Touching Spirit Bear and The Last Dog on Earth are both stories of young men in worlds of violence and turmoil, one caused by inner conflict, and one in a broken world. Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, and The Last Dog on Earth, by Daniel Ehrenhaft, are similarly compelling tales of young men who overcome their struggles and forge or repair connections with others. These stories focus on the shared themes of anger, and family, and contrasting themes of responsibility, and connections with nature, the self, and society. Touching Spirit Bear, and The Last Dog on Earth, despite having many similarities, aim to convey fundamentally different messages.
Anger is a major theme for both Cole, in Touching Spirit Bear, and Logan, in The Last

As a result of this, Logan is sent to boot camp and separated from Jack, and each of them running away to find the other causes their injuries and Jack’s death. In the ending of the book, Logan reconciles with his father, makes peace with his step-father, and they all unite to mourn Jack. In each of these books, a conflict with family causes the main character to struggle, and the conflict is resolved when the main character reunites with a parent. Responsibility is a theme that is carried throughout both books, but used in extremely diverse ways. Touching Spirit Bear is a story about forgiveness and healing, and Cole has to take responsibility for his past actions, and on improving himself emotionally. He has to forgive his father, the people around him, the Spirit Bear, and most importantly he has to forgive himself. Cole also takes responsibility for helping Peter heal from Cole’s beating, emotionally, because Peter is suicidal. Cole tells Peter, “’My dad has beaten me my whole life,’ he explained. ‘But I know now he never meant to hurt me. He was beaten by his father, and that’s all he knew.’ Cole swallowed a big lump that had formed in his throat. ‘I learned to forgive,’ he said. ‘Not just others, but also myself.’” (Mikaelsen, 214). The Last Dog on Earth, in comparison, is a coming of age story, where Logan must learn responsibility through order. His step-father Robert, through getting him a
I’ve never committed a crime, but author Ben Mikaelsen made me feel as if I was right there in the library waiting for my final judgement for beating a poor little kid. The book “Touching Spirit Bear” and its sequel “The Ghost of Spirit Bear” are both books written by novelist Ben Mikaelsen about two boys and their intertwined life. The first book takes place when teen delinquent Cole Matthews beats up a boy at school named Peter for telling on him. Peter’s injury leads to a permanent speech impediment and because of this Cole goes to jail. When Cole’s probation officer, Garvey, tells about a tribal version of punishment called Circle Justice, which is where the two people involved in the crime must heal together, and move forward from their quarrel, Cole jumps at the idea to get out of jail. When this doesn’t work they decide to send Cole to an Alaskan island, which Peter is eventually sent to. Eventually they become friends and they get past their problems. It is the next book where they face challenges of going back to school and fitting in.
I had the same feelings when I read the back of the book. I truly enjoyed the novel. The description and detail of the bear mauling was intense. This story shows that children are a product of their environment. Cole's parents were alcoholics and his mother wouldn't / couldn't defend him against the constant beatings from his father. I felt so sorry for Cole but at the same time got so angry with his behavior. I believe everyone can change regardless of what environment they were brought up in and Cole proved that in the story. It is weird how the circle of

In Touching Spirit Bear, by Ben Mikaelsen, Cole Matthews, the protagonist, is a troublemaker. He always has been. But, when he smashes Peter Driscal’s head into the concrete sidewalk, he ends up having to make a decision; prison time, or a year on a remote Alaskan island. But, that’s not the only crime he has done. This leads to me seeing him as a sociopath. Sociopaths tend to lie, break laws, act impulsively, and lack regard to the safety of themselves and others, all of which, he does.
I read the book Ghost Of Spirit Bear, which is the sequel to Touching Spirit Bear. I decided I wanted to read this book because I enjoyed Touching Spirit Bear. There are amazing conflicts and themes in this series, it truly inspires me.
In the book Touching Spirit Bear nobody cares for Cole. On page 33 Cole said to Garvey “ “ They don’t care if im dead or alive.”” If Coles parents really cared for him they would want alive. On page 33 Cole also thought to himself. “ He laughed at all the times he was beaten by his drunken father, or been ignored by his drunken mother.” This shows that Coles parents do not care for him because if his parents cared for him then they would have loved him more and not beat him and give him time. And on page 6 Cole thought “ They did not care what happened to him.” This proves that nobody cared for him he was talking about the counselors and Garvey because as Cole said “ They are just passing the buck.” and the people are just doing
In the book, Touching Spirit Bear, written by Ben Mikaelsen, the protagonist Cole has decided to carve a totem pole after being sentenced on the island for a second time. While Cole was on the island he had been confronted by several animals, including the one that would forever change his life. This totem pole represents healing for Cole as he was learning to heal others. For this assignment the four animals that I choose to represent were an otter, spider, swan, and Bear.
