Atticus says "She is the victim of cruel poverty and ignorance, but I cannot pity her: she is white. She knew full well the enormity of her offense, but because her desires were stronger than the code she was breaking, she persisted in breaking it"(Lee 207). Atticus is a civil white man with two kids named Scout and Jem. Atticus is a lawyer trying to defend a black man from being put in prison his name is Robinson accused of raping a white women and even though there is little evidence he is still brought to court. No matter what year it is people are gonna be judged based on what's on the outside their skin their appearance. That is one reason why the book should not be banned because people need to understand what the world was once like in the 1930's and it may not be the prettiest thing to read but it's something people should know. 2 Second, To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned in public schools because The words in the book are not trying to offend the reader there trying to tell and story and illustrate what it was like back in the 1930s. "Scout, I’m tellin‘ you for the last time, shut your trap or go home—I declare to the Lord you’re gettin’ more like a girl every day!” (Lee 53). This is significant because it shows that the book is trying to draw a picture in the reader's mind about what it was like in the 1930's. That people were racist and sexist it was just something that people did back then it's what most people were born into. Because when your surrounded by mean people you become one of those people eventually. The book is drawing a picture is the reader's mind about what life was like in the 1930's showing the reader that the world was
f. Atticus feels that the adults have made the world the way that it is and the children have to learn to live in that world. They can’t hide from it and need to be exposed to it as early as possible.
Because of offensive language and ideas that are represented in the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, it has been banned in many school libraries and lessons. One of the main reasons that it was banned in school is because of offensive words like the n-word and also because of the fact that the plot is centered around rape. One of the school board members, Kenny Holloway, said, “We can teach the same lessons with other books.” Many people agree with Holloway’s opinion, saying that the same ideas that are represented in To Kill A Mockingbird could be taught with a less controversial book. However, other people say that students are tough enough to handle the story. While many people don’t think that this book is appropriate for school, some people

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee has been challenged/banned countless times since it’s original publication in 1960. The reasoning people could have behind banning it is that they feel that the racism, language and subject matter in the book is offensive, inappropriate, immoral and that it encourages and condones such things. To Kill a Mockingbird takes place in Maycomb, a small town in Alabama, during the depression from 1935-1937, and is told from the perspective of a little girl named Scout. In the book Scout’s father Atticus teaches her and her brother Jem many valuable lessons. The things Atticus teaches Scout and Jem are things we all need to know. To Kill a Mockingbird is an inspirational book that teaches valuable moral values,
There has been much controversy over whether or not the novel To Kill a Mockingbird should be banned or not. This novel teaches students about the racism and prejudice of the 1930’s resulting in why the world is the way it is, as well as many important life lessons, therefore it should be continued to be taught in schools. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned because it teaches about life in the past and why the world is the way it is now, proving that this novel has the ability to effectively educate kids about the past and potential impact of human behaviour.
The novel is set during the Great Depression in the 1930’s. During this time, many
The second reason why To Kill a Mockingbird shouldn't be banned is because it tells a
The 1920s, often referred to as the Roaring Twenties, was a time of great change and a time of powerful enthusiasm in many areas of society. The world had just finished the biggest war in history, the First World War, and the United States was left almost unharmed by the war. The United States was able to experience a decade of peace and success following the war. During this decade, America became the wealthiest country in the world (Trueman, 2000). The people in the United States went through a colorful period during the twenties. However, at the same time the 1920s was also a very rebellious and difficult time for many. The culture of the 1920s has influenced the culture of America’s society today.
The 1920’s were a very important era in America for better or worse. There were many issues in relation to race and how people of different ethnic groups were treated. African American had a cultural rejuvenation that being the Harlem Renaissance. The advent of the Ford Model T change the way how people traveled. Many may say an era like the 1950’s were highly comparable. Race related issues were on a decline as America as whole sought to be more accepting and the oppressed started to speak out on it. While some may argue that the 1920’s and the 1950’s were similar time periods, you can say they were different due to how the way minority ethnic groups were treated and the new consumerist lifestyles of people in the 1950’s. I believe that
People have different opinions and views on subjects and we won’t always agree with them or understand why they think that way. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” I like that Atticus is teaching his kids valuable lessons. We don’t know what makes someone act or dress or do the things they do, so we make assumptions and conclusions in order to “understand”, but the only true way of understanding someone is through sympathy and compassion.
In this essay I will be describing and telling you whether or not To Kill A Mockingbird should or shouldn't be taught in the 9th grade. To Kill A Mockingbird is a very good and intellectual book to read. It is a winner of the pulitzer prize and a wonderful book it talks about this family(Atticus, Scout, and Jem) back in the day when black people didn't have many right and privileges. They live in a little town called birmingham Alabama, the kids father is a lawyer and is defending a black guy(Tom Robinson) that got accused of Rape. The reason for the father (Atticus)defending this man is because he knows that Tom Robinson didn’t rape this girl. Overall this book shows how you should act toward someone if you know they are not guilty even if they are black(Everyone Is Equal). So in my opinion this book should be taught in the 9th grade because it shows how white people acted toward blacks back in the day.
Atticus also teaches Jem a sad but all too true fact that in southern courts, a white man’s word always wins against a black man’s word (Lee 10). Atticus is

How much should be censured by school systems and why are some books accepted while others are not? This is what some people think about when deciding whether or not to ban certain book from their school systems. Furthermore, why my topic on whether or not To Kill a Mockingbird should or should not be band in school systems is important to talk about because it is a book that has an enormous amount of people that argue over it. Moreover, people who want To Kill a Mockingbird to be band believe that the book has negative impacts on children's minds however people who don’t want To Kill a Mockingbird to be band believe that the book teaches important topics that is usually hard to teach students. In addition to this, To Kill a Mockingbird should not be banned from school because it teaches children good life lessons about empathy and doing the right things.
Atticus is working with a black man when no one wanted to because of the race and for what he did to the daughter of Mr. Ewell by abuse. Some people would say that it does not make sense for Atticus to defend Tom Robinson. “In our courts, when it's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. They're ugly, but those are the facts of life.” That everything Tom said will not be taught right and not as equal as in the court then a white mans evidence. Mrs. Dubose tells Scout that her “father's no better than the trash he works for!" This is saying that people should be equal then to be picked on and called names and no one to help then just one person to stand up. Atticus is a white man helping a black man out but he thinks that everyone should be treated right. “To Maycomb, Tom's death was typical. Typical of a nigger to cut and run. Typical of a nigger's mentality to have no plan, no thought for the future, just run blind first chance he saw.” Everyone thinks that every black person will try to run even though they have nothing less and nothing to lose. People should treat each other the same even though they are not the same
