Traditional Students Vs Nontraditional Students

Being a non-traditional student, I have the opportunity to attend school while also pursuing a career in Information Technology (IT). Within the field of IT there are many avenues to explore ethics depending on the type of business that is being supported, or what the technical specialty may be. For instance, if the business operates in a medical environment that treats patients, there are privacy concerns, and ethical standards that must be followed. The same can be said for the financial community, and education. While the breadth of Information Technology and the available specializations are vast, perhaps even more impressive are the amount of trust and ethical burden placed on the Information Technology professional.

Despite that the transfer and non-traditional students aren’t traditional students, they are in fact new and might not know every building. It would be my job to help them get situated. I will treat them like any other freshman student and provide my full attention to their needs. A transfer student may have transferred from another school in the country and being there for them will make the transition will be easier. They are different from traditional freshman even if they are first year students, they might’ve know their old campus perfectly well, but it would be my responsibility to make sure they can remember our campus as well. School-related stress has its roots in many different places. On a national scale, surveys and research have in fact confirmed that “school-related pressures were the primary source of stress for the majority of younger and older children” (qtd. in Blazer 2). Not long ago, kindergartens were places for children to play and learn basics, like the alphabet, but now all of it has changed to teaching kids about test taking, doing reading/writing exercises, and even homework (Blazer 4). While working at Virginia College, which is a nontraditional college. I had similar issues and concerns. I found with my students. I was able to utilize my special educational background and skills in accommodating their needs and providing a variety of educational resources to assist them during their education process.

Students in higher or older grades are prone to having a much higher stress level than students and learners of a lower grade. The college student population in the past decade has seen a huge shift from the traditional college student, typically 18 years old and recent high school graduate, to nontraditional college students, including: part time, independent, older adults, and parent college students. Not only are these nontraditional college students faced with the same concerns, struggles, and difficulties as traditional college students but they also have additional responsibilities and struggles that a traditional college student won’t have. At Preston High School students and teachers were surveyed on stress levels from each schedule. They were also surveyed on which schedule they thought was more effective for learning. A consensus between all of the students and teachers agreed that the block schedule was more effective for learning (8). They also all agreed that an eight period day proved significantly more stressful when compared to their amount of stress in a four period day (8).

I started my life as a foreign student in 2009, and earned my bachelor degree in kinesiology with an emphasis on health science at California State University, San Marcos in 2015. Generalized anxiety is a problem that the United States faces nationwide. As we grow older and move into educational settings that are more taxing, anxiety becomes more prevalent. Today, college students are facing more stress than ever before. They are constantly pushed to be the best they can be, to be in the most extracurricular activities they can be in, and to attend the best schools possible. All of these goals and high expectations lead students to be harder on themselves, which makes other aspects of their life fall by the wayside, leading to high levels of stress and pressure.

The trends I see in my transcript are every 1st semester I do poorly but every 2nd semester I'm doing so much better. The easiest class I have time with is history because it's so interesting and it really grabs my attention and I feel obligated to pay attention. The hardest class I have time with would be math because sometimes I don't understand it and I fall behind and I feel lost so I don't try anymore and lose track of my assignments. None of these trends are caused by social problems or my own problems. They are just my habits of school learning.

A very important factor of stress is school. School can cause a lot of stress. "One of the greatest sources of pressure is school. Nontraditional student numbers continue to rise on college campuses and few institutions meet the mental health needs for this special group of students (Carney-Crompton & Tan, 2002). It is the purpose of this study to examine both the stressors (i.e. triggers of the stress response) and perceived stress levels between traditional and nontraditional students.
