Social Media: The Downfall Nisha Abraham Sullivan University ENG 204: Advanced Writing July 11, 2013 Abstract Social Media is affecting our society in a negative way. From being the number one cause of divorce, ruining people’s careers, and being a haven for teen suicides, many misfortunes arise due to social media. People may not notice its damaging side effects yet it is slowly but surely proving detrimental to all involved in the game. By taking a step back and maintaining self-control, any human being immersed in the frenzy of social media can enjoy its perks without getting caught up in the whirlwind of unfortunate events. Private information that was previously segregated now becomes easily accessible to employers, colleagues, recruiters, and clients, among other perhaps unintended audiences” (Abril, 2012, para. 4). Yes, most social media sites attain privacy settings but one must always remember there are hiccups in everything on the internet and no guarantees leaks will not occur. As much as social media has managed to ruin our society, it plays a positive role for the public as well. Social media allowed people to use their networks as a form of reaching out to old friends and family across the world. With America being known as the melting pot of the world, our society has several people with family on the other side of the Earth. With social media in effect, this permits people to stay in touch with long lost loved ones and keep ties tight. Not only has it sanctioned friends and family to keep in touches but has granted people to relocate birth parents and unknown family members as well. Yes, social media has failed our society greatly but there is always a rainbow somewhere after a rainy day. Social media can play a positive role by bringing people back together. Even though the world may seem small, we have a larger community than most can see with their eyes. The internet blinds people from the dark abyss of deceit, lies, and secrets but it is gradually
Social media as a whole has benefit our society in a number of different ways. In the essay Is Google Making Us Stupid?, author Nicholas Carr felt that technological is taking other our ability to function independently. Which is somewhat true but I for one disagree. I feel that the world of technology has had a positive impact on us, by allowing us to step out of our comfort zone and explore new world possibilities. Such as a new form of communication and the ability to work more efficiently as well as expressing our creativity.
Social media has many positive effects on our society. Facebook and Twitter can be one prime example of a positive affect on social media. Through Facebook we can generally use it to keep our family and friends posted on how we are doing. For example I remember when Facebook became so popular during the time of Hurricane Katrina. During that time of devastation we were not able to communicate through telephone services, cell phone service, and beepers because all communication services were down. And at that time if you had access to a computer with Internet services we were able to communicate, post pictures and videos of each other by using the Facebook website. This is one of the positive examples of social
The effects of the internet on modern society have been incredible. There is little knowledge that cannot be found in a relatively short time through a search query. People from all over the world can communicate more easily in real time. Social media gives the average person a potentially endless audience and promotes expression, both artistic and political. There is however, a negative side to social media which creates injustice and gives rise to a mob mentality. As a society we had better start looking at this problem before it is too late.
Plus, social media does such a good job at connecting people from different places, and different cultures, for example, if you live California you can talk to a family member and friends, living in Canada. This can be great for our society because it can bring people from different cultures closer, so you can learn about more agriculture differences. This can teach some people about different religions and opinions, so it can educate society. Furthermore, social media is good for our society because it can also be great for large organization arranging plans. social media does such a great at arranging organizations that nobody would think of using anything else.
Social media like Facebook still helps the society and other people. The author Nicole Ellison writes in her article Is My Space Good For Society that “I believe the benefits provided by social network sites such as facebook has made us better off as a society and as individuals”. What the author is saying is that facebook is making our society better as a whole and to all of us.
Have you ever wondered how life would be without social media? Would we be able to maintain communications with family, friends, and co-workers? Without social media, how could we impact the world and influence people? Would it be possible to unite people in times of need? There are many questions about what kind of impact social media has on the world. People are always trying to assess the impact of social media on society. “Social media remains new enough to receive credit and blame for a lot of things- good and bad- that are frequently overblown” (Lowrey). I’m arguing that social media makes a positive change on the world, because it connects people together, enables influence, and helps unite people in times of need.
There is no denying that the expansions of the World Wide Web and social media have skyrocketed in the last few years. It all started with the birth of MySpace for Generation Z in 2003. It then happened again later in 2004, when Mark Zuckerburg created the most commonly known and used Facebook, which then led to the launch of Twitter in 2006. Ultimately, what all of this is saying, is that the effects of social media have impacted the lives of many since 2003. All of these social sites piggyback off of one another and it has created a nation that has become dependent on the use of social media. People are using social media as a way to get their news, instead of actually watching the news. Instead of
Social media can provide many benefits that, for the most of us, could not live without. For instance, could you imagine not being able to see your Aunt Karen’s recipe for homemade pecan pie? What about not being able to see your friend Lindsey’s acai bowl she had for breakfast on her instagram? We would not experience those things without social media, that’s one of the reasons we value it so much. Now days, everyone has social media accounts from the president to even dogs. Certainly it is safe to say that social media has impacted our society.
In 1971, social media came into existence solely to serve the purpose of providing efficient and speedy communication. The goals for social networking was made for simpler reasons such as business networking. The social network bloomed into much more, it no longer just served the purpose of communication, but as a venue for entertainment. Throughout the years people have been blind to the benefits of social media but do not see how it taxes our growth. The supposed “thrills” of social media have created a lack of emotional connection, increased bullying, decreased face to face communication skills, and created a lack of privacy.
Social Media has all different types of platforms created for positive reasons. There is so much you could do on the internet now, that you could not do before. People are so use to hearing the negative about social media, but really you can use it to empower
Social media is a new and upcoming part of technology. It is so state-of-the-art that researchers have only recently started noticing the effects and the true impact that it has on society. Unfortunately, social media has created a negative impact on society. Social media can truly impact one’s personal psychological thoughts, ability to perform work tasks, and capability to create relationships with others.
The first thoughts that come to mind for many people regarding social media are quite unfavorable. Profiles on Facebook, tweets on Twitter, and photos on Instagram all tend to have a negative connotation because they are typically associated with isolation, narcissism, and mental illnesses. The impacts of social media are greatly determined by how a person uses it. While one person may lose themselves in the online world that social media creates, another may greatly benefit through meeting new people and learning about new topics, such as other cultures, political views, religions, etc., that can be introduced into their real lives outside of their online lives. Even though social media can be seen as a more disadvantageous contribution to society due to the loneliness and isolation it may cause, social media allows for a greater connection to the social and intellectual worlds. While social media provides a platform that amplifies social and intellectual isolation, it more importantly allows for people to connect to others and learn about different perspectives when used correctly.
Social media has been around for some time now, being helpful to many people around the world. There are plenty of ways people use social media and there are many different sites to use. People rely on social media to stay current on day-to-day events, remain close to friends and family, meet new people, and even to avoid boredom on days that seem endless. Many people rely on it for information regarding current situations and to keep up with other people’s lives. It can come in many forms and can be used on a variety of gadgets like our phones, computers, laptops, tablets, and gaming consoles. It can include dating sites, social sites, and sites that gives updates on current news around the globe. Although it may seem beneficial for many, it can also lead to physical and psychological harm for the people who use it. Social Media is a dangerous, addicting artificial world that is causing physical, emotional, and psychological harm to people in our society.
With connection lost and self-worth diminished, social media has played a major role in the downfall of humanity. The advancement of social media is contributing to the rise of mental health problems and unauthenticity in relationships.
Using social media has both positive and negative impacts on our society. Acceptance of social media in our daily lives is seen as fun but also necessary. Some of the positive implications of social include promoting awareness of specific causes, government, advertising businesses and helping foster friendships between individuals who may have never met without social networking (Shellabarger, 2016). Some of the negative implications of social media are cyber-bullying, lack of privacy and a false sense of connection (Jung, 2016).
