appalling, but with a bit of effort and patience you may find that the thorns bushes sprout beautiful
But to help people in poverty and to do my part to make it better. The paper talks about how even people in poverty view others in poverty differently based on whether they work, where they work, how they were raised and many other different things. We are all guilty of judging people who we deem to be lower than us. But instead of judging them, we need to see what we can do to help them. They may be doing the things that they are doing for example, working 3 low paying jobs, not going to college, dropping out of high school, etc. not necessarily because they want too, but because it was what had to be done to make ends meet for their
Charles Bukowski’s work displays how the people are living with a lack of happiness. People are just not being nice to people, no matter who you are. “People just are not good to each other one on one. The rich are not good to the rich the poor are not good to the poor.” By treating people poorly,