The grizzly bear is a metaphor for a problem encountered in life. The three options used to rationalize what to do when encountering a bear also parallel to what to do in a tough situation. When faced with a problem, everyone has a different rationalization to deal with it. The options are a constant that can be applied to any circumstance in life: run away, confront it or sit aside and wait. What we do in tough situations directly correlates to our response in previous life experiences. In the past, these tough situations were big questions that made us wonder the typical “why did this have to happen to me?” Tilley refers to these as defining moments.
Throughout the book the dense teen makes very foolish remarks. For example, at the very beginning of the book, Cole robbs a hardware store. This is foolish but what he does after is even more… HE BRAGS ABOUT IT AT SCHOOL! Also, when Cole is on the island he forms the idea that he will swim from the island he is on to the next closest on and when he reaches the island he will rest and then keep repeating this until he gets to the mainland. Although the water is cold, Cole is inexorable. What brings him back is the tide. The swimmer doesn’t realize it but he is still in the same stop. After Cole gets back from his “refreshing” swim, he sees the spirit bear. The 700 pound black bear, that , bothers Cole because it defied him. (I mean if you were a 700 pound spirit bear you probably wouldn’t be afraid of a scony 15 year-old in his tighty-whities.) Since it bothered Cole so much he tried to kill the bear but, instead got mauled so hard he was minutes away from death. Cole’s foolishness is from two things… rage and
Anger can get to people, and that happened to Cole Matthews the main character in the book Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen, cole has a history of hurting or beating up people because of the way his dad beats him and his mom never pitches in to help. When he gets told on by Peter Driscoll, a freshman, tells on cole when he sees cole break into a hardware store cole gets in trouble and is mad at peter so he beats him up. Peter gets very injured. Cole is then sent to alaska as part of circle justice. Among this cole learns many lessons like how to forgive anger, honesty, and the circle of healing.
Touching Spirit Bear is about a teenager named Cole Matthews. Cole Matthews lives in Minneapolis he has anger issues that may have been caused because his dad beat him up and mother doesn't stand up for him. Cole Matthews gets himself into a lot of trouble .About a week after Cole robbed a hardware store without getting caught . A guy named Peter Driscal tattled on him and told the police all about the robbery . This made Cole very upset causing him to push Peter into the sidewalk making his head bleed and repeatedly kicking and punching Peter. So after the Peter incident Cole had to decide if he should go to jail for 2 years or 1 year in the circle of justice which could end up being worse than the 2 years in jail if he really doesn't want
Touching Spirit bear is a great book. I would recommend this book because it was that great of an book! Touching Spirit Bear gives so much detail. People need to read this book, it will not disappoint you with the thought of the story.
The chapter started with Cole still lying down on the ground with a broken arm, pelvis, and rib. Today, Cole’s blood was running fast than the streaming rain until the bear approached him. The bear sniffed at Cole as if he had a strong desire to know something about Cole. As the bear stayed motionless, Cole was 100 percent sure that this gigantic beast would kill him. Strangely, Cole was not scared of the bear anymore. After the fear was gone, Cole decides to rub his shoulder so he could feel the warmth. Suddenly, the bear moves and proceeds his way to the bay.
Hence, Cole acts out because of his anger. He beat up a kid named Peter because he told on him. He blames people for not doing everything they could for him, even though he doesn’t appreciate it. When he first saw the spirit bear, he yelled, “You maggot, I’ll kill you”, even when he should be afraid. The source of his anger starts with his parents who are both alcoholics. His dad beats him, and his mom acts like he
The theme of the novel The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night-Time is being brave enough to do what one thinks is best. An example of the theme from the novel is when Christopher travels to London alone to live with his mother. The quote, “Which meant I had to go to London to live with Mother. And I could do it by going on a train,” presents to readers that Christopher is able to quickly make a brave decision. The theme is also displayed while Wellington bleeds from his wounds and Christopher holds him in his arms. Christopher explains, “I pulled the fork out of the dog and lifted him into my arms and hugged him,”. Even though the dog is bleeding on Christopher, he does not seem to mind. This is because he wants the dog to feel comfortable
